Cumaceans (Crustacea, Peracarida) associated with shallow-water hydrothermal vents at Banderas Bay, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Cumaceans mostly inhabit marine environments, where they play a crucial role in marine food webs and actively participate in the transfer between benthic and pelagic systems. Scientific interest in these crustaceans has been increasing, but is limited to certain geographic areas, which do not include extreme environments such as hydrothermal vents. NEW INFORMATION: Therefore, this study aimed to report the distribution of cumaceans in shallow-water hydrothermal vents at Banderas Bay and to identify the specimens present. Three sites were selected (20°44'54.7"N, 105°28'40.6"W; 20°4

Widespread introgression in deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels.

BACKGROUND: The analysis of hybrid zones is crucial for gaining a mechanistic understanding of the process of speciation and the maintenance of species boundaries. Hybrid zones have been studied intensively in terrestrial and shallow-water ecosystems, but very little is known about their occurrence in deep-sea environments. Here we used diagnostic, single nucleotide polymorphisms in combination with one mitochondrial gene to re-examine prior hypotheses about a contact zone involving deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels, Bathymodiolus azoricus and B. puteoserpentis, living along the Mid-Atlantic

Cellular mechanisms underlying extraordinary sulfide tolerance in a crustacean holobiont from hydrothermal vents.

The shallow-water hydrothermal vent system of Kueishan Island has been described as one of the world's most acidic and sulfide-rich marine habitats. The only recorded metazoan species living in the direct vicinity of the vents is Xenograpsus testudinatus, a brachyuran crab endemic to marine sulfide-rich vent systems. Despite the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide, X. testudinatus occupies an ecological niche in a sulfide-rich habitat, with the underlying detoxification mechanism remaining unknown. Using laboratory and field-based experiments, we characterized the gills of X. testudinatus that are th

Origin of Life's Building Blocks in Carbon- and Nitrogen-Rich Surface Hydrothermal Vents.

There are two dominant and contrasting classes of origin of life scenarios: those predicting that life emerged in submarine hydrothermal systems, where chemical disequilibrium can provide an energy source for nascent life; and those predicting that life emerged within subaerial environments, where UV catalysis of reactions may occur to form the building blocks of life. Here, we describe a prebiotically plausible environment that draws on the strengths of both scenarios: surface hydrothermal vents. We show how key feedstock molecules for prebiotic chemistry can be produced in abundance in shall

Physiological dynamics of chemosynthetic symbionts in hydrothermal vent snails.

Symbioses between invertebrate animals and chemosynthetic bacteria form the basis of hydrothermal vent ecosystems worldwide. In the Lau Basin, deep-sea vent snails of the genus Alviniconcha associate with either Gammaproteobacteria (A. kojimai, A. strummeri) or Campylobacteria (A. boucheti) that use sulfide and/or hydrogen as energy sources. While the A. boucheti host-symbiont combination (holobiont) dominates at vents with higher concentrations of sulfide and hydrogen, the A. kojimai and A. strummeri holobionts are more abundant at sites with lower concentrations of these reductants. We posit

Exceptional properties of hyper-resistant armor of a hydrothermal vent crab.

Animals living in extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents, would be expected to have evolved protective shells or exoskeletons to maintain homeostasis. The outer part of the exoskeleton of vent crabs (Austinograea sp.) in the Indian Ocean hydrothermal vent was one of the hardest (approximately 7 GPa) biological materials ever reported. To explore the exoskeletal characteristics of vent crabs which enable them to adapt to severe environments, a comparative analysis was conducted with the Asian paddle crab (Charybdis japonica) living in coastal areas. Nanoindentation, thermogravimetric

Hydrocarbons in hydrothermal vent fluids: the role of chromium-bearing catalysts.

Fischer-Tropsch type (FTT) synthesis has long been proposed to account for the existence of hydrocarbons in hydrothermal fluids. We show that iron- and chromium-bearing minerals catalyze the abiotic formation of hydrocarbons. In addition to production of methane (CH4aq), we report abiotic generation of ethane (C2H6aq) and propane (C3H8aq) by mineral-catalyzed hydrothermal reactions at 390 degrees C and 400 bars. Results suggest that the chromium component in ultramafic rocks could be an important factor for FTT synthesis during water-rock interaction in mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal systems. Th

Sulfide binding in the body fluids of hydrothermal vent alvinellid polychaetes.

