Potent surface antimicrobial activity of hydrolyzable tannins from Aleppo oak galls.

Surface antimicrobial agents provide a first line of defense against pathogens, especially for immunocompromised individuals. Insect-induced plant galls, tumor-like structures formed on plant surfaces by insect larvae, have long been used as sources of antimicrobial compounds. Building on existing knowledge, this study evaluated the surface antimicrobial activity of a standardized, ethanolic extract of Aleppo oak galls (AGE) on agar, abiotic, and biotic surfaces. Using a novel surface antimicrobial assay, we demonstrated that the anti-Escherichia coli, -Staphylococcus aureus, -Candida albicans

Therapeutic potential and limitation of condensed and hydrolyzed tannins in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the accumulation of misfolded proteins such as α-synuclein. This review explores the therapeutic potential of tannins, particularly proanthocyanidins and hydrolyzable tannins from grape seeds, in alleviating Parkinson's disease pathology. Condensed tannins exhibit significant antioxidant properties, can cross the blood-brain barrier, reduce oxidative stress, upregulate antioxidant proteins, and prevent neuronal apoptosis. Hydrolyzable tannins, through their unique chem

Walnut polyphenols prevent liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride and d-galactosamine: hepatoprotective hydrolyzable tannins in the kernel pellicles of walnut.

The polyphenol-rich fraction (WP, 45% polyphenol) prepared from the kernel pellicles of walnuts was assessed for its hepatoprotective effect in mice. A single oral administration of WP (200 mg/kg) significantly suppressed serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) elevation in liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4), while it did not suppress d-galactosamine (GalN)-induced liver injury. In order to identify the active principles in WP, we examined individual constituents for the protective effect on cell damage induced by CCl 4 and d-GalN

Influence of acetonylgeraniin, a hydrolyzable tannin from Euphoria longana, on orthostatic hypotension in a rat model.

Acetonylgeraniin, an active principle isolated from the seeds of Euphoria longana Lam. (Sapindaceae), reversed the fall in arterial blood pressure in conscious hypertensive rats (SHRs) with orthostatic hypotension induced by injection of hexamethonium into animals subjected to 90 degrees head-up tilts for 60 seconds. However, acetonylgeraniin failed to affect prazosin-induced orthostatic hypotension. Plasma noradrenaline (NA) and mean blood pressure were elevated dose-dependently by an intravenous injection of acetonyl-geraniin into the rats; this increase in blood pressure was totally abolish

Extreme Hydrolyzable Tannin Accumulation in Aphid-Induced Galls and Laccase-Mediated Tolerance in Schlechtendalia chinensis.

Plants redirect their secondary metabolism when herbivores feed on them, and the galls that the aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis induces on Rhus chinensis carry this response to an extreme, with hydrolyzable tannins (HTs) reaching 74.5% of gall wall dry weight, about 32 times the level in ungalled leaves. To find out how the plant builds this much tannin and how the aphid survives it, we followed HT accumulation and candidate gene expression through gall development, expressed the genes in Arabidopsis thaliana and characterised the aphid enzymes acting on tannin. Expression of phosphoglucomutas

Mannoprotein and hydrolyzable tannin enhance aroma retention in a non-alcoholic synthetic wine matrix during storage.

BACKGROUND: Reverse osmosis (RO) is a promising non-thermal dealcoholization technology, yet substantial volatile losses during processing and storage limit its potential for producing premium non-alcoholic wines. This study developed an aroma stabilization strategy integrating RO with targeted supplementation of yeast-derived mannoprotein (MP; 1-1.5 g L-1) or tannic acid (TA; 1-2 g L-1) in a synthetic wine matrix. Wines were fermented to 12.8% v/v ethanol, treated with MP or TA, dealcoholized to 0.4% v/v ethanol by RO, and stored at 4 °C for up to 6 months. Volatile profiles were quantified u

Chebulagic acid, a hydrolyzable tannin, exhibited antiviral activity in vitro and in vivo against human enterovirus 71.

Human enterovirus 71 is one of the major causative agents of hand, foot and mouth disease in children under six years of age. Presently, no vaccines or antiviral drugs have been clinically available to employ against EV71. In this study, we demonstrate that treatment with chebulagic acid reduced the viral cytopathic effect on rhabdomyosarcoma cells with an IC50 of 12.5 μg/mL. The utilization of the chebulagic acid treatment on mice challenged with a lethal dose of enterovirus 71 was able to efficiently reduce mortality and relieve clinical symptoms through the inhibition of viral replication.

Stimulation of monocyte iodination and IL-1 production by tannins and related compounds.

Various tannins and related compounds were compared for their ability to stimulate the iodination (incorporation of radioactive iodine into an acid-insoluble fraction) of human peripheral blood monocytes. The stimulating activity of most of the monomeric and dimeric hydrolyzable tannins was generally higher than that of the trimeric and tetrameric compounds. Compounds that had dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl or chebuloyl groups had considerably less activity than those that had other functional groups (hexahydroxydiphenoyl, valoneoyl, dehydrodigalloyl, isodehydrodigalloyl, lactonized valoneoyl, he

Tannin structural elucidation and quantitative ³¹P NMR analysis. 1. Model compounds.

