Flood hydrology and methylmercury availability in coastal plain rivers.

Mercury (Hg) burdens in top-predator fish differ substantially between adjacent South Carolina Coastal Plain river basins with similar wetlands coverage. In the Congaree River, floodwaters frequently originate in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont regions, where wetlands coverage and surface water dissolved methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations are low. Piedmont-driven flood events can lead to downward hydraulic gradients in the Coastal Plain riparian wetland margins, inhibiting MeHg transport from wetland sediments, and decreasing MeHg availability in the Congaree River habitat. In the adjacent Edisto

[Hydrological therapy of renal lithiasis].

The spa treatment most widely used in the management of renal calculosis is the drinking of a certain amount of mineral water under certain predetermined conditions of temperature, time and rhythm. These treatments are always indicated unless there are obstacles to the passage of urine or general contraindications. Chances for success are increased if the diagnosis is exact and the stone has been located. The results obtained by various authors are reported and their statistical validity is discussed. Favorable effects consist in: increased diuresis with urine dilution and correspondingly redu

Hydrology and water quality evaluation for potential HABs under future climate scenarios.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasingly a global concern and the issue of all fifty states in the U.S as it poses a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystem. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of HABs with streamflow and water quality parameters and assess the hydrology-based potential future HABs in the Ohio River Basin at Ironton (ORBI) using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). SWAT was calibrated and validated against potential HABs indicators including streamflow, total suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved oxygen (DO) with acceptable accuracies. Twenty-one ye

Glacial microbiota are hydrologically connected and temporally variable.

Glaciers are melting rapidly. The concurrent export of microbial assemblages alongside glacial meltwater is expected to impact the ecology of adjoining ecosystems. Currently, the source of exported assemblages is poorly understood, yet this information may be critical for understanding how current and future glacial melt seasons may influence downstream environments. We report on the connectivity and temporal variability of microbiota sampled from supraglacial, subglacial and periglacial habitats and water bodies within a glacial catchment. Sampled assemblages showed evidence of being biologic

Unraveling the carbon fraction heterogeneity in China's Rivers: Hydrology, nutrients, and dam regulation.

Representatively, the river carbon (C) cycle involves complex processes and interactions, leading to pronounced spatiotemporal C concentration heterogeneity that effectively complicates its accurate assessment. It is critical to resolve this issue to reconcile discrepancies in terrestrial C sink evaluations. Accordingly, we used a comprehensive dataset encompassing 1670 water quality stations across 944 rivers in China as well as multiple models based on water quality parameters to resolve the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of different C species at a national scale. The C fraction in these repr

Achieving operational hydrologic monitoring of mosquitoborne disease.

Mosquitoes and mosquitoborne disease transmission are sensitive to hydrologic variability. If local hydrologic conditions can be monitored or modeled at the scales at which these conditions affect the population dynamics of vector mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, a means for monitoring or modeling mosquito populations and mosquitoborne disease transmission may be realized. We review how hydrologic conditions have been associated with mosquito abundances and mosquitoborne disease transmission and discuss the advantages of different measures of hydrologic variability. We propose that t

Success of lake restoration depends on spatial aspects of nutrient loading and hydrology.

Many aquatic ecosystems have deteriorated due to human activities and their restoration is often troublesome. It is proposed here that the restoration success of deteriorated lakes critically depends on hitherto largely neglected spatial heterogeneity in nutrient loading and hydrology. A modelling approach is used to study this hypothesis by considering four lake types with contrasting nutrient loading (point versus diffuse) and hydrology (seepage versus drainage). By comparing the longterm effect of common restoration measures (nutrient load reduction, lake flushing or biomanipulation) in the

Modeling liver fluke transmission in northeast Thailand: Impacts of development, hydrology, and control.

Human infection with the Southeast Asian liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini and liver fluke-associated cholangiocarcinoma cause significant disease burden in Southeast Asia. While there has been considerable work to understand liver fluke pathology and to reduce infection prevalence, there remains a limited understanding of the environmental determinants of parasite transmission dynamics to inform treatment and control programs. A particular setting where targeted control efforts have taken place is the Lawa Lake complex in northeast Thailand. Here, we describe the recent history of host infec

Hydrological controls on methylmercury distribution and flux in a tidal marsh.

The San Francisco Estuary, California, contains mercury (Hg) contamination originating from historical regional gold and Hg mining operations. We measured hydrological and geochemical variables in a tidal marsh of the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve to determine the sources, location, and magnitude of hydrological fluxes of methylmercury (MeHg), a bioavailable Hg species of ecological and health concern. Based on measured concentrations and detailed finite-element simulation of coupled surface water and saturated-unsaturated groundwater flow, we found pore water MeHg was concentrated in uns

Pharmaceutical concentration variability at sewage treatment plant outlets dominated by hydrology and other factors.

