Calcium measurements in primates during and after hypokinesia in establishing calcium deficiency during prolonged hypokinesia.

Hypokinesia (diminished movement) induces significant calcium (Ca) changes, but little is known about the effect of hypokinesia (HK) on Ca deficiency. Measuring Ca changes during and after HK the aim of this study was to determine Ca deficiency during prolonged HK. Studies were done on 12 male Macaca mulatta (rhesus monkeys) aged 3-5 yr (5.58-6.42 kg) during a 90-d pre-HK period, a 90-d HK period, and a 15-d post-HK period. Monkeys were equally divided into two groups: vivarium control monkeys (VCM) and hypokinetic monkeys (HKM). Hypokinetic monkeys were kept in small individual cages that res

[Foetal akinesia-hypokinesia deformation sequence].

Foetal akinesia-hypokinesia deformation sequence (FADS) involves arthrogryposis, facial deformations, pulmonary hypoplasia, intrauterine growth retardation, polyhydramnios and short umbilical cord. FADS is caused by lack of foetal movements, most often due to neuromuscular diseases. FADS is associated with a high mortality rate, and the infants usually die due to pulmonary hypoplasia. Antenatal diagnosis by ultrasound is possible when the condition is pronounced, or by genetic investigation, on suspicion of a specific underlying disease with known genetics.

[Hypokinesia, nutrition and lipid metabolism. The effect of protein-vitamin deficiency on serum lipids and lipoproteins in hypokinesia].

Distinct alterations in the reactions responsible for development of lipoprotein hydrophobic nuclei was observed in rat of the August strain maintained for 60 days under conditions of hypokinesia on a ration, containing wheat gluten as a protein source and deficient in retinol, tocopherol and ascorbic acid. Under these conditions the ratio of activities of lipoprotein lipase and liver triglyceride lipase was altered; acylglycerols were accumulated in lipoproteins of low and very low density. Besides, cholesterol esters and their fractions were increased both in blood serum and in individual cl

Physiological effects induced by antiorthostatic hypokinesia.

The main purpose of the present investigation was to reproduce some physiological reactions in the sensory system which are similar to those observed during the first day of the adaptation to weightlessness. This was achieved by a 5-day bed rest experiment during which the test subjects were kept in the antiorthostatic position at angles of 0 degrees, -4 degrees, -8 degrees, -12 degrees. Our investigations allowed simulation of the acute stage of adaptation to weightlessness and assessment of gravity-induced blood redistribution in the development of the above physiological reactions.

[Familial akinesia-hypokinesia sequence (Pena-Shokier phenotype)].

The Pena Shokeir phenotype (PSP) is characterised by multiple ankyloses, camptodactyly, facial dysmorphisms and lung hypoplasia with hydramnios. The basic neuromuscular defect leads, through a fetal hypokinesia-akinesia, to the development of this nonspecific phenotype and a respiratory insufficiency with early postnatal mortality. Severe central nervous anomalies are described in one-third of the reported cases. In this paper a foetus with PSP and 4 further foetuses with severe cerebral malformations and only discrete lung hypoplasia are described. It is not clear whether the cerebral malform

[Pena-Shokeir phenotype (fetal akinesia/hypokinesia sequence)].

Pena-Shokeir syndrome is a rare lethal disorder which clinical phenotype is the result of a deformation sequence caused by fetal akinesia/hypokinesia. In approximately 50 % cases an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance were documented. Main clinical characteristics of Pena-Shokeir syndrome are: multiple ankylosis, pulmonary hypoplasia and facial dysmorphism. We have described female newborn with pulmonary hypoplasia, distal joint contractures and facial characteristics of Pena Shokeir syndrome. Our patient had hip and knee ankyloses, ulnar deviation of the hands, aberrant hand position--sim

Two cases of fetal akinesia/hypokinesia sequence.

Two cases of fetal akinesia sequence are described. Both showed facial anomalies, arthrogryposis multiplex, bilateral camptodactyly, and pulmonary hypoplasia. One child had degeneration of large motor neurons of the thoracolumbosacral spinal cord and irregular atrophy of diaphragm; the other had left microphthalmia, hemiatrophy of the left temporal lobe with calcification of degenerated neurons, and hypoplasia of the cervothoracic spinal cord with decrease and degeneration of neurons. The iliopsoas and intercostal muscles showed focal myofiber atrophy. These findings suggested that some instan

Directional hypokinesia in spatial hemineglect: a case study.

