Hypertrichosis in a gibbon (Hylobates muelleri).

A case of facial hypertrichosis in a museum specimen of a Bornean gibbon (Hylobates muelleri) is described. Apparently, hypertrichosis has not previously been reported to occur in nonhuman primates. Similar pathological conditions are known to occur in humans, but it is unknown whether any of the numerous forms of human hypertrichosis is equivalent to this case in gibbons.

Fatal strongyloidiasis in gibbons (Hylobates lar).

A 6-year retrospective study of necropsy material from a colony of 200 gibbons showed strongyloidiasis to be the most frequent cause of death (24 cases). Clinical signs included diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, paralytic ileus and dyspnea. Lesions were most frequent in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. In the gut there were erosive and ulcerative enteritis associated with adult female parasites and rhabditiform larvae and acute and granulomatous enterocolitis associated with invading filariform larvae. There was severe multifocal or diffuse hemorrhage associated with migrating larvae i

Successful breeding of the laboratory-housed gibbon (Hylobates lar).

A cage was developed which included a squeeze wall for easy handling of the gibbon (Hylobates lar) and which provided gibbon breeding pairs with privacy from others of the same species. Females living in this environment displayed menstrual and vaginal eversion cycles averaging 30 days (range 22-44). Twelve compatible pairs produced eight live infants from 15 conceptions in a 33-month period. Two full term stillbirths, two abortions, and three current pregnancies accounted for the other seven conceptions. Monthly uterine palpations were performed and pregnancy could be detected as early as 27

The external genitalia of female gibbons, Hylobates (H.) lar.

The external genitalia of one perimenarcheal and five adult female white handed-gibbons (Hylobates (H.) lar) were examined to clarify their gross anatomy. It was found that the vulval structures were complex and exhibited inter-individual variation in arrangement. This complexity appears to result from an ontogenetic process by which the tissues of the vaginal rim (the labia minora) bud-off and extrude extensions toward the vagina immediately prior and subsequent to menarche. Two of these lobular structures surround the urethral meatus and constitute a urethral eminence. The tissues of the vul

Case report: tularaemia in a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar), Germany.

In 2021, a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) succumbed to illness shortly after transfer from one zoo to another in Germany, due to Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica infection. To determine the source of infection, whole genome sequencing of the gibbon-derived isolate was performed and wild pest rodents (and captive squirrels) from both zoos were screened for F. tularensis. The F. tularensis whole genome sequence obtained from the gibbon was closely related to previous subclade B.281 sequences obtained from hares from Baden-Wuerttemberg, the same region where the gibbon was first hous

Morphological basis of arm-swinging: multivariate analyses of the forelimbs of Hylobates and Ateles.

Field and laboratory studies of arm-swinging in gibbons reveal its singularity even compared to spider monkeys. On the basis of principal components and discriminant analyses of size-corrected forelimb variables, this study confirms their morphological uniqueness and the more generalized nature of the spider monkey forelimb. Long forearms, well-developed scapular spines, and sagittally thicker radial shafts are features associated strictly with gibbon arm-swinging. On the other hand, large humeral heads, projecting medial epicondyles, and axially elongated scapulae, traditionally regarded as a

Fatal human herpesvirus type 1 infection in a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar).

This report documents a case of spontaneous, fatal, and likely recrudescent human herpesvirus type 1 (HHV-1) infection in a captive white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An approximately 44-year-old, captive, female, white-handed gibbon with a history of recurrent conjunctivitis and occasional seizures became acutely weak, disoriented, and ataxic. A postictal state was suspected by caretakers and veterinary staff, and euthanasia was ultimately elected because of lack of clinical improvement with supportive care. No significant abnormalities were dete

"Smile-Obates": Permanent Dental Development in the White-Handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri).

OBJECTIVES: Tooth formation is not as well known as eruption among the Hylobatidae. To expand knowledge of variability in dental development in hylobatids, we described the relative timing of upper and lower permanent tooth initiation, mineralization, and completion in the white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar carpenteri). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a wild-shot, known-sex sample of H. lar carpenteri, we micro-CT scanned 44 crania with permanent teeth forming, including a subset of 16 skulls with mandibles. We used these data to assess crypt, crown, and root formation. Each tooth received a den

Morphological integration of the cranium in Homo, Pan, and Hylobates and the evolution of hominoid facial structures.

