Sea snake venoms contain less protein than those of land snakes (Toom et al., 1969). Sea snake venoms lack arginine ester hydrolyzing activity, whereas those of Crotalidae and Viperidae have such activity (Tu et al., 1966). Sea snakes live in salty water, and their venoms may be different from those of land snakes. Because of the difficulty in obtaining sea snake venoms, information about sea snake venoms is quite incomplete. NGF is commonly present in the venoms of land snakes such as Elapidae, Viperidae, and Crotalidae (Cohen and Levi-Montalcini, 1956; Lipps, 2002). It is therefore of intere

Sea snakes (family: Hydrophiidae) are serpents found in the coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are two subfamilies in Hydrophiidae: Hydrophiinae and Laticaudinae. A toxin, aagardi toxin, was isolated from the venom of the Hydrophiinae snake, Hydrophis torquatus aagardi and its chemical properties such as molecular weight, isoelectric point, importance of disulfide bonds, lack of enzymatic activity and amino acid sequence were determined. The amino acid sequence indicated a close relationship to the primary structure of other Hydrophiinae toxins and a significant difference f

An assay of platelet aggregation inhibitors measured by the turbidimeter using Aggregometer PAM 8C (Mebanix) was performed after each crude snake venom (57 species) was subjected to ultrafiltration using MILLIPORE UFP 1 LGC. The snake venoms of Viperidae (three species), Elapidae (11 species), and Hydrophiidae (two species) inhibited ADP-induced rabbit platelet aggregation. In particular, six venoms of Bitis gabonica, Pseudocerastes persicus, Dendroaspis angusticeps, D. polylepis, Ophiophagus hannah, and N. nigricollis crawshawii strongly inhibited platelet aggregation. Furthermore, adenosine

Sea snakes, a group of highly specialized reptiles adapted to marine environment, have evolved a remarkable arsenal of venomous adaptations that remain largely unexplored. This review systematically compiles and analyses data from a multitude of studies, further highlighting the scopes to study the molecular mechanism of how the complex cocktail of toxins of sea snakes have developed for prey capture and defence. It discusses the habitat, behaviour and distribution of multiple sea snake genera and future aspects of their potential pharmacological significance and medical relevance. In addition

We characterized and compared the venom protein profiles of Hydrophis curtus (synonyms: Lapemis hardwickii, Lapemis curtus and Hydrophis hardwickii) and Hydrophis cyanocinctus, the two representatives of medically important venomous sea snakes in Chinese waters using proteomic approaches. A total of 47 and 38 putative toxins were identified in H. curtus venom (HcuV) and H. cyanocinctus venom (HcyV), respectively, and these toxins could be grouped into 15 functional categories, mainly proteinases, phospholipases, three-finger toxins (3FTxs), lectins, protease inhibitors, ion channel inhibitors,

Sea snake venom systems provide exceptional models for studying marine adaptation and are rich sources of bioactive molecules for drug discovery. To comprehensively characterize the venom diversity of the medicinal sea snake Hydrophis cyanocinctus, this study employed an integrated multi-omics strategy. We performed deep proteomic profiling of its venom and venom gland using both data-independent acquisition (DIA) and tandem mass tag (TMT) techniques, underpinned by a previously established chromosome-level genome and PacBio full-length transcriptomics. Our analysis revealed a distinctive prot

Okinawa prefecture is a popular tourist destination due to its beaches and reefs. The reefs host a large variety of animals, including a number of venomous species. Because of the popularity of the reefs and marine activities, people are frequently in close contact with dangerous venomous species and, thus, are exposed to potential envenomation. Commonly encountered venomous animals throughout Okinawa include the invertebrate cone snail, sea urchin, crown-of-thorns starfish, blue-ringed octopus, box jellyfish, and fire coral. The vertebrates include the stonefish, lionfish, sea snake, and mora

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive evaluation of the -omic profiles of venom is important for understanding the potential function and evolution of snake venom. Here, we conducted an integrated multi-omics-analysis to unveil the venom-transcriptomic and venomic profiles in a same group of spine-bellied sea snakes (Hydrophis curtus) from the South China Sea, where the snake is a widespread species and might generate regionally-specific venom potentially harmful to human activities. The capacity of two heterologous antivenoms to immunocapture the H. curtus venom was determined for an in-depth evaluatio

Although classically associated with urban environments in invertebrates, melanism in terrestrial snakes is more often linked to occupancy of cool climates [1-3]. Thermal advantages to melanism do not apply in aquatic snakes [4], but although turtle-headed seasnakes (Emydocephalus annulatus) are banded or blotched across a wide geographic range [5], most individuals are melanic in polluted inshore bays of the Pacific island of New Caledonia [4]. Why has melanism evolved in these urban sites? Because trace elements bind to melanin, darker feathers enhance a bird's ability to shed pollutants [6]

Sea snake venom is extremely toxic, and it can induce severe respiratory failure and cause high mortality. The most effective first aid treatment for sea snake bites is to inject antivenom as soon as possible. However, in China, there are only four types of terrestrial snake antivenoms, none of which are effective in the treatment of sea snake bites. In order to develop an antivenom for the dominant species of sea snakes in Chinese seas, Hydrophis curtus venom (HcuV) was chosen as the antigen to immunize horses. From immune plasma, a high-titer Hydrophis curtus antivenom (HcuAV) was prepared.