Dissolved H2S is a major environmental factor in hydrothermal vent ecosystems. In a study of adaptations to sulfide by alvinellid polychaetes, the sulfide-binding capacity of body fluids was examined in Paralvinella palmiformis from northeast Pacific ridges and Alvinella species from the East Pacific Rise. Sulfide concentrations in vascular blood and coelomic fluid of freshly collected animals were notably variable. Separation of P. palmiformis body-fluid components revealed that most sulfide (ca. 77%) was accumulated in the dissolved fraction. In P. palmiformis, both vascular blood and coelom

Deep Sea hydrothermal vent habitats support gravid Antarctic krill.

The long-term resilience of the Southern Ocean ecosystem relies on healthy populations of Antarctic krill, but climate change and increasing fishing pressure are placing this species at risk. Protecting Antarctic krill requires identification of key habitats for critical life history stages. Here, we present multiple lines of evidence that reproductively active female Antarctic krill utilize deep-sea hydrothermal vent habitats. Gravid females collected at Hook Ridge (Bransfield Strait) bore paired spermatophores and exhibited stable isotope signatures, microbial gut communities, and trace-meta

Amphipods associate with epibiotic filamentous bacteria at a shallow-water hydrothermal vent.

In the deep ocean, hydrothermal vents sustain remarkable animal-microbial symbioses, in which bacteria colonizing animal external or internal tissues use reduced chemicals from venting fluids to perform chemosynthesis and nourish their host. Hydrothermal vents also occasionally occur within the photic zone, but the prevalence of photosynthesis within these settings is considered to override the development of chemosymbiotic interactions; animal-microbial associations such as those observed at deep-sea vents have rarely been recorded at shallow vents. During 2019 sampling of the Strýtan hydroth

Reproductive adaptations of the hydrothermal vent crab Xenograpus testudinatus: An isotopic approach.

The vent crab Xenograpsus testudinatus was firstly discovered in 2000 at the hydrothermal vent field off the coast of Kueishan Island. The present study attempts to understand the adaptive reproduction of this crab living in an extreme environment by examining its spatial and temporal distribution and isotopic signatures. The seasonal variation of the female-male ratio suggests that ovigerous females may migrate from beneath the vent orifice to the vent-periphery region to release their larvae to avoid the larvae contacting high toxic plumes, and then returns to the vent orifice habitat. We us

Hydrodynamic flow and benthic boundary layer interactions shape the microbial community in Milos shallow water hydrothermal vents.

In shallow-water hydrothermal vents, the dynamic interface between the discharged reduced hydrothermal fluids and the oxidized seawater allows the establishment of gradients capable of supporting diverse and complex microbial mats. Due to their shallow depths and proximity to land masses, shallow vents are heavily influenced by dynamic forcing, tidal fluctuations, and episodic events (e.g., storms, tides, etc.). Although several studies have investigated the microbial communities inhabiting shallow vents in the last decades, less is known about how microbial communities respond to episodic eve

The First Bopyrid Isopod from Hydrothermal Vents: Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. (Isopoda: Epicaridea) Parasitizing Shinkaia crosnieri (Decapoda: Anomura).

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are 'extreme' environments harboring diverse animal communities, powered by chemosynthesis. Though vent-endemic macrofauna have been a center of interest since their discovery in 1977, macroparasites have received little attention. Here, we report a bopyrid epicaridean isopod infesting the symbiotic munidopsid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri Baba and Williams, 1998 from three vent fields of Okinawa Trough, and describe it as Pleurocryptella shinkai sp. nov. Although morphologically close to the congeners Pleurocryptella formosa Bonnier, 1900, Pleurocryptella wolffi

Probiotic potential and immunomodulatory effects of a thermophilic Bacillus sp. isolated from a hydrothermal vent.