Tannins and flavonoids are secondary metabolites of plants that display a wide array of biological activities. This peculiarity is related to the inhibition of extracellular enzymes that occurs through the complexation of peptides by tannins. Not only the nature of these interactions, but more fundamentally also the structure of these heterogeneous polyphenolic molecules are not completely clear. This first paper describes the development of a new analytical method for the structural characterization of tannins on the basis of tannin model compounds employing an in situ labeling of all labile

Stimulation of granulocytic cell iodination by tannins and related compounds.

Tannic acid stimulated the iodination (incorporation of radioactive iodine into an acid-insoluble fraction) of human peripheral blood polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and human promyelocytic leukemic HL-60 cells, without affecting the iodination of 9 other cultured cell lines. The stimulation of both PMN and HL-60 cells depended on incubation time and temperature, and was significantly suppressed by myeloperoxidase inhibitors. Among chemically defined natural polyphenols, condensed tannins (epicatechin gallate oligomers) and monomeric and oligomeric hydrolyzable tannins potently stimulated PMN io

Tannins-Based Extracts: Effects on Gut Chicken Spontaneous Contractility.

The impossibility of using drugs for the health of farm animals leads to the search for alternative strategies with two purposes: to maintain animal health and safeguard human health. In this perspective, tannins have shown great promises. These phytocomplexes obtained from natural matrices with multiple health properties may be used as a feed supplement in chicken farms. In this work, we studied two tannin-based extracts (from Castanea sativa Mill. wood and from Schinopsis balansae Engl. Quebracho Colorado hardwood) with different chemical compositions on the spontaneous contractility on the

Interference by tannic acid with the effectiveness of activated charcoal in "universal antidote".

Evidence is presented to show that tannic acid is responsible for the reduced effectiveness of "universal antidote" as compared with activated charcoal alone. Adsorption isotherm data indicate that tannic acid binds strongly to charcoal and hence uses up part of the adsorption capacity that would otherwise be available for binding of a drug or poison. Data on sodium salicylate adsorption from simulated gastric fluid, both with and without the presence of tannic acid, are presented that illustrate clearly that tannic acid interferes significantly with the adsorption of salicylate. Magnesium oxi

The Oxidative Activity of Ellagitannins Dictates Their Tendency To Form Highly Stabilized Complexes with Bovine Serum Albumin at Increased pH.

Many food and forage plants contain tannins, high molecular weight polyphenols that characteristically interact strongly with protein, forming complexes that affect taste, nutritional quality, and the health of the consumer. In the present study, the interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and each of seven hydrolyzable tannins or epigallocatechin gallate was examined. The objective was to define the effect of tannin oxidation, measured as oxidative activity (browning) or as oxidizability (degradation monitored by HPLC), on the formation on highly stabilized tannin-protein complexes and

The antimicrobial capacity of Cistus salviifolius and Punica granatum plant extracts against clinical pathogens is related to their polyphenolic composition.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to human health worldwide. Plant compounds may help to overcome antibiotic resistance due to their potential resistance modifying capacity. Several botanical extracts and pure polyphenolic compounds were screened against a panel of eleven bacterial isolates with clinical relevance. The two best performing agents, Cistus salviifolius (CS) and Punica granatum (GP) extracts, were tested against 100 Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates, which resulted in average MIC50 values ranging between 50-80 µg/mL. CS extract, containing hydrolyzable tannins

The Impact of Tannin Consumption on Iron Bioavailability and Status: A Narrative Review.

Iron deficiency remains a global health issue, and antinutritional factors, such as tannins, are often cited as contributors to the high prevalence of deficiency. Despite this, tannin-rich diets may have potential beneficial cardiovascular and cancer-fighting properties because of the antioxidant activity of tannins. Furthermore, epidemiologic studies and long-term trials involving participants who consumed diets rich in antinutritional factors, particularly tannins, conflict with single-meal bioavailability studies. The purpose of this narrative review is to determine the effect of tannins on

Gastric ulcer healing by chebulinic acid solid dispersion-loaded gastroretentive raft systems: preclinical evidence.

Background: Chebulinic acid (CA), a component in Terminalia chebula, exhibits antiulcer activity, but has poor aqueous solubility. Raft-forming systems incorporating solid dispersions (SDs) of CA, were developed to overcome its poor biopharmaceutical properties and to prolong the gastric residence time for maximum activity. Methods: SDs were formulated by a solvent evaporation method using Eudragit EPO. Raft formulations consisted of sodium alginate as a polymer. Results: Release of CA in the dissolution medium was 40%, whereas SDs showed 95.45% release. The CA raft system (20 mg/kg) showed cu
