The Physical Oceanography of Ice-Covered Moons.

In the outer solar system, a growing number of giant planet satellites are now known to be abodes for global oceans hidden below an outer layer of ice. These planetary oceans are a natural laboratory for studying physical oceanographic processes in settings that challenge traditional assumptions made for Earth's oceans. While some driving mechanisms are common to both systems, such as buoyancy-driven flows and tides, others, such as libration, precession, and electromagnetic pumping, are likely more significant for moons in orbit around a host planet. Here, we review these mechanisms and how t

Ice cover affects the growth of a stream-dwelling fish.

Protection provided by shelter is important for survival and affects the time and energy budgets of animals. It has been suggested that in fresh waters at high latitudes and altitudes, surface ice during winter functions as overhead cover for fish, reducing the predation risk from terrestrial piscivores. We simulated ice cover by suspending plastic sheeting over five 30-m-long stream sections in a boreal forest stream and examined its effects on the growth and habitat use of brown trout (Salmo trutta) during winter. Trout that spent the winter under the artificial ice cover grew more than thos

Annual nitrification dynamics in a seasonally ice-covered lake.

We investigated the variability in ammonia oxidation (AO) rates and the presence of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria (AOB and AOA) over an annual cycle in the water column of a small, seasonnally ice covered, temperate shield lake. AO, the first step of nitrification, was measured in situ using 15N-labelled ammonium (NH4+) at 1% and 10% of photosynthetic active radiation during day and at the same depths during night. AO was active across seasons and light levels, ranging from undetectable to 333 nmol L-1 d-1 with peak activity in winter under ice cover. NH4+ concentration was the single

Distribution of mercury and methylmercury in ice-water-sediments in lakes during the freezing period under the influence of ice cover.

The presence of lake ice cover alters the subglacial water environment, thereby influencing the migration and transformation of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) within the ice-water-sediment media of lakes. This study investigated the occurrence characteristics of mercury and methylmercury in various environmental compartments within lakes located at high latitudes in cold regions during the freezing period. To this end, Wuliangsuhai Lake, the largest freshwater lake situated at 40°N in China, was selected as the study site. The contents of mercury and methylmercury in lake ice were deter

Contrasting the ecological effects of decreasing ice cover versus accelerated glacial melt on the High Arctic's largest lake.

Lake Hazen, the High Arctic's largest lake, has received an approximately 10-fold increase in glacial meltwater since its catchment glaciers shifted from net mass gain to net mass loss in 2007 common era (CE), concurrent with recent warming. Increased glacial meltwater can alter the ecological functioning of recipient aquatic ecosystems via changes to nutrient budgets, turbidity and thermal regimes. Here, we examine a rare set of five high-resolution sediment cores collected in Lake Hazen between 1990 and 2017 CE to investigate the influence of increased glacial meltwater versus alterations to

Seasonal shifts in mercury speciation and relative methylation potential in cold-arid seasonally ice-covered lakes.

Approximately 50% of global lakes experience seasonal ice cover for an average of 217.5 days per year, a period that has traditionally been regarded as an ecological "dormant phase". During this period, lake ice regulates light availability, thermal structure, gas exchange, redox conditions, and hydrodynamic processes, all of which can influence mercury (Hg) speciation, transport, and transformation. However, most Hg biogeochemistry studies have focused on the open-water period, leaving Hg cycling during the ice-covered period insufficiently understood. To address this knowledge gap, six repre

Distinct benthic and planktonic microbial communities within the stratified water column of the perennially ice-covered Lake Joyce, Antarctica.

Perennially ice-covered lakes are hotspots of biodiversity and biomass accumulation in polar deserts. Many Antarctic perennially ice-covered lakes are density stratified, within which an oxygenated upper layer overlies deeper, darker anoxic waters. We carried out the first 16S and 18S rRNA gene high throughput sequencing of microplankton and benthic microbial mats in perennially ice-covered Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. We evaluated community composition and richness at different lake and water depths, and determined the level of connectivity of benthic and planktonic microbial

Regulation of mercury and methylmercury migration and transformation at the sediment-water interface of a seasonally ice-covered lake by temperature and illumination: A mesocosm experiment.

Under snow-covered conditions during the ice-covered period, lakes remain in a low-temperature environment with weak light or even complete darkness for an extended period. These conditions markedly influence the regulatory effects of temperature and illumination on the migration and transformation of mercury and methylmercury. Taking Wuliangsuhai Lake, the largest natural wetland at 40°N latitude, as the study object, a mesocosm experiment was conducted to determine the concentrations of mercury and methylmercury in overlying water and pore water under different light and temperature conditio

Biogenic silica fluxes in the seasonally ice-covered Northwind Ridge, western Arctic Ocean: drivers and implications for the biological carbon pump.

The silica cycle is intimately coupled with marine food-web dynamics, biogeochemical transformations, and the efficiency of the biological carbon pump (BCP). To elucidate the factors controlling biogenic silica (bSiO2) flux and its role in carbon export, we conducted a year-long (August 2008-September 2009) sediment trap deployment on the Northwind Ridge in the western Arctic Ocean. BSiO2 fluxes exhibited a pronounced seasonal signal, closely paralleling those of particulate organic carbon (POC) and diatoms, with mean fluxes in 2009 tripling those of 2008. This interannual disparity was primar

Hierarchical Structure with Microcrater Covered with Nanograss Enhancing Condensation and Its Antifrosting/Anti-Icing Performance Inspired by Euphorbia helioscopia L.

