Sensorimotor function may be fundamentally limited in hypogravity.

During spaceflight, humans are exposed to unfamiliar gravitational fields and to rapid transitions in the magnitude of these gravitational fields. Many aspects of sensorimotor neural function are altered by these transitions, and adaptation after transitions has been characterized. However, it is important to know whether human physiology has inherent limitations in hypogravity (i.e., gravity between 0 and 1.0 G) that cannot be overcome by adaptation. To address this critical gap, we studied manual control performance using a laboratory-based centrifuge that was configured and used to mimic hy

Effectiveness of CPR in Hypogravity Conditions-A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as a form of basic life support, is critical for maintaining cardiac and cerebral perfusion during cardiac arrest, a medical condition with high expected mortality. Current guidelines emphasize the importance of rapid recognition and prompt initiation of high-quality CPR, including appropriate cardiac compression depth and rate. As space agencies plan missions to the Moon or even to explore Mars, the duration of missions will increase and with it the chance of life-threatening conditions requiring CPR. The objective of this review was to exa

Physiological response to hyper- and hypogravity during rollercoaster flight.

Healthy male subjects--26--were flown in a Lear jet aircraft through rollercoaster and parabolic weightlessness flight. Eye movements, respiration, and blood volume pulse were recorded on magnetic tape. The same subjects underwent a battery of five vestibular tests in the laboratory on the ground. One subject in each flight was flown in an upright position, the other in a 90 degree foreward tilted head position. The foreward tilted subjects always reported motion sickness earlier and after fewer rollercoaster manoeuvres than the upright sitting subjects. It is concluded that the susceptibility

Human Locomotion in Hypogravity: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications.

We have considerable knowledge about the mechanisms underlying compensation of Earth gravity during locomotion, a knowledge obtained from physiological, biomechanical, modeling, developmental, comparative, and paleoanthropological studies. By contrast, we know much less about locomotion and movement in general under sustained hypogravity. This lack of information poses a serious problem for human space exploration. In a near future humans will walk again on the Moon and for the first time on Mars. It would be important to predict how they will move around, since we know that locomotion and mob

Robotic leaping enhanced by thrust-induced hypogravity, achieving precise, predictable, and extended jumps.

Robotic jumping research advances engineering and biomimicry frontiers, prioritizing range, precision, and predictability to navigate unstructured environments. Earth's gravity necessitates powerful actuators and lightweight bodies in robotic designs for maximal jump height. While many robots excel in statical environments, precise, predictable jumps in dynamic settings remain challenging. We realized this with a bipedal robot leveraging thrust-induced hypogravity, alongside dual regulation of aerial attitude and parabolic trajectory via thrust vectoring. Hypogravity multiplies leap range (max

Possible Mechanisms of Axonal Transport Disturbances in Mouse Spinal Motoneurons Induced by Hypogravity.

The data obtained by transcriptome analysis of lumbar spinal cord segments, sciatic nerve, and the respiratory diaphragm of the mice performed after a space flight on board Bion-M1 biosatellite were processed by bioinformatic methods aimed at elucidation of the regularities in hypogravity-induced transcriptome changes in various compartments of motor neurons. The study revealed abnormalities of axonal transport in spinal motor neurons provoked by weightlessness. These data agree with the results of electron microscopy examination of the spinal cord in experimental animals. In space group mice

Perceptual and sensorimotor adaptations to hypogravity: implications for manual task performance and verticality perception.

Hypogravity environments (e.g., 1/6 g on the Moon and 3/8 g on Mars, where gravity is lower than on Earth) profoundly alter the sensorimotor mechanisms underlying spatial orientation, perception, and manual task execution. Understanding these adaptations is essential for ensuring astronaut operational performance. In particular, there is a need for a better understanding of the long-term effects of hypogravity on manual task performance during seated operations, such as piloting, landing, and navigating, which rely on the integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory signals that drive

[Low-gravitational changes in the bone system].

This review surveys reported data and observations made by the present authors concerning the effect of real and simulated hypogravity on bones of man and various animals. Bone biomechanics and mechanisms of osteodystrophic changes in hypogravity are discussed. Based on published data about bone metabolism regulation, the concept of bone formation and degradation in normal gravity and hypogravity is advanced. The conclusion is made that hypogravity-induced changes obey regulation at different levels, with local mechanisms being predominant. It is emphasized that a detailed investigation of eve

Space motion sickness.

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) is the malady which frequently occurs shortly after attainment of sustained exposure to hypogravity. It is characterised by a variety of symptoms, which may proceed to nausea and eventually vomiting. Natural adaptation usually occurs if exposure to hypogravity is maintained. The condition appears to be the manifestation of motion sickness that is specific to hypogravity. It is associated with otolith-canal and otolith-eye conflict. SMS may have operational significance in impairing the performance of spacecraft crews. The condition is likely to be amenable to treatm

The effect of combined compression and tactile stimulation on ankle somatosensation in a lunar gravity lower limb load analog.

Ankle somatosensation appears to be negatively affected when in simulated hypogravity (gravity, 1 > g < 0). Developing countermeasures to reduce this negative effect is necessary for sensorimotor control as astronauts prepare to explore the Moon. Head-elevated supine lying has been found to be an effective method in simulating the physiological impact of hypogravity by reducing the weight-bearing capacity through the lower limbs. This study investigated whether wearing a combined compression sock with plantar textured sole (compression-tactile sock) is associated with enhanced somatosensory ac

The behavioral reactions of a snake and a turtle to abrupt decreases in gravity.