A study was conducted in which the effluent at four small to medium sized sewage treatment plants (STP) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany was monitored for three pharmaceutical compounds (carbamazepine, diclofenac, metoprolol) over a period of four years. Grab sampling and auto sampling campaigns were accomplished with respect to various weather conditions in the catchment area. Flow volumes and hydraulic retention times (HRT) from various sampling dates which provide information on processes causing emission changes were additionally taken into account. Monitoring results showed that concent

Wetlands and warfare - implications for hydrologic and biogeochemical ecosystem functions.

Wetlands deliver unique hydrologic and biogeochemical functions, including floodwater detention, wave energy attenuation, and the retention and transformation of elements and compounds. The concept of warfare ecology provides a framework to evaluate ecosystem functions throughout wars three cyclical phases (i.e., preparation, active conflict, and rebuilding). Little research focuses on warfare's implications for wetland functions, and most available literature targets wildlife habitat effects. In response, this synthesis examines wetland hydrologic and biogeochemical functional responses to wa

Influence of hydrology on heavy metal speciation and mobility in a Pb-Zn mine tailing.

Among the inorganic toxicants of greatest concern in mine tailings, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd and As figure prominently due to their abundance and potential toxicity. Here we report on their biolability and solid-phase speciation in two sediment cores subject to variable hydrological regimes at an abandoned pyritic mine tailing. The oxic conditions of well-drained sediments induced pyrite oxidation and the subsequent liberation of H+, SO4(2-) and considerable quantities of Fe(III), which precipitated as goethite. Solubility of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd was closely coupled to pH and goethite presence. Metal labil

Domain-specific embedding models for hydrology and environmental sciences: enhancing semantic retrieval and question answering.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown strong performance across natural language processing tasks, yet their general-purpose embeddings often fall short in domains with specialized terminology and complex syntax, such as hydrology and environmental science. This study introduces HydroEmbed, a suite of open-source sentence embedding models fine-tuned for four QA formats: multiple-choice (MCQ), true/false (TF), fill-in-the-blank (FITB), and open-ended questions. Models were trained on the HydroLLM Benchmark, a domain-aligned dataset combining textbook and scientific article content. Fine-tunin

A proposal for a worldwide definition of health resort medicine, balneology, medical hydrology and climatology.

Health Resort Medicine, Balneology, Medical Hydrology and Climatology are not fully recognised as independent medical specialties at a global international level. Analysing the reasons, we can identify both external (from outside the field) and internal (from inside the field) factors. External arguments include, e.g. the lack of scientific evidence, the fact that Balneotherapy and Climatotherapy is not used in all countries, and the fact that Health Resort Medicine, Balneology, Medical Hydrology and Climatology focus only on single methods and do not have a comprehensive concept. Implicit bar

Study on the structure and hydrological cycle of the Pingjiang underground river system.

This study clarifies the hydrological cycle structure of the Pingjiang underground river system using hydrogeological mapping (1:50,000), tracer tests, automated groundwater monitoring, and RTK surveys. The obtained results indicate the following: (1) The Pingjiang underground river basin covers an area of 110.66 km² and consists of five tributary conduits, forming a dendritic-network composite structure dominated by unilateral recharge; (2) The threshold rainfall required to generate surface runoff is around 20 mm, which may exceed even 50 mm under prolonged drought conditions. When the daily

The Effects of Hydrological Disasters on the Population's Health in the Northeast Region of Brazil.

The Northeast region of Brazil is characterized by long periods of drought. However, the region is also frequently affected by floods. The socioeconomic characteristics of the locality make the population more vulnerable to the impacts of these disasters. Therefore, the aim of this article is to investigate the short to long-term impacts of hydrological disasters in northeastern Brazil on morbidity and mortality rates, by age groups. For this purpose, the difference-in-differences method proposed by Callaway and Sant'Anna was applied to a monthly panel data spanning the period from 2000 to 201

[Hydrological dangerous natural phenomena as cause of aggravation of an epidemiological situation].

Materials dealing with the specific features of the territory of Southern Russia, appearing as a consequence of natural, technogenic and some other factors, are presented. These materials indicate that, due to the high flood in summer of 2002, a real danger of a sharp aggravation of the epidemiological situation in acute enteric infections, as well as other infections, arose on a vast territory. As the result of the timely evaluation and analysis of changes in the factors of the natural and social environment, occurring as the consequence of the high flood, prophylactic measures were urgently
