Rorschach cards were administered to psychotherapy patients under two conditions. In the imagery condition, cards were presented to each subject briefly, following which the cards were visualized with eyes closed and any visual imagery sequences were reported. This procedure was preceded by a standard Rorschach administration. Subjects were classified into Imagery Reactor and Nonreactor groups, according to the degree to which they responded to the instructions. The examples presented illustrate the qualitative differences in conflictual and affect-laden material between Reactors and Nonreacto

There is an unmet need for effective short-term therapeutic techniques to reduce clinical symptoms associated with prospective-, as well as retrospective aversive mental images across mental disorders. We investigated the efficacy of imagery rescripting (IR) as a short-term intervention across clinical disorders, as the literature suggests that this technique could be a promising intervention to reduce psychopathology by altering intrusive mental images. A systematic literature review identified 23 trials including 805 adult patients, out of which 15 trials were designed as randomized controll

THE ROLE OF IMAGERY REHEARSAL THERAPY. Post -traumatic stress disorder develops in 30% of adults exposed to a traumatic event. In these patients, sleep disturbances are the earliest and most persistent symptoms, but they remain relatively unresponsive to the usual treatments used in post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic nightmares are relivings of the traumatic event and a source of significant emotional distress. They concern over 70% of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. Imagery rehearsal therapy is the recommended first-line treatment for post-traumatic nightmares. This

Rumination is associated with increased risk for depression whereas distraction helps draw attention away from negative experiences, lowering risk. Many individuals who ruminate do so in the form of mental imagery and imagery-based rumination is more highly associated with depressive symptom severity than ruminating in the form of verbal thoughts. We do not yet understand why imagery-based rumination may be especially problematic nor how to intervene to reduce imagery-based rumination, however. Adolescents (N = 145) underwent a negative mood induction followed by experimental induction of rumi

This paper provides a conceptual framework for the study and clinical application of hypnotherapeutic imagery (HTI). Using the grounded theory method of conceptual analysis, a unified theoretical framework is constructed from a multidisciplinary review of literature (i.e., this new theory is based on the collection and analysis of independently sourced data). The aim is to enumerate the chorographical features of HTI simulations within the mental landscape, rather than seeking to predict them. This is achieved using a combination of ontological, epistemological, and methodological inquires. Be

CONTEXT: Vestibular disorders significantly impact people's quality of life, affecting functions such as balance and walking. Current treatments involve pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, with vestibular rehabilitation proving effective in helping to compensate for deficits. Although traditional techniques address various aspects of the vestibular system, many fundamental studies suggest motor imagery could reduce vestibular impairment. Despite the paucity of research on motor imagery for vestibular disorder rehabilitation, recent expert recommendations suggest it could enhanc

Motor execution, observation, and imagery are important skills used in motor learning and rehabilitation. The neural mechanisms underlying these cognitive-motor processes are still poorly understood. We used a simultaneous recording of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the differences in neural activity across three conditions requiring these processes. Additionally, we used a new method called structured sparse multiset Canonical Correlation Analysis (ssmCCA) to fuse the fNIRS and EEG data and determine the brain regions of neural activi

Bodily awareness is informed by both sensory data and prior knowledge. Although misleading sensory signals have been repeatedly shown to affect bodily awareness, only scant attention has been given to the influence of cognitive variables. Hypnotic suggestion has recently been shown to impact visuospatial and sensorimotor representations of body-part size although the mechanisms subserving this effect are yet to be identified. Mental imagery might play a causal or facilitative role in this effect, as it has been shown to influence body awareness in previous studies. Nonetheless, current views a

This consensus paper provides an overview of the state of the art in research on the aetiology and treatment of nightmare disorder and outlines further perspectives on these issues. It presents a definition of nightmares and nightmare disorder followed by epidemiological findings, and then explains existing models of nightmare aetiology in traumatized and non-traumatized individuals. Chronic nightmares develop through the interaction of elevated hyperarousal and impaired fear extinction. This interplay is assumed to be facilitated by trait affect distress elicited by traumatic experiences, ear

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain has been associated with disrupted sensorimotor integration and altered internal body representations. While implicit motor imagery (MI) has been explored in pain populations, explicit MI, defined as the deliberate mental simulation of movement, remains less well understood.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine differences in explicit MI ability, vividness, and mental chronometry between individuals with chronic pain and healthy controls.
METHODS: We screened six databases for observational studies comparing explicit MI outcomes in chr

OBJECTIVE: Intrusive thoughts are characterized by a sense of intrusiveness of foreign entry into cognition. While not always consisting of negative content, intrusive thoughts are almost solely investigated in that context. Involuntary Musical Imagery (INMI) offers a promising alternative, as it is a type of involuntary cognition that can be used to evaluate intrusiveness without negative content.
METHODS: In Study 1, 200 participants completed self-report questionnaires to assess several aspects of intrusiveness: meta-awareness, control, repetitiveness, frequency, and subjective experience

Nightmares are highly prevalent in the general population (2-8%) and are associated with mental problems. As a result, nightmares are likely to be more prevalent among patients in secondary mental healthcare. They can be treated with 'imagery rehearsal therapy' (IRT). With IRT the scenario of a recurring nightmare is changed, after which the 'new dream' is imagined several times a day.
AIM: To assess the prevalence of nightmares and their associated problems in secondary mental healthcare and to find out whether IRT is also effective in patients with diverse mental disorders.
METHO

Prior research has shown that Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with significantly diminished positive affect (PA). Few studies have examined PA reactivity to pleasant experimental stimuli in individuals with SAD and whether emotional responses might be moderated by social context. Here, we investigated repeated measures of PA reactivity among individuals with SAD (n = 46) and healthy controls (HC; n = 39) in response to standardized neutral images, pleasant music, and social versus nonsocial guided imagery. Primary analyses revealed that SAD and HC participants did not differ in the

Background: There is an urgent need to systematically analyze the growing body of literature on the effect of motor imagery (MI) training in children and adolescents. Methods: Seven databases and clinicaltrials.gov were searched. Two reviewers independently screened references and full texts, and extracted data (studies' methodology, MI elements, temporal parameters). Two studies were meta-analyzed providing the standard mean difference (SDM). Selected studies were evaluated with the risk of bias (RoB) and GRADE tools. Results: A total of 7238 references were retrieved. The sample size of the

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models of Social Anxiety Disorder suggest that negative self-images maintain social fears despite repeated exposure to benign social situations. An accumulating body of evidence supports this notion, and preliminary data indicate that modifying self-imagery can potentially reduce fears of negative evaluation in socially anxious individuals. This systematic review aims to evaluate the existing research on the effect of self-imagery on symptoms and processes in social anxiety.
METHODS: The following databases were searched: PsycInfo, Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Central R