Morphological variation among the viviparous sea snakes (Hydrophiinae), a clade of fully aquatic elapid snakes, includes an extreme "microcephalic" ecomorph that has a very small head atop a narrow forebody, while the hind body is much thicker (up to three times the forebody girth). Previous research has demonstrated that this morphology has evolved at least nine times as a consequence of dietary specialization on burrowing eels, and has also examined morphological changes to the vertebral column underlying this body shape. The question addressed in this study is what happens to the skull duri

A 23-year-old man working on a prawn trawler off the Northern Australian coast was bitten on the right hand by a black-banded sea snake (Laticauda colubrina), resulting in the rapid onset of ptosis, blurred vision, and respiratory difficulties with convulsions, loss of consciousness, and death. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. No antivenom was available because of the remote location. At autopsy, a small puncture wound was identified on the middle interphalangeal joint of the right little finger. No other significant abnormalities were detected. Elevations in creatine kinase (1558 μ/L) and myog

The effects of snake venom on the cholinergic system have been well-studied; however, no similar studies have been performed on the adrenergic system. Adrenomedullary cells secrete catecholamine (CA) on stimulation; thus they are an ideal system to study the effect of snake venoms on CA secretion or inhibition. Snake venoms from different Families and Genera were investigated. All snake venoms investigated, caused CA efflux. CA can be released when cytolysis takes place; so in order to assert CA efflux was not due to cytolysis, venoms were added after the cells were treated with KCl. Most veno

Numerous investigators have studied and reported the antigenic reactivity of venoms from the species of snakes belonging to a genus or a family. However, there is very little published data on the inter-family antigenic cross reactivity among the venoms of snakes and absolutely no data on venoms from other sources such as honey bee, scorpion and toad. This report describes the antigenic and immunological cross reactivity among the venoms of snakes from major families: Crotalidae, Elapidae, Viperidae, Hydrophiidae and venoms from honey bee, scorpion and toad. The homologous polyclonal antisera

Venomous reptiles are distributed in select habitats in temperate and tropical areas of the world with few geographical exceptions, and have adapted to not only terrestial existence, but to arboreal and aquatic environments as well. Venomous snakes are found in the families Colubridae (fixed and rear fanged snakes), Elapidae (fixed and front fang snakes), Hydrophiidae (sea snakes), Viperidae (Old World vipers) and Crotalidae (pit vipers). Venomous lizards are found in the United States and Mexico, and comprise the family Helodermatidae. Venom delivery systems and venom components show diversit

This study focuses on comprehensive characterization of the venom proteome of the beaked sea snake (Hydrophis schistosus) from Songkhla Lake, Thailand. H. schistosus can be considered as the deadliest sea snake commonly found in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Their envenomation causes muscular paralysis and rhabdomyolysis. To develop effective treatment for this snakebite, it is necessary to understand the detailed venom composition. In this study, multiple mass spectrometry-based approaches were employed. Bottom-up proteomics revealed that tryptic digestion in-solution provided a higher numbe

Hydrophis cyanocinctus, annulated sea snake, is a widely distributed marine elapid whose venom composition and gene-expression architecture remain poorly characterized across its geographic range. Here, we present the first high-resolution proteo-transcriptomic profile of venom and venom gland of this species from India. This research underscores RNA-seq comparison of Indian and Chinese H. cyanocinctus venom gland gene expression to elucidate population-level variation in venom gland machinery, gene diversity, and other regulatory biology. A new genus and species of trematode, Paratestophis gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov., is described from the large intestine of the rainbow water snake, Enhydris enhydris, collected from several provinces in southern Thailand. Morphological analyses reveal distinct characteristics that differentiate P. gelicolus gen. nov., sp. nov. from related echinochasmid taxa, specifically its elongated bottle-shaped body, presence of 22 collar spines, parallel testes and parasitism of snakes-features not observed in other echinochasmid genera. Multi-marker phylogenetic analyses (28S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2 and C

Infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens are a worldwide challenge for public health. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are regarded as promising antibiotic alternatives for the treatment of drug-resistant infections. In the present study, a series of small peptides were designed based on our previously reported sea snake AMP Hc-CATH. From them, the lead peptide HC1-D2, a truncated peptide entirely substituted by d-amino acids, was selected. HC1-D2 exhibited significantly improved stability and antibiofilm and anti-inflammatory activities. Meanwhile, HC1-D2 retained potent, broad-spectrum, an

INTRODUCTION: Recent analyses of data show a warming trend in global average air and sea surface ocean temperatures. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, the sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased. This article will focus on climate change and projected effects on venomous marine and amphibious creatures with the potential impact on human health.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of environmental, ecological, and medical literature with a focus on climate change, toxinology, and future modeling specific to ven
