[Role of computerized tomography in the TNM staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal neoplasms].

70 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of larynx and hypopharynx were examined by computed tomography; the TNM staging of tumors by CT, by endoscopy and by surgical operation was reviewed. CT proved to be reliable both to recognize the presence of neoplasms, with the exception of those very superficial, and their deep spreading to pre-epiglottic and para-laryngeal spaces, to the soft tissues of the neck and to the cartilages. Therefore CT is the examination of choice in laryngeal neoplasms staging, because it precisely completes the clinical and endoscopical informations.

Comparative efficacy of six therapies for Hypopharyngeal and laryngeal neoplasms: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal and laryngeal neoplasms are both fatal and hard to catch in early stages. Yet which treatment is the most efficacious one still remain unanswered. This network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to investigate effectiveness of six therapies being utilized in clinical practice nowadays. METHODS: PubMed and Embase were retrieved to synthesize data. Direct and indirect evidence was combined to compare efficacy of treatments. A relative ranking of the six regimens was calculated by the surface under the curve ranking area (SUCRA). RESULTS: A total of 28 trials with 9109

Impact of the early detection of esophageal neoplasms in hypopharyngeal cancer patients treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

AIMS: We examined the risk factors and prognostic factors for synchronous esophageal neoplasia (SEN) by comparing the characteristics of hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) patients with and without SEN. METHODS: We examined 183 patients who were treated with definitive radiotherapy for HPC. Lugol chromoendoscopy screening of the esophagus was performed in all patients before chemoradiotherapy. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients had SEN, 49 patients died of HPC and two died of esophageal cancer. The patients with SEN exhibited significantly higher alcohol consumption than those without SEN (P = 0.018). Th

Image-enhanced endoscopy for detection of second primary esophageal neoplasms in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer: Prevalence, risk factors, and characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal second primary neoplasms (ESPNs) are common in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) patients and are associated with poor prognoses. The effectiveness of image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) has not been well established. METHODS: We reviewed the patients between April 2016 and April 2018 with HPSCC receiving ESPNs screening via white-light imaging, narrow-band imaging, and Lugol chromoendoscopy. RESULTS: Of 99 eligible patients, ESPNs prevalence was 31%. Of the 69 patients assigned to the follow-up group, 23 with positive findings showed significantly increased pr

Hypopharyngeal paraganglioma: a case report.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily afflict patients during the fourth and fifth decades of life. The majority of extra-adrenal paragangliomas arise in the head and neck region, notably from the carotid and aortic bodies, jugular bulb and tympanic plexus. Although one-fifth of all parapharyngeal neoplasms are paragangliomas, primary hypopharyngeal paraganglioma is relatively uncommon, only one other case having previously been documented by Filippin et al. (1989). We report a second case of hypopharyngeal paraganglioma in an 18-year-old male as seen in our center.

[Pretreatment dysphagia in patients with advanced head and neck cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To define swallowing dysfunctions in head and neck cancer patients with respect to tumor site. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 52 patients with stage III-IV head and neck cancer without prior tracheotomy or treatment were studied according to tumor site: oral cavity (n = 8), oropharynx (n = 8), hypopharynx (n = 13) and larynx (23). All patients underwent nasoendoscopy prior to treatment. Swallowing function (dysphagia, aspiration and Swallowing Performance Status Seale score) was analyzed with reference to tumor localization using chi 2 and Fisher exact tests. RESULT

[Laryngopharyngectomy and free jejunal graft reconstruction in the treatment of hypopharyngeal tumors].

The authors performed a total laryngopharyngectomy due to a hypopharyngeal neoplasm. The continuity of the alimentary tract was restored by the insertion of a vascularized free jejunal graft, using microsurgical technique. On the occasion of this case the authors give a survey of the therapeutical methods used in the therapy of hypopharyngeal tumors, of the indications of the free jejunal transplant and of the technical issues and complications of this procedure.

Metastatic carcinoma of breast in the hypopharynx.

We have described a case of multiple metastases in the hypopharynx found at autopsy in a 43-year-old woman with carcinoma of the breast. No symptoms related to the hypopharyngeal lesions were recorded. A metastasis, although rare, should be included in the differential diagnosis of a hypopharyngeal lesion since it may clinically mimic a benign neoplasm or primary carcinoma.

[Thyroid gland and carcinoma of the hypopharyngeal-laryngeal region].

The thyroid gland harbours many diseases which require a surgical treatment; the gland may also be involved by some secondary malignant neoplasms. Such type of involvement by laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers is more often due to direct extension rather than metastases. In this paper the Authors report their experience of tumoral involvement of the thyroid gland in 35 patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer observed from 1986 to 1990. All patients had an epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx or hypopharynx that required an hemithyroidectomy (always plus isthmectomy) or an isthmectomy

Hypopharyngeal paraganglioma: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are rare, vascular, and predominantly benign neoplasms of neural crest origin. They typically arise in the head and neck from the carotid body, jugulotympanic, or vagal paraganglia. Rarely, paragangliomas occur in the larynx. Only 2 cases of hypopharyngeal paraganglioma have been reported. We discuss the case of a hypopharyngeal paraganglioma and review the literature concerning laryngopharyngeal paragangliomas. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present the case of a woman with 2 months of dysphagia and hoarseness that was found to have a hypopharyngeal paraganglioma. The pat

True hypopharyngeal carcinosarcoma: a case report and literature review.

Objective Carcinosarcoma consists of carcinomatous and sarcomatous tissues and is an aggressive malignant tumor. It is rarely reported in the hypopharynx. Methods A 72-year-old man presented with dysphagia and dyspnea. Laryngoscopy, computed tomography (CT), and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT (18F-FDG PET/CT) showed a neoplasm on the left posterior hypopharyngeal wall. The patient underwent bilateral neck dissection and excision of the hypopharyngeal cancer followed by postoperative radiation therapy. Basosquamous carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx with sudden death from asphyxia.

Excluding laryngeal papillomas, neoplasms of the hypopharynx rarely cause sudden asphyxial death in adults. We describe the first such death from a carcinoma and review the literature for similar cases since 1966. A high clinical index of suspicion and early laryngoscopy in individuals with symptoms suggestive of hypopharyngeal neoplasia are important.

Nd: YAG laser treatment for adult hypopharyngeal haemangioma.

Adult hypopharyngeal haemangioma is an uncommon neoplasm. We present three cases of adult hypopharyngeal haemangioma which were successfully treated with a neodymium: yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Nd: YAG) laser in our hospital between 2000 and 2003. The patients in this series experienced no untoward events from the use of the laser. Excessive bleeding and airway problems were not encountered. Postoperative pain was minimal. Excellent long-term function and a full resolution of symptoms can be obtained using Nd: YAG laser. The laser provides a bloodless field and complete healing of the hypophary

[The clinical and pathological features of the hypopharyngeal lipomas].

Lipomas of the hypopharynx are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. The tumours have been reported to represent approximately 0.6 percent of benign tumours of the larynx. To date, there are approximately 80 cases of laryngeal lipomas reported in the literature. In this paper we report a new case of hypopharyngeal lipoma and discuss its clinical and pathological features and treatment.

Head and neck carcinoma in patients under 40 years of age.

From 1965-1978 over 2,700 patients were admitted to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary or the Massachusetts General Hospital with carcinoma of the oropharynx, larynx or nasopharynx; only 36 of these patients were less than 40 years of age. Twelve patients had oropharyngeal carcinoma, 13 patients had laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma, and 11 patients had nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Analysis of these patients indicates an increased incidence of head and neck cancer in younger females. In patients less than age 31 there was no significant social history which contributed to early onset of
