Immediate Outcome of Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy in Hypoxiate Newborns in Nepal Medical College.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is the fifth major cause of under-five child deaths after pneumonia, diarrhoea, neonatal infections and complications of preterm birth. It is one of the important causes of neonatal mortality and morbidity accounting up to 30% of neonatal death in Nepal. It is also an important cause of long-term neurological disability and impairment. The mortality rate due to birth asphyxia is considered a good guide to the quality of perinatal care. This study was conducted to assess the rate of birth asphyxia, risk factors and outcome of the babies who were asphyxiated at birth.

Antihypoxic effect of the hydroxylamine derivative HB-7.

The antihypoxic effect of the newly-synthesized hydroxylamine barbiturate HB-7, compared with the effects of phenobarbital and pentobarbital, was studied in experiments on albino mice, using the following models of hypoxia: hypobaric, anoxic, asphyctic and haemic. A dose-effect dependence was established when the survival of the mice was prolonged under the effects of the barbiturates tested, applying the asphyctic and haemic hypoxy tests. The latter two tests were also used to determine the average effective doses (ED60) of the barbiturates. HB-7 was superior in its action to phenobarbital an

[The role of brain stem lesions in cerebral circulatory disorders accompanying severe cranio-cerebral injuries].

Clinical and anatomical comparisons were undertaken in 23 cases of mortality due to severe craniocerebral injuries. The set of clinical examinations included circulation and brain gas exchange studies. Cerebral circulatory hypoxy was revealed in all the patients, but in cases of its compensated form all signs of brain stem injury were lacking, while in cases of its non-compensated form foci of brain stem injury could be revealed at autopsy. Timely elimination of brain stem compression in cases of its anatomic integrity preserved helps to convert the non-compensated form of cerebral circulatory

Bioembolisation for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma: preliminary results of a translational research study.

Lack of effective treatment for surgically unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma has made this disease dismal. Although, systemic and/or locoregional chemotherapy and chemo-embolization are among the established treatment options, the results of these modalities are still far from being satisfactory. Systemic interferon administration is also used for the treatment of this disease however it has high toxicity rates. We conducted a pharmacology guided phase I/II study with the aim to explore the effect of hypoxy and interferon alpha-2a in vitro using the HepG2 Hepatoma cell line. We then transl

[Regulation of interrelation between pulmonary ventilation and circulation].

In acute experiments on 92 cats anesthetized with Urethane and kept under controlled respiration the mechanism of tonic activity of the pulmonary vessels was studied in the presence of a decreased partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli. The tonicity of the pulmonary vessels was recorded during autoperfusion of the vessels of the posterior lobe of the left lung by means of a perfusion pump. Simultaneously, the pressure in the common carotid artery was recorded and the oxygen saturation of the blood was measured. Pharmacological analysis was used for the study of the mechanism of the pressor

Lactate dehydrogenase and oxidative stress activity in primary open-angle glaucoma aqueous humour.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and lactate are some of the hypoxy biochemical parameters. Extracellular activity of this enzyme increases under the condition of oxidative stress, since the cell integrity can be disrupted during the lipid peroxidation process. Subsequently that leads to the increase level of the lactic acid and lactic acid salts. The objective of this investigation is establishing the level of LDH, LDH1 (HBDH) and the lactate concentration in aqueous humour in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Biochemical analysis have been made by enzymatic-colometric method (lactate) an

[Arterial blood supply of the liver].

We examined (dogs) the influence of hypovolaemic shock and reversible interruption of the portal vein on the arterial blood flow and metabolism of the liver. Depending on the arterial mean-pressure hypovolaemic shock decreases the flowrate of the hepatic artery, while it is increases to 30 to 40% during interruption of the portal vein. Whether hypoxy will cause liver damage or not is only dependant from the resulting oxygen supply of the liver. This critical range is below 6 to 7 ml/min per 100 g liver tissue.
