OBJECTIVE: To compare causal illness beliefs between patients with unexplained physical symptoms and different comorbid disorders and to assess the association of causal illness beliefs with illness behavior.
METHODS: We examined a sample of 233 patients attending treatment in primary care. Inclusion criteria were "unexplained physical symptoms." All patients were investigated using structured interviews and self-rating scales [Screening for Somatoform Symptoms (SOMS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory, and a 12-item instrument to assess causal attributions]. BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of information regarding sexual behavior in patients with bipolar illness.
METHODS: A questionnaire regarding sexual and reproductive behavior was administered to all willing attendees of an academic bipolar clinic. Information regarding onset, maintenance, and nature of sexual behaviors, as well as marriage and children, was collected.
RESULTS: Patients with bipolar disorder have less children on average (1.6) than the U.S. general population (1.87). Patients were 3 times more likely to have planned children before diagnosis than after; however, the average num

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of parents' avoidant illness behaviors on their adult children's adjustment to arthritis.
METHODS: Men and women attending a rheumatology clinic completed arthritis health status questionnaires and described how their parents generally responded to their own minor illnesses. Some participants rated their parents as never avoiding routine activities when confronting minor illness and were assigned to the non-avoidant group. Participants in the avoidant group reported that their parents avoided routine activities in response to minor illness. Those in the mixe

OBJECTIVE: The perceived association between violent behavior and serious mental illness was explored to determine the validity of claims by mental health advocates that individuals with serious mental illness are no more dangerous than members of the general population.
METHODS: The author reviewed recent studies and media accounts of violent behavior by individuals with serious mental illness, with emphasis given to the most recent studies.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Although the vast majority of individuals with serious mental illness are not more dangerous than members of the general popul

In this paper, an overview of the literature relevant to the issues of illness behavior and help-seeking behavior in relation to mental health and illness, focusing on the Taiwan area is presented. Arguments for the prioritization and appreciation of the folk perspective of mental illness and health are addressed. The traditional medical beliefs in the Chinese culture that emphasize integration and continuity, instead of differentiation, of/between body and mind, person and nature, nature and super-nature, the visible (with form) and the invisible (without form), and yang and yin, have laid th

BACKGROUND: While gastroesophageal reflux is amenable to medical and surgical treatment, the severity of pathophysiologic changes of the disease correlates poorly with the symptomatology. Similarly, the overall successful outcome of surgical therapy can be lessened by the poor outcome in a small number of patients despite the technical success of the operation. We conducted a study to determine the influence of illness behavior on the outcome and efficacy of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication.
STUDY DESIGN: From a larger group of patients undergoing a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, 77 pa

The present study investigated illness behavior and coping strategies among young adults with panic (N = 21), with other anxiety disorders (N = 27), and without anxiety disorders (controls; N = 296). The sample represented a cross-section of 29- to 30-year-old adults from the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. Coping was defined as the ways in which subjects react to life stress. Illness behavior was defined as use of medical care and substance consumption. Subjects with panic differed significantly from subjects with other anxiety disorders and controls in their coping strategies by seeking soc

Results of recent studies have suggested that factors other than clinical signs and symptoms have a significant role in determining whether people seek treatment for perceived facial pain and mandibular dysfunction. The concept of "illness behavior" can be used to investigate this problem. Knowledge of a patient's illness behavior patterns helps enable the dentist to understand who seeks care for symptoms of facial pain and mandibular dysfunction; why the care is sought; the meaning of the symptoms to the patient; and the patient's response to treatment.

The Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF), a 25-item rating scale, was developed to identify the function(s) of maladaptive behavior in individuals with developmental disabilities. The authors adapted it for use with individuals with serious mental illness who engage in maladaptive behavior and assessed the psychometric characteristics of the new scale (Questions About Behavioral Function in Mental Illness; QABF-MI) in a sample of 135 adults with serious mental illness from three inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Staff most familiar with each person rated each item on a 5-point Likert-type

Currently, we are facing a new manifestation of functional neurological disorder presenting with functional Tourette-like behavior (FTB). This study aimed to show characteristics of this phenotype presenting as an outbreak of "mass social media-induced illness" (MSMI) and to explore predisposing factors. Between 5-9/2021, we prospectively investigated 32 patients (mean/median age: 20.1/18 years, range: 11-53 years, n = 16 females) with MSMI-FTB using a neuro-psychiatric examination, a comprehensive semi-structured interview and aspects of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostic System. Illness behavior in panic disorder was examined by comparing the coping strategies of female primary care patients (34 with panic disorder, 30 with simple panic, and 78 without panic.) Relationships of coping and distress were also examined within each group. The groups differed significantly on the Ways of Coping Checklist, anxiety (SCL-90 and Zung scales), depression (SCL-90 and Beck scales), and number of phobias. The panic disorder group used proportionately less problem-focused and more wishful thinking than the other groups. Within the panic disorder group, anxiety and depression were co

The relationship between depression, illness behavior and persistent pain was studied in 100 patients referred to the University of Washington Hospital Pain Clinic. The instruments used were the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ) and the Levine-Pilowsky Depression Questionnaire (LPD). To delineate those aspects of illness behavior characteristic of the Pain Clinic group, their scores were compared to those attained on the IBQ by a Family Medicine Clinic sample. The Pain Clinic group showed greater conviction of disease and somatic preoccupation than the comparison group. Further, they were r

This paper uses a new calendar design implemented in the Guatemalan Survey of Family Health to analyze diarrheal and respiratory illness among children. The calendar provides a much richer description of child illness and treatment behavior than do conventional data typically collected in health interview surveys. The resulting estimates reveal that Guatemalan children experience high rates of diarrheal and respiratory illness and that these illnesses often involve multiple symptoms that only partially overlap one another. In addition, estimates from the calendar demonstrate that the measureme

Behavioral psychotherapy may promote physical health and treat some behavior-linked medical conditions. Prevention of risk factors, and relapse through self-management, the development of a healthy life-style and the possibility to use its technology in the community at a relatively low cost are emphasized. Controlled studies suggest its effectiveness in cardiovascular diseases, headaches, stuttering, alcoholism, pain and bulimia nervosa. Cancer, psychoneuroimmunology and AIDS are under investigation. OBJECTIVE: In terms of restricted financial resources, the contribution of mental disorders to health care use and illness behavior is highly relevant. However, the specific contributions of panic disorder, depression, and somatic complaints to illness behavior in unselected samples is unclear.
METHODS: A representative sample of 2507 inhabitants of Germany was selected and grouped into people with panic disorder (30), somatic syndrome (102), major depression (24), depressive syndrome (77), and controls (2269). Assessment instruments were the complete version of the Patient Health Questionnai

A longitudinal study of 62 individuals with profound mental retardation was conducted to determine if direct care staff can identify behavior change prior to identifying symptoms of acute illness. Results indicate that staff were able to notice changes in sluggishness prior to the onset of illness. Self-care behavior was of borderline significance and there was no significant change in eight behavior dimensions (vocalizations, peer conflict, stereotypy, aggression, self injurious behavior, restlessness, distractibility, and depression). This finding should alert physicians and caregivers to th

Patients with serious illness coupled with a history of difficulty coping with challenging situations often exhibit behaviors consistent with emotion dysregulation and low distress tolerance. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), an evidence-based psychological treatment originally developed for patients with borderline personality disorder and now widely applied across clinical settings, offers skills-based tools to support patients navigating the intense and understandable distress that arises with illness. This article explores the care of a patient with advanced cancer who presents with sign