Over an extended period of evolution and natural selection, a multitude of species developed a diverse array of biological interface features with specific functions. These biological structures provide a rich source of inspiration for the design of bionic structures on superhydrophobic surfaces. Understanding the functional mechanism of plant leaves is of paramount importance for the advancement of new engineering materials and the further promotion of engineering applications of bionic research. The hierarchical structure of microcrater-covered nanograss (MCNG) on the surface of E. helioscop

Methane cycling in typical emerging proglacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau: Insights into the metabolic mechanisms mediated by microorganisms.

A large number of high-latitude emerging proglacial lakes have formed on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) due to the global warming and deglaciation. These lakes have the potential to emit methane (CH4) because of the exposure of cryopreserved organic carbon, leading to their significance in regional carbon turnover and cycling. However, previous studies have focused more on human-impacted lakes (e.g., eutrophic lakes), resulting in limited research on the mechanisms of CH4 cycling in the proglacial lakes. In this study, we demonstrated that three typical emerging high-latitude proglacial lakes (∼5500

Trajectory of increased iceberg kill-off in West Antarctica's shallows.

Compared with low latitude coasts, many polar latitudes are still little impacted by intense and direct anthropogenic stressors. Climate forcing is now bringing rapid physical change to nearshore polar realms. In the shallow coastal waters adjacent to the United Kingdom's Rothera Research Station in the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), 225 seabed markers at 5-25 m depth have been surveyed and replaced every year from 2002-2023 (75 markers at each of 5, 10 and 25 m). This is one of the longest continuously running marine disturbance experiments in the world, in one of Earth's fastest changing en

Comparative study on lake ice phenology changes and driving factors in large lakes of mid-latitude Xinjiang, China.

The changes in lake ice phenology (LIP) can intuitively reflect the climate evolution in the regions where lakes are located, serving as an important indicator of climate change. The Tianshan Mountains, situated at the southern edge of freezing lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, are a crucial water resource base in Xinjiang and support significant ecosystems closely related to human activities. In the context of intensified climate change, this study focuses on the geographical location, altitude, and water quality differences among large lake groups in the mid-latitude region of Xinjiang, aimi

Importance of precipitation and dust storms in regulating black carbon deposition on remote Himalayan glaciers.

Black carbon (BC) can be transported over long distances and is an important trigger of climate warming and glacier melting at remote high mountains and polar regions. It is normally assumed that the variation of BC flux in remote regions is dominated by its emissions. However, after a comprehensive investigation of potential influencing factors on temporal variations of BC from ice cores of the Himalayas, this short communication shows that in addition to BC emissions, contributions from dust storms and precipitation are also important (up to 56% together) in regulating the variation of BC de

In-situ comparison of interface instability of basal and edge planes during unidirectional growth of sea ice.

The evolutions of water/ice interface with distinct ice orientations are one of the central problems in sea ice growth. Some misunderstandings prevailed in previous hypothesis on morphological evolution of sea ice, which need the validation with carefully designed experiments. Up to now, there is no in-situ comparison of unidirectional freezing behavior between distinct ice orientations, which makes the previous hypothesis on sea ice growth skeptical about its physical basis. The aim of this paper is to provide an in-situ comparison of unidirectional growth behavior of lamellar sea ice between

Influence of Meltwater Percolation on Preservation of Organic Aerosol Tracers in Glacier Archives.

Ice cores are valuable archives for reconstructing past atmospheric aerosol composition. However, their interpretability is increasingly challenged by climate change, which accelerates melting and may lead to the vertical relocation or loss within the firn or ice matrix of organic and inorganic impurities. Using a hybrid target/nontarget screening approach, we present a comprehensive assessment of organic compound preservation from a firn core collected at the Grand Combin (Switzerland) covering the period 2008-2020. A total of 248 different molecules were identified, mainly secondary organic

Pleistocene glaciation advances the cryptic speciation of Stellera chamaejasme L. in a major biodiversity hotspot.

The mountains of Southwest China comprise a significant large mountain range and biodiversity hotspot imperiled by global climate change. The high species diversity in this mountain system has long been attributed to a complex set of factors, and recent large-scale macroevolutionary investigations have placed a broad timeline on plant diversification that stretches from 10 million years ago (Mya) to the present. Despite our increasing understanding of the temporal mode of speciation, finer-scale population-level investigations are lacking to better refine these temporal trends and illuminate t

Systematic Review of Metallic, Industrial, and Pharmaceutical Emerging Contaminants in Snow and Ice: A Global Perspective from Polar and High-Mountain Regions.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) comprise diverse pollutant classes that are increasingly detected in remote environments due to their persistence and long-range transport potential. In cold regions, atmospheric cold-trapping processes favour their accumulation in high-altitude and high-latitude snow and ice, which act as sensitive archives and secondary sources of contamination. While previous studies have addressed individual environmental compartments (e.g., snowpack, glacier ice, meltwater), focusing on specific contaminant classes, a systematic review integrating the occurrence, behaviour and

Phenolic Iron Complexes Protect Glacier Ice Algae (Zygnematophyceae) Against Excessive UV and VIS Irradiation.

Melting glacier surfaces are increasingly affected by blooms of psychrophilic microalgae, which darken the ice and lower its albedo, accelerating melting. These microalgae contain distinct vacuoles filled with brownish pigments that were earlier described as the unusual plant phenol purpurogallin. Recently, we discovered so far unreported, large amounts of iron dissolved in aqueous extracts of the glacier ice algae Ancylonema alaskanum. Since the vacuole content was very dark but the chromatographically isolated, aforementioned phenol was only yellowish, a putative complexation of iron with pu
