[Hyperacusis after tympanoplasty].

A case of hyperacusis after tympanoplasty is presented. A 62-year-old woman experienced unilateral conductive hearing loss for about 60 years after antrotomy in infancy. Neurological or otoneurological symptoms were not evident. Tympanotomy showed a missing incus with discontinuity of the chain. Reconstruction was performed by interposition of a partial ossicular replacement prosthesis (PORP). The postoperative audiogram revealed minimal perceptive hearing loss in the high-frequency field in the operated ear. Several weeks after middle ear surgery, the patient complained of hyperacusis on the

Hyperacusis Assessment Questionnaire-A New Tool Assessing Hyperacusis in Subjects with Tinnitus.

Hyperacusis, a kind of decreased sound tolerance, is difficult to measure objectively. It often co-occurs with tinnitus. There is a need for valid and reliable patient-reported outcome measures to capture this subjective phenomenon. The aim of the study was to create a questionnaire capturing hyperacusis in terms of loudness, fear, and pain and to evaluate its psychometric properties. The study sample consisted of 106 adult patients with hyperacusis and tinnitus with a mean age of 45.2 years. A medical interview, an audiological examination, and several questionnaires (the Tinnitus Handicap In

Development and validation of Hyperacusis Handicap Questionnaire in individuals with tinnitus associated with hyperacusis.

INTRODUCTION: Hypersensitivity to sound and tinnitus are often co-morbid and can influence emotional well-being, hearing, sleep, concentration, cause anxiety, and interfere with speech perception in noise. PURPOSE: A clear measure of sensitivity to sound is important as there is dearth in standard protocol for evaluating hyperacusis in individuals with tinnitus. Although there are a few questionnaires to assess hyperacusis, a direct application of these questionnaires in the Indian context would be unfavorable. OBJECTIVES: The study attempts to develop and validate an indigenous Hyperacusis

Assessment of hyperacusis with a newly produced Japanese version of the Khalfa hyperacusis questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of a Japanese version of the Khalfa hyperacusis questionnaire (KHQ) and proposed a threshold KHQ score for classifying hyperacusis. METHODS: In total, 112 patients with hyperacusis (group A) and 103 patients without hyperacusis (group B). The patients in group A were further classified into the following subgroups: subjects with hyperacusis as their chief complaint (n = 26, group A1) and subjects with hyperacusis accompanied by chief complaints of tinnitus and/or hearing loss (n = 86, group A2). RESULTS: The

Prevalence and Characteristics of Patients with Severe Hyperacusis among Patients Seen in a Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to assess the proportion of patients seeking help for tinnitus and/or hyperacusis who have severe hyperacusis and to examine factors associated with severe hyperacusis. RESEARCH DESIGN: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study based on 362 consecutive patients who attended a National Health Service audiology clinic for tinnitus and/or hyperacusis rehabilitation and for whom uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs) had been measured. The criterion for severe hyperacusis was taken as a ULL of 30 dB HL or less for at least one of the measured frequencies for at least o

Association between Hyperacusis and Tinnitus.

Many individuals with tinnitus report experiencing hyperacusis (enhanced sensitivity to sounds). However, estimates of the association between hyperacusis and tinnitus is lacking. Here, we investigate this relationship in a Swedish study. A total of 3645 participants (1984 with tinnitus and 1661 without tinnitus) were enrolled via LifeGene, a study from the general Swedish population, aged 18-90 years, and provided information on socio-demographic characteristics, as well as presence of hyperacusis and its severity. Tinnitus presence and severity were self-reported or assessed using the Tinnit

[Hyperacusis: a mini review].

Hyperacusis refers to the experience of the sound environment being perceived as overwhelmingly loud or painful, and this can severely affect the patient's quality of life. In China little attention has been paid to hyperacusis, and there has been little research undertaken on the topic. Therefore, this article summarizes the recent research on hyperacusis regarding definition, epidemiology, etiology, mechanism, evaluation and treatment to give directions for future research.

Magical ideation and hyperacusis.

The subjective experience conferred by auditory perception has rarely been addressed outside of the studies of auditory hallucinations. The aim of this study is to describe the phenomenology of auditory experiences in individuals who endorse magical beliefs, but do not report hallucinations. We examined the relationship between subjective auditory sensitivity and a 'psychotic-like' thinking style. Hyperacusis questionnaire scores were compared between 25 high scoring participants on Chapman's magical ideation (MI) scale, 25 high scoring participants on Chapman's physical anhedonia scale and 25

Hyperacusis-inducing drug candidates.

Hyperacusis is a troubling loudness hypersensitivity disorder occasionally involving pain around ear and face. The neural origins of hyperacusis and conditions that evoke it are poorly understood. To gain insights into the neural mechanisms that might give rise to hyperacusis, a pharmacovigilance analysis was conducted on 3833 case reports in which hyperacusis was listed as a drug-induced adverse event in the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). The 10 drug classes ranked by the number of reported hyperacusis cases were selective (1) serotonin reup

Hyperacusis in children: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Hyperacusis is a chronic condition commonly defined as a lowered tolerance or increased sensitivity to everyday environmental sounds. It has been viewed as a paediatric disorder which can cause significant impairment to a child's normal functioning. Although clinical guidance highlights the importance of identifying whether the child has intolerance to loud sounds and managing this appropriately, there are currently no assessment or treatment methods that have been designed and tested for use with children with hyperacusis. A review is therefore indicated to consider the profile of

Hyperacusis in children: A clinical profile.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperacusis is commonly seen in clinical paediatric practice and can be distressing for the children and their families. This paper looks at the clinical profile of children seen for hyperacusis in a paediatric audiology service and reviews the possible underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Retrospective study of case notes of 61 children with troublesome hyperacusis seen in the paediatric audiology service, looking at their clinical presentation and presence of other medical conditions. RESULTS: Hyperacusis was the main presenting complaint in more than half of the cases (n = 31, 51%).

Characteristics of hyperacusis in the general population.

There is a need for better understanding of various characteristics in hyperacusis in the general population. The objectives of the present study were to investigate individuals in the general population with hyperacusis regarding demographics, lifestyle, perceived general health and hearing ability, hyperacusis-specific characteristics and behavior, and comorbidity. Using data from a large-scale population-based questionnaire study, we investigated individuals with physician-diagnosed (n = 66) and self-reported (n = 313) hyperacusis in comparison to individuals without hyperacusis (n = 2995).

Phenotypic characteristics of hyperacusis in tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Many people with tinnitus also suffer from hyperacusis. Both clinical and basic scientific data indicate an overlap in pathophysiologic mechanisms. In order to further elucidate the interplay between tinnitus and hyperacusis we compared clinical and demographic characteristics of tinnitus patients with and without hyperacusis by analyzing a large sample from an international tinnitus patient database. MATERIALS: The default dataset import [November 1(st), 2012] from the Tinnitus Research Initiative [TRI] Database was used for analyses. Hyperacusis was defined by the question "Do s