We report here on the behavioral reaction of two reptiles to abrupt decreases in gravity. One striped rat snake, Elaphe quadrivirgata, and three striped-neck pond turtles, Mauremys japonica, were exposed to microgravity on parabolic flight, during the filming of a documentary for the NHK television station in Japan. The video films revealed that the snake reflexively responded to the shift from hyper- to hypogravity by taking up a defensive posture--on the first parabola, the snake struck at itself. The turtles actively extended their limbs and hyper-extended their neck in microgravity, a post

Piracetam and fish orientation during parabolic aircraft flight.

Goldfish were flown in parabolic Keplerian trajectories in a KC-135 aircraft to assay both the effectiveness of piracetam as an anti-motion sickness drug and the effectiveness of state-dependent training during periods of oscillating gravity levels. Single-frame analyses of infrared films were performed for two classes of responses--roll rates in hypogravity or hypogravity orienting responses (LGR) and climbing responses in hypergravity or hypergravity orienting responses (HGR). In Experiment I, preflight training with a vestibular stressor facilitated suppression of LGR by the 10th parabola.

[Effect of branched-chain amino acids mixture on repair of atrophied rats' skeletal muscles].

Loss of muscle mass (atrophy) is a regular consequence of gravitational unloading. In hypogravity, muscle atrophy ensues from depression of protein synthesis and increase of its degradation. Both of these processes underlie also atrophy caused by muscle immobilization, cancer cachexia, cardiomyopathy and age-related sarcopenia. At the same time, atrophy of skeletal muscles due to chronic alcohol intoxication is the outcome of protein synthesis depression primarily. The study was part of a program aimed to develop a technique for atrophied muscle recovery by activation of anabolic signal pathwa

Perception of spatial orientation in microgravity.

Experiments during space and parabolic flights have shown that human spatial orientation in microgravity differs to a significant extent from its performance on earth. Due to the missing reference of gravitational force, unusual perceptual phenomena are observed, from inversion illusions to errors of perceived motion and position with respect to the spacecraft. This article gives an overview of results collected from space missions and parabolic flight campaigns, and proposes new lines of research about the perceptual phenomena of spatial orientation in microgravity. It is shown that most of t

Post-spaceflight orthostatic intolerance: possible relationship to microgravity-induced plasticity in the vestibular system.

Even after short spaceflights, most astronauts experience at least some postflight reduction of orthostatic tolerance; this problem is severe in some subjects. The mechanisms leading to postflight orthostatic intolerance are not well-established, but have traditionally been thought to include the following: changes in leg hemodynamics, alterations in baroreceptor reflex gain, decreases in exercise tolerance and aerobic fitness, hypovolemia, and altered sensitivity of beta-adrenergic receptors in the periphery. Recent studies have demonstrated that signals from vestibular otolith organs play an

X-Ray Imaging in the Simulated Microgravity Environment of Parabolic Flight.

INTRODUCTION: The advancement of human spaceflight has made urgent the need to develop medical imaging technology to ensure a high level of in-flight care. To date, only ultrasound has been used in spaceflight. Radiography has multiple advantages over ultrasound, including lower operator dependence, more rapid acquisition, typically higher spatial resolution, and characterization of tissue with acoustic impedance precluding ultrasound. This proof-of-concept work demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of performing human radiographs in microgravity.METHODS: Radiographs of a phantom and

Influence of microgravity on plasma levels of gastroenteropancreatic peptides: a case study.

BACKGROUND: No data are available about the short- or long-term influences of microgravity in space on the release of gastroenteropancreatic peptides, although these peptides are involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal functions. METHODS: Fasting plasma samples were gained during the EUROMIR-94 mission from a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut who experienced no signs of space motion sickness in orbit. Plasma concentrations of nine gastroenteropancreatic peptides were measured with sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays. RESULTS: Fasting plasma levels of motilin, pancreatic polyp

The effects of roll vs. pitch rotation in humans under orthostatic stress.

BACKGROUND: It has been known since 1953 that pre-exposure to less than +1 Gz will reduce subsequent +Gz-tolerance. With few exceptions, during operational flying, the transition from hypogravity to hypergravity involves roll as well as pitch rotation. We examined the effect of roll vs. pitch rotation while undergoing transition from hypogravity to +1 Gz on a tilt table. METHODS: Twelve subjects (28-47 yr old) were rotated at 45 degrees x s(-1) from head-up (HU) at 15 degrees relative to gravitational vertical to 135 degrees head-down (HD) and back to the HU position after different HD dwell

Ankle Somatosensation and Lower-Limb Neuromuscular Function on a Lunar Gravity Analogue.

Background/Objectives: The adverse effects of low gravity on human physiology are well documented; however, much of the literature is directed at changes which occur in microgravity (µg: weightlessness) with relatively less documented on changes in hypogravity (<1 g; >µg: gravity less than Earth's but more than microgravity). Somatosensation and neuromuscular control may be of particular importance for astronauts as they prepare for future missions to walk on the Moon. This study aimed to explore the effect of reduced weight bearing (to simulate conditions of hypogravity) on ankle somatosensat

Secondary metabolism in simulated microgravity.

We have studied microbial secondary metabolism in a simulated microgravity (SMG) environment provided by NASA rotating-wall bioreactors (RWBs). These reactors were designed to simulate some aspects of actual microgravity that occur in space. Growth and product formation were observed in SMG in all cases studied, i.e., Bacillus brevis produced gramicidin S (GS), Streptomyces clavuligerus made beta-lactam antibiotics, Streptomyces hygroscopicus produced rapamycin, and Escherichia coli produced microcin B17 (MccB17). Of these processes, only GS production was unaffected by SMG; production of the