Antibiotic resistance has intensified the need for alternatives, and probiotics offer a natural strategy by enhancing host immunity. The present study investigated the probiotic potential of Bacillus sp. 475B, a strain isolated from a high-temperature hydrothermal vent. In vitro assessments included its safety profile (cytotoxicity, hemolytic activity, and antibiotic susceptibility), tolerance to gastrointestinal and physicochemical stressors, antimicrobial activity, and gut adherence capacity. Additionally, the immunomodulatory effects of Bacillus sp. 475B were evaluated in mice supplemented

Carbon Reduction Powered by Natural Electrochemical Gradients under Submarine Hydrothermal Vent Conditions.

Energy metabolism at the emergence of life has been the topic of intense theoretical and experimental study. Alkaline hydrothermal vents (AHVs) may have facilitated energy transfer and carbon fixation at life's emergence. Specifically, pH separation across vent walls could have been the forerunner to pH separation across cell membranes, with inorganic barriers containing [Ni-]FeS minerals as precursors of metalloenzymes in potentially ancient biological reductive acetyl-CoA Wood-Ljungdahl (WL) and other metabolic pathways. We previously demonstrated pH-gradient-dependent reduction of CO2 to fo

Characterization and quantitation of a tertiary mixture of salts by Raman spectroscopy in simulated hydrothermal vent fluid.

This article will demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy can be a useful tool for monitoring the chemical composition of hydrothermal vent fluids in the deep ocean. Hydrothermal vent systems are difficult to study because they are commonly found at depths greater than 1000 m under high pressure (200-300 bar) and venting fluid temperatures are up to 400 degrees C. Our goal in this study was to investigate the use of Raman spectroscopy to characterize and quantitate three Raman-active salts that are among the many chemical building blocks of deep ocean vent chemistry. This paper presents initial sa

Comparative Neuroanatomy of Hydrothermal Vent Shrimps: Ecological Differentiation Among Four Alvinocaridid Species.

Alvinocaridid shrimps colonize hydrothermal vent fields along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), where they experience extreme environmental conditions including high hydrostatic pressure, steep thermal and chemical gradients, and dim light. While various aspects of the biology of the dominant vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata, such as general anatomy, microhabitat, symbiotic relationships, or trophic networks, have been extensively studied, little is known about how brain organization varies among alvinocaridid species occupying different ecological niches. Here, we investigated whether vent shrimps

Adaptations of Xenograpsus testudinatus to shallow hydrothermal vent environments in the western Pacific: A comprehensive review.

The grapsoid crab Xenograpsus testudinatus, Ng et al. (2000) inhabits unique ecosystems of active shallow-water hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific volcanic rises as the dominant vent metazoan. This species provides a valuable model to explore population expansion, evolutionary ecology, metabolic regulation, genetic adaptation, and meta-population dynamics. A comprehensive literature review revealed that X. testudinatus, a dominant vent metazoan, has evolved robust metabolic strategies driven by mechanisms of acid-base regulation, allowing it to preserve its eco-physiological balance und

Anthropogenic pressures at the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field: 30 years of research activities.

The deep sea, the Earth's largest environment, faces increasing threats from human activities. Among the multiple ecosystems, hydrothermal vents harbor unique chemosynthetic communities that are characterized by elevated faunal biomass, high endemicity and low diversity compared to the surrounding environments. These ecosystems are particularly vulnerable but only a few vent sites are included in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), although they are increasingly targeted by mining industries for their mineral resources. The Lucky Strike (LS) vent field, discovered in 1992, is located within a Portu

Zinc source differentiation in hydrothermal vent mollusks: Insight from Zn isotope ratios.

Hydrothermal vent represents an extreme environment where metal-enriched fluids are in contact with chemosymbiotic animals. In the present study, Zn isotopic compositions were determined in multiple tissues of three dominant hydrothermal vent mollusks (the mussel Bathymodiolus marisindicus and two gastropods Chrysomallon squamiferum and Gigantopelta aegis) collected from a hydrothermal vent field (Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean). We found approximately 1.78‰ differences in the δ66Zn values among the three vent mollusks despite of their similar range of Zn concentrations. The signif