OBJECTIVES: Modern humans diverge from other extant hominids (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) in a series of craniofacial morphological features. Like hylobatids, they possess a face with a reduced subnasal prognathism that is associated with a globular basicranium. These traits are not independent, as the skull is a complex integrated structure. The aim of the present study is to determine relationships between the face and the basicranium in two hominid genera (Homo and Pan) and a hylobatid genus (Hylobates) to test if these taxa share common patterns of integration linking these stru

Sexual swellings in wild white-handed gibbon females (Hylobates lar) indicate the probability of ovulation.

Conspicuous sexual swellings in the females of some primate species have been a focus of scientific interest since Darwin first wrote about them in 1871. To understand these visual signals, research focused on exaggerated sexual swellings of Old World primates. However, some primate species develop much smaller sexual swellings and it is as yet unclear if these smaller swellings can serve similar functions as those proposed for exaggerated swellings, i.e. advertising fertility to attract mates. We studied the temporal patterns of sexual swellings, timing of ovulation and female reproductive st

Siderophilic bodies associated with hemosiderosis and atypical mycobacterial infection in an island siamang (Hylobates syndactylus).

Laminated iron concretions were noted in the liver of an aged siamang (Hylobates syndactylus) that had granulomatous enteritis and hepatitis due to Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection. Preexisting hepatic siderosis, iron sequestration in macrophages, and compromised macrophage function due to mycobacterial infection are proposed as the basis for the abundance and size of the concretions. Similar siderophilic bodies and concomitant siderosis occurred in other siamangs. The concretions are similar to Schumann bodies and Michaelis-Gutmann bodies associated with granulomatous disease in o

Calcification of the bladder and papillary tumours of the bladder and ureters in gibbons (Hylobates lar) infected with Schistosoma haematobium (Iran).

Many species of nonhuman primates have been employed to find parasite-definitive host combinations which would allow for investigations on different aspects of schistosomiasis haematobia. Gibbons (Hylobates lar), exposed to moderate numbers of Schistosoma haematobium cercariae, have demonstrated some of the basic features of schistosomiasis haematobia in man. Calcification in schistosomiasis haematobia is variable. Radiologically evident calcification of the bladder was noted in one gibbon. Radio-opaque areas in the bladder corresponded to dense deposits of calcified eggs observed on histologi

Quantitative three-dimensional shape analysis of the proximal hallucial metatarsal articular surface in Homo, Pan, Gorilla, and Hylobates.

Multidimensional morphometrics is used to compare the proximal articular surface of the first metatarsal between Homo, Pan, Gorilla, Hylobates, and the hominin fossils A.L. 333-54 (A. afarensis), SKX 5017 (P. robustus), and OH 8 (H. habilis). Statistically significant differences in articular surface morphology exist between H. sapiens and the apes, and between ape groups. Ape groups are characterized by greater surface depth, an obliquely curved articular surface through the dorso-lateral and medio-plantar regions, and a wider medio-lateral surface relative to the dorso-plantar height. The OH

A three-dimensional kinematic analysis of bipedal walking in a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) on a horizontal pole and flat surface.

Gibbons, a type of lesser ape, are brachiators but also walk bipedally and without forelimb assistance, not only on the ground but also on tree branches. The arboreal bipedal walking strategy of the gibbons has been studied in previous studies in relation to two-dimensional (2D) kinematic analysis. However, because tree branches and the ground differ greatly in width, leading to a constrained foot contact point on the tree branches, gibbons must adjust their 3D joint motions of trunk and hindlimb on the tree branches. Furthermore, these motor adjustments could help minimize the center of mass

Sexual swellings of female gibbons.

Female gibbons were observed for labial swellings from March 2002 to August 2003. Data were collected on length of time each female was swollen, changes in swelling period as females matured, and cycle length (number of days between onsets of consecutive swellings). Data were also collected on the behaviour of the males when the females were swollen. There was a significant relationship between age of the female gibbon and number of days she had labial swelling. There was no significant relationship between the age of the gibbon and the cycle length, nor between species (Hylobates agilis albib

A simple technique to repair a hand fracture in a captive Siamang.

A 5-year-old female Siamang (Hylobates syndactilus) in captivity sustained a displaced closed fracture of the proximal phalanx of the middle digit, resulting in finger deformity and hand functional disability. Anatomical reduction and stabilization of the fracture were obtained surgically using two multifilament wire sutures. The primate had a successful functional recovery.
