A 2 day old infant with infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection achieved an arterial oxygen tension greater than 250 mmHg, breathing 100% oxygen. Diagnosis of cardiac disease was delayed several weeks. The anatomical basis for this phenomenon was streaming of systemic venous return across an inferior vena cava type atrial septal defect.

We asked whether hyperoxia might induce hypomyelination of the corpus callosum, clinically described as periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) of the severely preterm infant. Mouse pups and their nursing dams were placed in 80% oxygen from P4-P8, then removed to room air until P11. Corpus callosal sections were probed myelin immunofluorescence, tested for myelin basic protein concentration by Western blot, and both glial fibrillary acidic protein levels and apoptosis quantified. Density of corpus callosal capillaries were measured after lectin staining and hypoxia measured by Hypoxyprobe. Numbers

Perinatal hyperoxia attenuates the adult hypoxic ventilatory response in rats. Hyperoxia might elicit this plasticity by inhibiting chemoreceptor activity during early life. Thus, we hypothesized that stimulating chemoreceptors with CO(2) during hyperoxia or interrupting hyperoxia with periods of normoxia would reduce the effects of hyperoxia on the hypoxic ventilatory response. Rats were born and raised in 60% O(2) for the first two postnatal weeks. Two groups were simultaneously exposed to either sustained hypercapnia (5% CO(2)) or intermittent hypercapnia (alternating 1-h exposures to 0 and

The current practice of mechanical ventilation comprises the use of the least inspiratory O2 fraction associated with an arterial O2 tension of 55 to 80 mm Hg or an arterial hemoglobin O2 saturation of 88% to 95%. Early goal-directed therapy for septic shock, however, attempts to balance O2 delivery and demand by optimizing cardiac function and hemoglobin concentration, without making use of hyperoxia. Clearly, it has been well-established for more than a century that long-term exposure to pure O2 results in pulmonary and, under hyperbaric conditions, central nervous O2 toxicity. Nevertheless,

Despite major advances in obstetrics and neonatal intensive care, preterm infants frequently suffer from neurological impairments in later life. Preterm and also full-term neonates are generally susceptible to injury caused by reactive oxygen species due to the immaturity of endogenous radical scavenging systems. It is well known that high oxygen levels experienced during the critical phase of maturation can profoundly influence developmental processes. Supraphysiological oxygen concentrations used for resuscitation or in the care of critically ill infants are known to have deleterious effects

Several minutes of 100 percent O2 breathing prior to inhalation induction with 79 percent N23 results in consistently higher PaO2 values during the first 10 minutes compared with prior air breathing. The theoretic maximum concentrating action of N2O uptake upon O2 is approximately the same (60 torr) regardless of gas breathed before induction.

AIM: Hyperbaric hyperoxia (HBO) is known to modulate aerobic metabolism, vasoreactivity and blood flow in the brain. Nevertheless, mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects, especially in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke patients, are debated. The present study aimed at investigating regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) distribution during acute HBO exposure.
METHODS: Regional cerebral blood flow response was investigated in seven healthy subjects exposed to either normobaric normoxia or HBO with ambient pressure/inspired oxygen pressure of 101/21 and 250/250 kPa respectively. After

The mammalian colon lumen exists in a highly anaerobic environment (oxygen partial pressure (PO2) < 1 mmHg), which promotes the growth of beneficial obligate anaerobes (OA) while limiting the expansion of pathogenic facultative anaerobes (FA). Gut dysbiosis is associated with a wide range of human diseases, and is often characterized by an overgrowth of FA, particularly those in the Enterobacteriaceae family. Oxygen (O2) plays a crucial role in bacterial physiology and ecology, and increased O2 availability is a key driver of gut dysbiosis. O2 therapy is commonly used for hypoxic patients, eit

Air-breathing animals do not experience hyperoxia (inspired O2 > 21%) in nature, but preterm and full-term infants often experience hyperoxia/hyperoxemia in clinical settings. This article focuses on the effects of normobaric hyperoxia during the perinatal period on breathing in humans and other mammals, with an emphasis on the neural control of breathing during hyperoxia, after return to normoxia, and in response to subsequent hypoxic and hypercapnic challenges. Acute hyperoxia typically evokes an immediate ventilatory depression that is often, but not always, followed by hyperpnea. The hypox

Following the administration of aspirin to rats by gavage, both 2,3- and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate appeared in the plasma. The concentration of the 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate was significantly higher in animals exposed to 100% O2 for 60 h than in air breathing controls. These data are evidence that increased salicylate hydroxylation is associated with oxidative stress.

