Hyperspectral remote sensing images provide rich spatial and spectral information about the Earth's surface, making them an essential tool for Earth observation. However, existing spaceborne hyperspectral payloads experience slow acquisition speeds and generate large data volumes, posing significant challenges for real-time applications. Moreover, the complex optical design and relatively high cost of traditional hyperspectral payloads hinder their broad-scale in-orbit deployment. In this work, we have proposed and completed the world's first computational imaging-enabled compact spaceborne sn

Single-shot hyperspectral wavefront sensing is essential for applications like spatio-spectral coupling metrology in high-power laser or fast material dispersion imaging. Under broadband illumination, traditional wavefront sensors assume an achromatic wavefront, which makes them unsuitable. We introduce a hyperspectral wavefront sensing scheme based on the Hartmann wavefront sensing principles, employing a multicore fiber as a Hartmann mask to overcome these limitations. Our system leverages the angular memory effect and limited spectral correlation width of the multicore fiber, encoding wavef

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that affect nearly 70%-80% of women in their lifetimes. Fibroids can cause severe pain, bleeding, and infertility. The main risk of recurrence is smaller fibroids, which are notoriously hard to detect, being missed during a surgical removal procedure, only to enlarge afterwards. In this work, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) datasets were acquired from samples from 10 patients after receiving a hysterectomy. Optical properties including absorption, scattering, and spectral morphology were extracted and fed into machine learning to classify re

Accurate retinal imaging is crucial for preclinical research and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for eye diseases. However, existing retinal imaging models often lack the precision needed to replicate the complex optical environment of the eye, limiting their effectiveness in testing and calibration. Current approaches rely heavily on live animals, which pose ethical concerns and variability in results. In this work, we designed a retinal phantom that can be used to validate spatial and spectral properties. We developed a 3D-printed mouse phantom retina to simulate the

Intracellular lasers are emerging as powerful biosensors for multiplexed tracking and precision sensing of cells and their microenvironment. This sensing capacity is enabled by quantifying their narrow-linewidth emission spectra, which is presently challenging to do at high speeds. In this work, we demonstrate rapid snapshot hyperspectral imaging of intracellular lasers. Using integral field mapping with a microlens array and a diffraction grating, we obtain images of the spatial and spectral intensity distribution from a single camera acquisition. We demonstrate widefield hyperspectral imagin

Autofluorescence has historically been considered a nuisance in medical imaging. Many endogenous fluorophores, specifically, collagen, elastin, NADH, and FAD, are found throughout the human body. Diagnostically, these signals can be prohibitive since they can outcompete signals introduced for diagnostic purposes. Recent advances in hyperspectral imaging have allowed the acquisition of significantly more data in a shorter time period by scanning the excitation spectra of fluorophores. The reduced acquisition time and increased signal-to-noise ratio allow for separation of significantly more flu

PURPOSE: This preliminary study aimed at investigating the feasibility and effective of multi-scale hyperspectral imaging in detecting cervical neoplasia at both tissue and cellular levels.
METHODS: In this paper, we describe a noninvasive diagnosis method with a hyperspectral imager for detection and location of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) at multiple scales. At the macroscopic level, the hyperspectral imager was applied to capture the reflectance images of the entire cervix in vivo at a series of wavelengths. At the microscopic level, the hyperspectral imager was coupled with a

Varroa mite infestation poses a severe threat to honeybee colonies globally. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing the HS-Cam and machine learning techniques for Varroa mite counting. The methodology involves image acquisition, dimensionality reduction through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and machine learning-based segmentation and classification algorithms. Specifically, a k-Nearest Neighbors (kNNs) model distinguishes Varroa mites from other objects in the images, while a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier enhances shape detection. The final phase integrates a dedi

