Vascular corrosion replicas of chemo-baroreceptors in fish: the carotid labyrinth in Ictaluridae and Clariidae.

Scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion replicas and light microscopy revealed a pair of highly vascularized tissues, the carotid labyrinths, in the dorsal head region of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, the black bullhead, I. melas, and the walking catfish, Clarias batrachus. The labyrinth consists of a myriad of arterioles that arise from the common carotid artery immediately distal to the origin of the common carotid from the efferent branchial (epibranchial) artery of the first gill arch. The arterioles anastomose with each other to form: (1) the internal carotid artery

Redescription of Corallobothrium solidum (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea) and erection of a new genus, Essexiella, for tapeworms from channel catfishes (Ictaluridae).

The proteocephalidean tapeworm, Corallobothrium solidum, type species of the genus, is redescribed on the basis of the examination of its type specimens and extensive material recently collected from Malapterurus electricus (type host). Some morphological characteristics of taxonomic importance are reported for the first time, such as the presence of semispherical (U-shaped) sphincters on the external (outer) margin of the suckers, a vaginal sphincter, a well-developed seminal receptacle, and a unique morphology of the eggs. Corallobothrium solidum differs from the 2 remaining species of the g

Supplemental diagnosis of Gyrodactylus nebulosus Kritsky and Mizelle, 1968 (Monogenea) on 0+ age Ameiurus nebulosus (Siluriformes) considered for commercial grow-out in Southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada.

Gyrodactylus nebulosus Kritsky and Mizelle, 1968 is reported for the first time from brown bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus (Siluriformes; Ictaluridae) in Nova Scotia. The study results from a screening of parasites with the potential to disrupt commercial rearing of wild-caught young-of-the-year (YOY) brown bullhead. Infected YOY were collected July 30, 2018 and estimated to be 3 weeks old. Eight of 10 fish were infected. Mean intensity was 3.1 ± 3.5 with a range of 1-10. The parasite occurred all over the body surface, but particularly on the ventral regions of the head including the base of the

Morphometric and genetic evidence for cryptic diversity in Gyrodactylus (Monogenea) infecting non-native European populations of Ameiurus nebulosus and A. melas.

Gyrodactylid parasites were observed on non-native populations of North-American freshwater catfishes, Ameiurus nebulosus and Ameiurus melas (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae), at several sites in the Elbe River basin, Czech Republic, Europe. Using a combination of morphological and genetic analyses, the parasites infecting A. nebulosus were determined to be Gyrodactylus nebulosus, a North American parasite co-introduced to Europe along with its Ameiurus fish hosts. Subtle morphometrical differences, as well as seasonal variations, were observed among parasites collected from A. nebulosus and A. mela

Mechanisms of ion and acid-base regulation at the gills of freshwater fish.

This review examines the branchial mechanisms utilized by freshwater fish to regulate internal acid-base status and presents a model to explain the underlying basis of the compensatory processes. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus, were examined under a variety of experimental treatments which induced respiratory and metabolic acid-base disturbances. Acid-base regulation was achieved by appropriate adjustments of Na+ and Cl- net fluxes across the gills which, in turn, were accomplished by variable contributions of three different branchial mechanisms: 1

The pathology associated with visceral toxicosis of catfish.

Visceral toxicosis of catfish (VTC) syndrome was recognized in the late 1990 s and recently has been associated with exposure to Clostridium botulinum type E neurotoxin. Tentative diagnosis is based on clinical presentation and gross findings, and is confirmed by bioassay. In April 2009, channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) from 2 different farms presented with abnormal swimming behavior and mortalities. Nine fish were submitted to the Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (Stoneville, Mississippi) for evaluation. Bacterial cultures from these fish were negative. Necropsy findings includ

Branchial chemoreceptors mediate ventilatory responses to hypercapnic acidosis in channel catfish.

The effects of hyperoxic hypercapnia on cardiovascular and ventilatory variables and blood gas and acid/base parameters were examined in conscious and anesthetized spontaneously breathing (ASB) channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. These separate experiments were designed to determine: (1) if channel catfish show a ventilatory response to hypercapnic acidosis when blood O(2) content is maintained in conscious animals; and (2) whether branchial receptors innervated by cranial nerves IX and X mediate this response. The combination of high O(2) and CO(2) tensions allowed the cardioventilatory eff

Characterization of the sex determining region of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and development of a sex-genotyping test.