A patient with an ischaemic lesion involving the right frontal lobe and basal ganglia showed left spatial hemineglect in visuomotor exploratory tasks, requiring the use of the right unaffected hand. Her performance was, however, entirely preserved, with no evidence of neglect, when she was required to identify targets among distractors in both the left and right halves of space, and in the Wundt-Jastrow illusion test. The latter tasks do not require any arm movement in extrapersonal space. In this patient spatial hemineglect may be explained in terms of defective organisation of movements towa

[Effect of hypokinesia on vitamin D metabolism in rats].

The effect of short- (7 days) and long-term (28 days) hypokinesia on 25-oxycholecalciferol metabolism was investigated in rats that were fed diets containing adequate amounts of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus. Eighteen hours before sacrifice the animals were injected 3H-25(OH)D3. 3H-metabolites of D3 formed in vivo were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography, and their concentrations in the serum, kidneys, intestinal mucosa and bones were measured. Long-term hypokinesia decreased the content of 3H-1,25(OH)2D3 and increased that of 3H-24,25(OH)2D3 in the serum and kidneys. The e

Prenatal diagnosis of a new syndrome: holoprosencephaly with hypokinesia.

Markedly decreased fetal activity (akinesia/hypokinesia) is usually readily apparent to experienced mothers, and frequently this concern leads to attempts at prenatal diagnosis. We report prenatal diagnosis of two fetuses with congenital contractures, markedly decreased fetal movement, and microcephaly due to severe holoprosencephaly. Such familial recurrence to phenotypically normal parents suggests a newly recognized autosomal recessive or X-linked syndrome that is readily detectable by prenatal ultrasonography.

Recovery from directional hypokinesia and bradykinesia in unilateral neglect.

Patients with acute right hemisphere (RH) damage and left unilateral neglect may exhibit slowness in both the initiation and execution of goal-directed movements toward the contralesional side (respectively, directional hypokinesia and directional bradykinesia). We retested 13 patients with RH damage, who on initial testing 1 year earlier had shown these impairments on a visually cued sequential movement task. Initiation and execution times were measured separately for leftward and rightward movement sequences, performed in either hemispace and across the body midline. Patients with anterior/s

Microcephaly, holoprosencephaly, hypokinesia--second report of a new syndrome.

Two still-born males whose mothers were sisters are presented. The features holoprosencephaly, hypokinesia, microcephaly, talipes, and other contractures correspond to those in the two male sibs reported by Morse et al. (1987). We suggest that our cases now provide evidence of an X-linked rather than an autosomal recessive new syndrome.

Progressive bradykinesia and hypokinesia of ocular pursuit in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Parkinson's disease characteristically have difficulty in sustaining repetitive motor actions. The purpose of this study was to establish if parkinsonian difficulty with sustaining repetitive limb movements also applies to smooth ocular pursuit and to identify any pursuit abnormalities characteristic of Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Ocular pursuit in seven patients with moderate to severe bradykinesia predominant Parkinson's disease was compared with seven age matched controls. Predictive and non-predictive pursuit of constant velocity target ramps were examined. Sub

Water metabolism in rats under hypokinesia and during readaptation.

It has been suggested that hypokinesia (diminished muscular activity)* may induce substantial changes in water metabolism in animal tissues. Thus, the objective of this study was to try to determine water metabolism reactions in 115 rats weighing 156-168 g under hypokinesia (HK) of 60-days and during the readaptation period (RP) of 15-days. All of the examined rats were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group of rats were subjected to pure HK, that is, without the use of any preventive measures, and the control group placed under ordinary vivarium conditions and se

Nitrogen metabolism in man under hypokinesia and physical exercise.

Experimental studies of hypokinetic physiology are generally based on the assumption that diminished muscular activity (progressive reduction of number of steps per day) is hostile to animal and human organisms, since the entire animal kingdom has been formed in a high motor activity environment, which left its imprint on the evolution, structure, function and behavior of living organisms. It has been suggested that physical exercise may be used to prevent changes in man's nitrogen metabolism under hypokinesia. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical exercise in atte

DPAGT1-CDG: report of a patient with fetal hypokinesia phenotype.

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are due to either defects in the synthesis of the glycan moiety of glycoproteins or glycolipids and in the attachment of the glycans to proteins and lipids. Some 50 CDG have been identified. They represent a challenge for clinicians because most are multisystem diseases with a heterogeneous spectrum of clinical manifestations with involvement of any organ and system. We report on a patient with a mutation in the glycosyltransferase encoded by the DPAGT1 gene, an infrequent CDG. He showed severe fetal hypokinesia phenotype with decreased fetal movemen