In rats anesthetized by pentobarbital, hyperoxia, induced by inhalation of 100% O2 for 5 minutes, provokes transient bradycardia and long lasting systemic arterial hypertension. Pure oxygen initially depresses ventilation for 3 minutes. Blockade of alpha 1 adrenergic receptors does not suppress arterial hypertension, which appears to be due to a direct vasoconstriction.

Oxygen supplementation is regularly prescribed to patients to treat or prevent hypoxia. However, excess oxygenation can lead to reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) in healthy subjects and worsen the neurological outcome of critically ill patients. Most studies on the vascular effects of hyperoxia focus on arteries but there is no research on the effects on cerebral capillary pericytes, which are major regulators of CBF. Here, we used bright-field imaging of cerebral capillaries and modeling of CBF to show that hyperoxia (95% superfused O2) led to an increase in intracellular calcium level in per

The effect of maternal inhalation of 50 per cent oxygen upon fetal breathing movements was investigated. No significant effect was noted in patients with normal pregnancies or in those complicated by insulin dependent diabetes or mild pre-eclampsia. A significant increase in fetal breathing movements was observed in those pregnancies complicated by either severe pre-eclampsia or fetal growth retardation.

Normobaric hyperoxia (NBO) is a standard oxygenation intervention for various conditions/diseases including stroke. The present review summarizes the current literature addressing the neuroprotective mechanisms of NBO in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), intracranial hemorrhage, and chronic cerebral ischemia, as well as its combination with other therapies to identify a more appropriate and effective NBO treatment method and to benefit more patients in clinical settings. The primary mechanism of action of NBO is the elevation of the interstitial partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2) i

OBJECTIVE: Hyperoxia has been suggested as a mechanism for secondary injury following adult traumatic brain injury (TBI), but its effects have not been well described in pediatric patients.
METHODS: Pediatric (≤18yo) TBI patients were identified in a prospective institutional registry from October 2008 to April 2022. The first, highest, and the Area Under the Curve (AUC) PaO2 in the first 24 hours were collected and calculated for each patient from arterial blood gas reports after admission to the ICU. Neurological outcome after 6 months was measured using dichotomized modified Rankin Scale (

BACKGROUND: The ideal perioperative oxygen concentration is controversial and study results are inconsistent.
OBJECTIVE: Current knowledge on the beneficial and adverse effects of perioperative hyperoxia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Narrative review RESULTS: Perioperative hyperoxia is unlikely to increase the incidence of atelectasis, pulmonary or cardiovascular complications or mortality. Few and small potential beneficial effects, such as reduction of surgical wound infections or postoperative nausea and vomiting have been demonstrated. According to the current state of evidence, it is recommend

Acute hyperoxia (1 atm) in anesthetized dogs produced a 14% decrease in cardiac output relative to that observed with FIo2 = 0.21 and was associated with 7% decreases in heart rate and stroke volume. Changes in the distribution of peripheral blood flow during hyperoxia, as measured with radioactive labeled microspheres, included decreases in renal cortical flow (-20%), retinal blood flow (-27%), and blood flow to the caudate nucleus, mesencephalon, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Absolute blood flow to intestinal viscera, to respiratory and skeletal muscle, and to fat were unchanged. Simulation o

The brain's high metabolic demands make it highly sensitive to oxygen level changes, with both hypoxia and hyperoxia affecting cognitive and neural function. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to characterise the effects of acute normobaric hypoxia and hyperoxia on neural function and perceptual thresholds using EEG, visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and critical flicker fusion (CFF) thresholds. In a single-blind, randomised, crossover design, thirty participants inhaled 10.5%, 21%, or 100% oxygen while resting-state EEG, VEPs, and CFF thresholds were rec

Preterm infants often experience hyperoxia while receiving supplemental oxygen. Prolonged exposure to hyperoxia during development is associated with pathologies such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and retinopathy of prematurity. Over the last 25 years, however, experiments with animal models have revealed that moderate exposures to hyperoxia (e.g., 30-60% O(2) for days to weeks) can also have profound effects on the developing respiratory control system that may lead to hypoventilation and diminished responses to acute hypoxia. This plasticity, which is generally inducible only during critical

Oxygen in excess is toxic to living tissues and a capacity to neutralise its harmful potential is a requirement for survival. Experimental and circumstantial clinical evidence suggests that the requisite protective mechanisms are insufficiently advanced in the retinal vasculature of the premature neonate, such that babies of very low birth weight are vulnerable to even minor hyperoxia. Sustained hyperoxia produces degenerative effects on the developing endothelium with the result that the newest vessels at the retinal periphery are obliterated. Factors other than the level of inspired oxygen p