Channel catfish is an important species for aquaculture that exhibits a sexually dimorphic growth in favor of males. Genetic sexing and development of sex markers are crucial for the early identification of sex and of particular genotypes (YY males) for the production of all-male population in channel catfish aquaculture. In this study, we sequenced genomic DNA from pools of males and pools of females to better characterize the sex determining region (SDR) of channel catfish and to develop sex-specific markers for genetic sexing. Performing comparative analyses on male and female pooled genomi

Determination of the median lethal dose of botulinum serotype E in channel catfish fingerlings.

The median lethal dose of botulinum serotype E in 5.3-g channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus fingerlings was determined. Five tanks (five fish/tank) were assigned to each of the following treatment groups: 70, 50, 35, 25, or 15 pg of purified botulinum serotype E. Fish were injected intracoelomically and observed for 96 h. Administration of the toxin resulted in initial hyperactivity followed by erratic swimming, paresis, and death. The cumulative mortality by treatment group was 100% at 70 pg, 96% at 50 pg, 100% at 35 pg, 88% at 25 pg, and 56% at 15 pg. The median lethal dose was calculated as

Distribution and innervation of lateral line organs in the channel catfish.

The lateral line system of the channel catfish is formed by mechanoreceptive neuromasts located within five pairs of cephalic and one pair of trunk canals, as well as superficial lines of neuromasts, termed accessory and/or pit lines. Five pairs of pit lines occur on the head, and three pairs of superficial lines occur on the trunk. In addition to these mechanoreceptors, which are found in most teleost fishes, catfish also possess a total of over 4000 electroreceptive ampullary organs scattered over the entire body. The lateral line receptors are innervated by five pairs of lateral line nerves

Efficacy determination of a disinfectant against channel catfish virus by in vitro and in vivo methods.

Channel catfish virus (CCV) poses a significant threat to catfish culture. Lack of effective vaccines and antiviral treatments necessitates effective disinfection strategies to mitigate its spread. In vitro trials indicated the virus to be inactivated at high temperatures, but was infectious at 40°C. This study evaluated the efficacy of a commercial disinfectant against CCV using both in vitro and in vivo approaches. In vitro experiments assessed the virucidal activity of the disinfectant against CCV in channel catfish ovary (CCO) cells, while in vivo trials evaluated its effectiveness in redu

CERCARIAL LONGEVITY AND INFECTIVITY OF BOLBOPHORUS DAMNIFICUS, WITH NOTES ON METACERCARIAL PERSISTENCE AND SITE SPECIFICITY IN CHANNEL AND HYBRID CATFISH.

Advances in hybridization practices in U.S. catfish aquaculture have led to increased production of channel (Ictalurus punctatus) × blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) hybrids to capitalize on their more favorable production characteristics. However, the effects of typical channel catfish pathogens on hybrids are not well understood, including the digenean Bolbophorus damnificus, which has caused significant losses in channel catfish production. Three experiments were conducted to assess the longevity and site specificity of 2 life stages of B. damnificus impacting catfish production. The first

Molecular and morphological characterization of Dollfustrema bagarii (Digenea: Bucephalidae) metacercariae from aquaculture channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in northern Vietnam.

White grub metacercariae were found in the livers and kidneys of diseased specimens of an introduced channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), in Vietnam. Based on morphological features and 28S rDNA sequence analysis, the isolated metacercariae were identified as Dollfustrema bagarii (Digenea: Bucephalidae) Moravec & Sey. Histopathological examination shows that encysted metacercariae can change the tissue structure of the infected organs and is often accompanied by haemorrhaging and the presence of eosinophilic granular cell infiltration. Degenerative changes were also observed.

Copper ferrite nanoparticles induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in Channel catfish ovary cells.

Nanomaterials are the sixth most emerging contaminants that are entering into aquatic habitat posing a risk to the inhabiting organisms. Nanoparticles of copper ferrite have been extensively used in biomedical applications. However, very limited studies are available on the cytotoxicity evaluation of copper ferrite nanoparticles (CuFe2O4NPs) on different cell lines. The current work investigates on the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and morphological variations triggered by CuFe2O4NPs in Channel catfish ovary (CCO) cells using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide (MTT),