OBJECTIVE: Aim of our study was to test a noninvasive HSI technique as an intraoperative real time assessment tool for deceased donor kidney quality and function in human kidney allotransplantation.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: HSI is capable to deliver quantitative diagnostic information about tissue pathology, morphology, and composition, based on the spectral characteristics of the investigated tissue. Because tools for objective intraoperative graft viability and performance assessment are lacking, we applied this novel technique to human kidney transplantation.
METHODS: Hyperspectral ima

BACKGROUND: The spatial and spectral properties of the light environment underpin many aspects of animal behaviour, ecology and evolution, and quantifying this information is crucial in fields ranging from optical physics, agriculture/plant sciences, human psychophysics, food science, architecture and materials sciences. The escalating threat of artificial light at night (ALAN) presents unique challenges for measuring the visual impact of light pollution, requiring measurement at low light levels across the human-visible and ultraviolet ranges, across all viewing angles, and often with high wi

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) shows significant promise in the medical field for tissue detection and perfusion assessment. To extend its application to intraoperative diagnosis, laparoscopic cameras combining a high resolution color video and simultaneous HSI were developed. Spatial scanning in these cameras is performed through a push-broom motor driving a line-scan spectrograph. However, long acquisition times and the necessity of absolute immobility for patient and operator currently limit its usability in the operating room. To provide a hyperspectral acquisition alternative to the traditio

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Among the characteristics that appear in the epidermis of the skin, erythema is primarily evaluated through qualitative scales, such as visual assessment (VA). However, VA is not ideal because it relies on the experience and skill of dermatologists. In this study, we propose a new evaluation method based on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to improve the accuracy of erythema diagnosis in clinical settings and investigate the applicability of HSI to skin evaluation.
METHODS: For this study, 23 subjects diagnosed with atopic dermatitis were recruited. The inside of the right arm

INTRODUCTION: The lips are of significant interest among the facial features for self-perception and social interactions. Such perceptions could rely in part upon the contrast in color between the lips and the surrounding skin. In contrast to skin color, lip color ethnic diversity measurement provides a challenge and is less documented in the literature, most likely due primarily to challenges in measurement based upon the lip characteristics of size and contour. Accurate measurement and reproduction of lip color are essential to build strong cross-sectional knowledge about lip color.

Surface plasmons have proven their ability to boost the sensitivity of mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging by enhancing light-matter interactions. Surface phonons, a counterpart technology to plasmons, present unclear contributions to hyperspectral imaging. Here, we investigate this by developing a plasmon-phonon hyperspectral imaging system that uses asymmetric cross-shaped nanoantennas composed of stacked plasmon-phonon materials. The phonon modes within this system, controlled by light polarization, capture molecular refractive index intensity and lineshape features, distinct from those obse

This study pioneers the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the diagnosis of skin cancer lesions, particularly focusing on Mycosis fungoides (MF) and its differentiation from psoriasis (PsO) and atopic dermatitis (AD). By utilizing a comprehensive dataset of 1659 skin images, including cases of MF, PsO, AD, and normal skin, a novel multi-frame AI algorithm was used for computer-aided diagnosis. The automatic segmentation and classification of skin lesions were further explored using advanced techniques, such as U-Net Attention models and XGBoost algor

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Lack of robust, feasible, and quantitative outcomes impedes Raynaud phenomenon (RP) clinical trials in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) non-invasively measures oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (oxyHb and deoxyHb) concentrations and oxygen saturation (O2 sat) in the skin and depicts data as oxygenation heatmaps. This study explored the potential role of HSI in quantifying SSc-RP disease severity and activity.
METHODS: Patients with SSc-RP (n = 13) and healthy control participants (HC; n = 12) were prospectively recruited in the clinic set

The severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is directly correlated to changes in both the oxygen utilization rate of retinal tissue as well as the blood oxygen saturation of both arteries and veins. Therefore, the current stage of DR in a patient can be identified by analyzing the oxygen content in blood vessels through fundus images. This enables medical professionals to make accurate and prompt judgments regarding the patient's condition. However, in order to use this method to implement supplementary medical treatment, blood vessels under fundus images need to be determined first, and arterie
