A history of the sub-order Cystonectae (Hydrozoa: Siphonophorae).

The siphonophore sub-order Cystonectae presently comprises just five species in three genera and two families, and includes Physalia physalis, the Portuguese Man O'War. Despite the smallness of the group its history has been very chequered, particularly for P. physalis, which has been described under more than fifty different names. Haeckel (1888) was one of the worst offenders regarding the description of questionable species, but even Totton (1965) was uncertain as to the validity of some previously described cystonect species. Herein, an attempt has been made to review the history of the su

A sea of soap: toxicity of anionic surfactant to Clytia hemisphaerica (Hydrozoa).

The increasing threat of anthropogenic pollution to marine ecosystems underscores the need for robust risk assessment through ecotoxicology. While standard bioassays rely on model organisms chosen for their sensitivity and ease of laboratory use, there is growing interest in ecologically relevant species such as jellyfish, to reflect marine environmental complexity. Among jellyfish, hydrozoans represent valuable models in neuroscience and developmental and evolutionary biology; however, they are still unrepresented in ecotoxicology. Here, we propose the hydrozoan Clytia hemisphaerica as a nove

Envenomation by a benthic Hydrozoa (Cnidaria): the case of Nemalecium lighti (Haleciidae).

A case of envenomation caused by the Nemalecium lighti is described. The hydrozoan species lives in many kinds of substrates, being quite common in tropical shallow water. The patient, a marine biologist, had contact with the animal in two different opportunities while snorkeling. Both contacts produced erythematous and highly pruriginous papules in exposed areas of the body. The signs and symptoms persisted for a week and healed without sequellae.

Calcification in the planula and polyp of the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa).

This study examines calcification in planulae and polyps of the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus. We observed that established colonies produce a crystalline mat on their substratum and that crystals visible by polarized light microscopy occur in the vacuoles of the gastrodermal cells of both polyps and planulae. The crystalline mat was found by infrared spectroscopy to contain calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite. The composition of the vacuolar crystals and the cellular mechanisms for manufacturing them were explored by alteration of calcium levels in the environment and by the us

Biochemical and Toxinological Characterization of Venom from Macrorhynchia philippina (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa).

Macrorhynchia philippina is a colonial benthic hydroid from the Class Hydrozoa (Phylum Cnidaria) distributed in the tropical and subtropical marine waters from Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, and Mozambique. Its colonies somewhat resemble plants, causing confusion in the bathers who accidentally touch the animal. Acute burning/local pain, edema, erythema, and pruritus were symptoms already described, but its venom composition is unknown, as well as the participation of toxins for the symptom's development. Thus, herein, we show the biochemical composition and toxic effects of M. philippina venom

Successional dynamics of marine fouling hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) at a finfish aquaculture facility in the Mediterranean Sea.

Aquaculture is increasing rapidly to meet global seafood demand. Some hydroid populations have been linked to mortality and health issues in finfish and shellfish, but their dynamics in and around aquaculture farms remain understudied. In the present work, two experiments, each with 36 panels, tested colonization (factors: depth, season of immersion) and succession (factors: depth, submersion duration) over one year. Hydroid surface cover was estimated for each species, and data were analyzed with multivariate techniques. The assemblage of hydrozoans was species-poor, although species richness

Turritopsis fascicularis Fraser, 1943 (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa): redescription and discussion of its phylogenetic position within the genus.

Turritopsis fascicularis Fraser, 1943 was first described off Alligator Reef, Florida, USA, at a depth of 216 m. Presumably a deep-sea species, its validity has often been questioned due to the scarcity of available records. In this paper, T. fascicularis is re-described from some mature colonies from the upper slope of the Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, new pictures of the colony, polyps, and medusa buds, are provided. A ~600bp sequence of the large ribosomal subunit of the mitochondrial RNA (lsu-rRNA, 16S), also known as the Hydrozoan barcoding molecule, is used for the first time to confirm t

Light and Dark Types of Cladonema pacificum (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa): Reproductive Isolation between the Two Types Leading to Speciation.

Two types of Cladonema pacificum (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) can be distinguished based on whether their medusae spawn after a dark-light transition ("light type") or a light-dark transition ("dark type"). To clarify how these two types are related, we characterized C. pacificum from different sites in the Tohoku region of Japan. Essentially, only dark-type medusae were captured in the Pacific Ocean side, whereas light- and dark-type medusae were found sympatrically at some sampling points in Mutsu Bay and in the Sea of Japan side. We observed that the spawning times of the sympatric light and dark t

An integrative study of Callicarpa gracilis Fewkes, 1881 and Aglaophenia trifida L. Agassiz, 1862, with notes on some hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from French Guiana.

Among the thecate hydroids brought back by the Proteus-Guyane 2017 expedition of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle of Paris, France, from French Guiana, two interesting species are reported upon. The plumulariid Callicarpa gracilis Fewkes, 1881, known so far from the type specimen only, is comprehensively redescribed 140 years after its original description. It adopts two different morphotypes with respect to both its tropho- and gonosome, forming either simple or ramified colonies, with either structurally-complex or rudimentary phylactocarps, respectively. Taxonomic notes on the gener

Dermatitis due to Olindias sambaquiensis: a case report.

Olindias sambaquiensis, Muller 1861 (Hydrozoa: Limnomedusae: Olindiidae) is a neritic jellyfish endemic in the Blanca Bay area (South of Buenos Aires, Argentina). In this paper we describe the first report of a dermatitis caused by this jellyfish in a thirty-four-year-old marine biologist who presented with an erythematous vesicular eruption after contact with Olindias sambaquiensis. Some preliminary ultramicroscopic observations on the nematocysts of this jellyfish are also reported.

A single gene determines allorecognition in hydrozoan jellyfish Cladonema radiatum inbred lines.

Allorecognition-the ability of an organism to discriminate between self and nonself-is crucial to colonial marine animals to avoid invasion by other individuals in the same habitat. The cnidarian hydroid Hydractinia has long been a major research model in studying invertebrate allorecognition, establishing a rich knowledge foundation. In this study, we introduce a new cnidarian model Cladonema radiatum (C. radiatum). C. radiatum is a hydroid jellyfish which also forms polyp colonies interconnected with stolons. Allorecognition responses-fusion or regression of stolons-are observed when stolons

Allogeneic interactions in Hydractinia: is the transitory chimera beneficial?

The colonial marine hydroid, Hydractinia, exhibits four possible outcomes to allogeneic contacts: passive rejection, aggressive rejection, stable fusion and transitory fusion. In the special case of transitory fusion, Hydractinia colonies undergo tissue fusion, followed by tissue death at the original contact area, and colony separation. This type of rejection is different in several aspects from the rejection process that accompanies incompatible encounters. It has been suggested that in transitory fusion, the colonies gain immediate benefits from fusion, mainly due to size increase, without

A review of the siphonophore species mentioned in Haeckel's (1888b) Challenger Monograph.

In his Challenger Monograph Haeckel (1888b) listed a total of 204 species of siphonophores and 36 species of Porpitidae (Disconectae, according to Haeckel), which are now known not to belong to the Siphonophorae. In this paper the siphonophore species have been divided into four categories: a). species that had been described previously by an acknowledged authority other than Haeckel; b). species where Haeckel changed the generic or specific name of a previously described species by another authority, and then ascribed the authority to himself; c). species that Haeckel actually described and i
