Computer-assisted image interpretation: use of a neural network to differentiate tubular carcinoma from sclerosing adenosis.

Measurement of nuclear and glandular size and shape features was carried out on 18 cases of sclerosing adenosis and 18 cases of tubular carcinoma. Modified Bonferroni analysis showed that glandular surface density and the coefficient of variation of luminal form factor were significant in discriminating between these two lesions. These two histologic features, together with the diagnosis, were used to train a neural network implementing a backpropagation algorithm. Following training, the network correctly classified 33 of the 36 cases in the training set (92%). Furthermore, the network correc

Mixture-of-Experts Electroencephalography-Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Fusion for Interpretable Computer-Assisted Brain Disorder Diagnosis.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provide complementary information about brain function, and have shown significant promise in detecting functional abnormalities in various brain disorders. However, the distinct signal characteristics and disparate representational spaces of EEG and fMRI pose severe challenges to effective multimodal fusion, thereby hindering accurate computer-assisted diagnosis of brain disorders with conventional fixed models. This study presents Brain Mixture-of-Experts (BrainMoE), an adaptive and interpretable EEG-fMRI fusion fr

Computer-assisted immunohistochemical analysis of cervical cancer biomarkers using low-cost and simple software.

The study of biomarkers by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for cervical cancer and intraepithelial lesions is a promising field. However, manual interpretation of IHC and reproducibility of the scoring systems can be highly subjective. In this article, we present a novel and simple computer-assisted IHC interpretation method based on cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK) color format, for tissues with diaminobenzidine cytoplasmatic staining counterstained with methyl green. This novel method is more easily interpreted than previous computer-assisted methods based on red-green-blue (RGB) color format and

Image-guided periacetabular osteotomy: computer-assisted navigation compared with the conventional technique: a randomized study of 36 patients followed for 2 years.

BACKGROUND: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is an effective but technically demanding surgical procedure. We evaluated the efficiency of computer-assisted navigation in PAO and compared it with the traditional approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a randomized study of 36 patients undergoing PAO using either the CT-based, computer-assisted navigation technique or the conventional approach. The operative details, radiographic results, and functional outcomes were compared between groups. RESULTS: Patients in the conventional surgery group required an average of 4.4 (2-7) images of intra

Computer-assisted image analysis of preexisting histological patterns of the cephalic vein to predict wrist arteriovenous fistula non-maturation.

BACKGROUND: We used computer-assisted image analysis to determine whether preexisting histological features of the cephalic vein influence the risk of non-maturation of wrist fistulas. METHODS: This study focused on patients aged 20-80 years who underwent their first wrist fistula creation. A total of 206 patients participated, and vein samples for Masson's trichrome staining were collected from 134 patients. From these, 94 patients provided a complete girth of the venous specimen for automatic image analysis. Maturation was assessed using ultrasound within 90 days after surgery. RESULTS: Th

[Computer-assisted diagnosis in mammography: the R2 ImageChecker System in detection of spiculated lesions].

Because of the rapid development of computer systems for digitalization and image analysis, they play an increasing important role in computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD). Especially in the field of mammography, the early signs of malignancy are relatively uniform and therefore more easily detected by a computer algorithm. In this study, we tested one of the few commercially available systems for the detection of both microcalcifications and suspicious, spiculated solid lesions on 40 cases of proven breast carcinomas. These mammograms were analyzed by three independent observers with and without

Surgical Treatment for Posterior Dislocation of Hip Combined with Acetabular Fractures Using Preoperative Virtual Simulation and Three-Dimensional Printing Model-Assisted Precontoured Plate Fixation Techniques.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hip dislocation combined with acetabular fracture remains a challenging condition for orthopedic surgeons. In this study, we utilized a computer-assisted simulation and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to treat patients with hip dislocation combined with acetabular fracture. We hypothesized that the 3D printing-assisted method would shorten the internal fixation time and surgical time. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients diagnosed with traumatic posterior dislocation of hip combined with acetabular fractures and treated with plate fixation from S

Application of expert systems to mammographic image analysis.

A prototype expert system was designed for differentiation of 16 circumscribed breast abnormalities utilizing findings identified by a human observer from X-ray mammograms, clinical data, and patient history. An off-the-shelf expert system shell served as the foundation for the rule base. The system runs on standard microcomputer hardware. Preliminary results suggest the expert system may be valuable in improving the ability of relatively unskilled observers to screen X-ray mammograms. Overall, radiology residents with limited experience in mammographic image analysis obtained a diagnostic acc

ZScribbleSeg: A comprehensive segmentation framework with modeling of efficient annotation and maximization of scribble supervision.

Curating fully annotated datasets for medical image segmentation is labor-intensive and expertise-demanding. To alleviate this problem, prior studies have explored scribble annotations for weakly supervised segmentation. Existing solutions mainly compute losses on annotated areas and generate pseudo labels by propagating annotations to adjacent regions. However, these methods often suffer from inaccurate and unrealistic segmentations due to insufficient supervision and incomplete shape information. In contrast, we first investigate the principle of good scribble annotations, which leads to eff

Boundary-enhanced sparse transformer for generalizable and accurate medical image segmentation.

Medical image segmentation is a fundamental task in computer-aided diagnosis, playing a crucial role in organ structure analysis, lesion delineation, and treatment planning. However, current Transformer-based segmentation networks still face two major challenges. First, the global self-attention in the encoder often introduces redundant connections, leading to high computational cost and potential interference from irrelevant tokens. Second, the decoder shows limited capability in reconstructing fine-grained boundary structures, resulting in blurred segmentation contours. To address these issu

Edge-Aware Diffusion Segmentation Model With Hessian Priors for Automated Diaphragm Thickness Measurement in Ultrasound Imaging.

The thickness of the diaphragm serves as a crucial biometric indicator, particularly in assessing rehabilitation and respiratory dysfunction. However, measuring diaphragm thickness from ultrasound images mainly depends on manual delineation of the fascia, which is subjective, time-consuming, and sensitive to the inherent speckle noise. In this study, we introduce an edge-aware diffusion segmentation model (ESADiff), which incorporates prior structural knowledge of the fascia to improve the accuracy and reliability of diaphragm thickness measurements in ultrasound imaging. We first apply a diff

Multi-Granularity Topological Reasoning for Anatomically Consistent Vasculature Parsing.

Quantitative analysis of retinal vascular morphology is vital for clinical decision-making and the investigation of systemic diseases. Central to this process is the accurate segmentation of retinal arteries and veins (A/V) from the background, a task challenged by substantial variations in vessel calibers and the presence of low-contrast or ambiguous structures in fundus images, especially in ultra-wide field imaging where peripheral distortions and large-scale anatomical variability are pronounced. These factors often lead to fragmented semantic representations and topological inconsistencie

Rethinking Propagation Methods for Interactive Medical Image Segmentation.

Propagation-based methods have drawn increasing research attention in interactive medical image segmentation. However, existing propagation-based methods face two significant challenges: 1) Due tothe continuous nature of anatomical structures within the organs and tumors throughout the volume, over-propagation is likely to occur as the propagation process reaches the end of structures, leadingto a degradation in segmentation performance. 2) During the multi-round refinement process, selecting the worst-segmented slice for refinement tends to hinder the optimization of segmentation results. A Systematic Review: The Application of Attention Mechanisms in Medical Ultrasound Image Processing.

Among numerous medical imaging modalities, ultrasound imaging is one of the most commonly used diagnostic methods in clinical practice. However, ultrasound diagnosis heavily relies on physician experience, and diagnostic results often lack reproducibility. In recent years, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, which provides new impetus for the automated medical ultrasound image processing and analysis. Among the numerous deep learning approaches proposed, attention mechanisms have become a key component for improving network robustness to cope with challenges in ul

Prior-guided attention fusion transformer for multi-lesion segmentation of diabetic retinopathy.

To solve the issue of diagnosis accuracy of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and reduce the workload of ophthalmologists, in this paper we propose a prior-guided attention fusion Transformer for multi-lesion segmentation of DR. An attention fusion module is proposed to improve the key generator to integrate self-attention and cross-attention and reduce the introduction of noise. The self-attention focuses on lesions themselves, capturing the correlation of lesions at a global scale, while the cross-attention, using pre-trained vessel masks as prior knowledge, utilizes the correlation between lesions

Token-based fidelity scoring for trustworthy vision transformer interpretations in medical imaging.

PURPOSE: This work addresses the problem that interpretability methods for medical imaging models are still mostly evaluated by agreement with human annotations, even though such agreement does not necessarily indicate that an explanation is faithful to the model's actual decision-making. The goal is to quantify fidelity, defined here as the extent to which an explanation reflects the evidence that truly drives model predictions, independent of human intuition, bias, or incomplete annotation. METHODS: We propose a prediction confidence-based approach to estimate token importance in vision tra

PASAformer: Cerebrovascular Disease Classification With Medical Prior-Guided Adapter and Pathology-Aware Sparse Attention.

Cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs) such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stenosis, and Moyamoya disease are major public health concerns. Accurate classification of these conditions is essential for timely intervention, yet current computer-aided methods often exhibit limited representational capacity, feature redundancy, and insufficient interpretability, restricting clinical applicability. We propose PASAformer, a Swin-Transformer-based framework for cerebrovascular disease classification on DSA. PASAformer incorporates a Pathology-Aware Sparse Attention (PASA) module that emphasizes
