The Imaginer And the Imagined.

A transference of the imaginer and the imagined, arising from largely unconscious fantasies of the way parent and child interact to construct a view of reality, is present in all analyses. For narcissistic patients, primitive fantasies of the imaginer and imagined form an enduring organization, and the enactment of these fantasies in transference and countertransference distorts the way analyst and patient construct meaning. Clinical material demonstrates the deepening that occurs when these fantasies are interpreted.

Playing with "The Imaginer and the Imagined".

This article examines Lucy LaFarge's "The Imaginer and the Imagined" through the lens of Winnicottian play. LaFarge's detailed clinical material shows how primitive fantasies about communication-beliefs that minds can omnipotently control or annihilate one another-become part of the analytic field and can get enacted bidirectionally to produce stalemates in the analytic process. This commentary compares Ms. O's adult analysis to a child case in which imaginative play opened access to fears of dependency and aggression. It underscores play's paradoxical, transitional quality as a therapeutic me

Responsibility and evil imagination.

In this Niebuhrian perspective on hostile and violent discourse the author utilizes H. R. Niebuhr's fourfold notion of responsibility and his concept of evil imagination to examine relations marred by protracted hostility toward hated "other" or "others." The author argues that violent and hostile discourse manifests a particular form of responsibility whereby persons expressing hostility toward hated "others" construct, by way of negative representations, maligned histories and identities for the "other" and at the same time construct an idealized or glorified history and identity for themsel

Presidential address: imagination trumps knowledge.

Multiple organ failure (MOF) emerged 30 years ago and became our research focus. Over the years, we have proposed a series of cartoons that rallied multidisciplinary translational research teams around common themes to generate "win-win" hypotheses that when tested (right or wrong) have advanced our understanding of MOF. MOF has a bimodal trajectory, and the gut plays a role in both trajectories. Early MOF occurs because of excessive proinflammation (ie, systemic inflammatory response syndrome [SIRS]), and early gut ischemia-reperfusion can amplify SIRS and contribute to the early fulminant SI

Attenuating Neural Threat Expression with Imagination.

Imagination is an internal simulation of real-life events and a common treatment tool for anxiety disorders; however, the neural processes by which imagination exerts behavioral control are unclear. This investigation tests whether and how imagined exposures to a threatening stimulus, conditioned in the real world, influence neural and physiological manifestations of threat. We found that imagined and real extinction are equally effective in the reduction of threat-related neural patterns and physiological responses elicited upon re-exposure to real-world threatening cues. [A phenomenological approach to psychopathology of imagination: Development of a descriptive instrument - Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination].

This paper is a French translation of the Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination (EAFI), an instrument for a semi-structured, phenomenological exploration of psychopathology of imagination, particularly within the schizophrenia-spectrum. In this paper, we provide a French translation of the EAFI together with an introduction about the phenomenology of imagination and its experiential alterations. Furthermore, the paper includes a study of the interrater reliability of the EAFI, which was examined in a diagnostically heterogeneous sample of 20 inpatients. The interrater agreement rang

A Phenomenological Approach to Psychopathology of Imagination: Development of a Descriptive Instrument - Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination.

This paper serves as an introduction to the Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination (EAFI) - a novel instrument for a semistructured, phenomenological exploration of psychopathology of imagination. We present an account of the phenomenology of imagination and proceed to a presentation of the disorders of imagination that are addressed in the EAFI. Furthermore, the interrater reliability of the EAFI was examined in a diagnostically heterogeneous sample of 20 in-patients. The interrater agreement ranged from 0.6 to 1.0, with an average κ of 0.84. The internal consistency of the EAFI as

Imagination and dissociation in hypnotic responding.

A neodissociative model of mind is better equipped than a social-psychological model to deal with the complexities of hypnosis, and of human behavior generally. It recognizes, as Coe's (1992) model does not, that behavior can be more automatically activated than strategically enacted. In particular, Coe's emphasis on human behavior as purposeful and goal directed does not distinguish between goal-directed behavior that serves a purpose, and goal-directed behavior that is performed on purpose. It is this distinction that permits goal-directed behavior to be dissociated from a person's conscious

Astrocytes Imagined.

The cellular, molecular and physiological basis of cognition has proved elusive until emerging studies on astrocytes. The appearance of a deliberate aggregating element in cellular neurophysiology was difficult to satisfy computationally with excitatory and inhibitory neuron physiology alone. Similarly, the complex behavioral outputs of cognition are challenging to test experimentally. Astrocytic reception and control of synaptic communication has provided the possibility for study of the missing element. The advancement of genetic and neurophysiological techniques have now demonstrated astroc

EAFI: Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination.

The Examination of Anomalous Fantasy and Imagination (EAFI) is an instrument for a semistructured, phenomenological exploration of psychopathology of imagination. The EAFI provides a conceptual-descriptive framework to address such experiences. It consists of 16 main items, sometimes divided into subtypes. We suggest that the anomalies of imagination explored by the EAFI reflect an alteration in the structure of consciousness and belong to a fundamental, generative layer of psychopathology with relevance to differential diagnostic purposes.

Unconscious Imagination and the Mental Imagery Debate.

Traditionally, philosophers have appealed to the phenomenological similarity between visual experience and visual imagery to support the hypothesis that there is significant overlap between the perceptual and imaginative domains. The current evidence, however, is inconclusive: while evidence from transcranial brain stimulation seems to support this conclusion, neurophysiological evidence from brain lesion studies (e.g., from patients with brain lesions resulting in a loss of mental imagery but not a corresponding loss of perception and vice versa) indicates that there are functional and anatom

A neural basis for distinguishing imagination from reality.

Humans are able to imagine scenarios that are decoupled from the current environment by internally activating perceptual representations. Although an efficient re-use of existing resources, it remains unknown how human observers classify perceptual signals as reflecting external reality, as opposed to internal simulation or imagination. Here, we show that judgments of reality are underpinned by the combined strength of sensory activity generated by either imagery or perception in the fusiform gyrus. Activity fluctuations in this region predict confusions between imagery and perception on a tri

Re-Imagining Fibromyalgia.

The current scientific knowledge of Fibromyalgia is too focused on deficits. Therefore, the prognosis of Fibromyalgia is grim. This Commentary provides the lived experience of a person navigating the healing process with Fibromyalgia. With no remedy to fix the condition, those with the diagnosis must find better ways to live with it. This Commentary provides 4 helpful tips: 1) Utilize the research; 2) Get to a safe space; 3) Balance the mental and physical aspects, and; 4) Look for unexpected insights of the diagnosis. While this lived experience is not generalizable, it illustrates the need f

Defining imagination: a conceptual mapping and provisional model.

INTRODUCTION: Imagination is a central feature of human thought, yet it remains poorly defined and inconsistently conceptualized across disciplines, limiting cumulative progress in research. This paper proposes a provisional conceptual model of imagination aimed at organizing existing terminology and clarifying imagination's structure and role in human cognition. METHODS: Using a conceptual review approach, the authors synthesize literature from psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and related fields, focusing on work that defines, measures, or models imagination. Neuronal activation patterns during self-referential pain imagination.

In clinical assessments and pain therapy, patients are asked to imagine themselves in pain. However, the underlying neuronal processes remain poorly understood. Prior research has focused on empathy for pain or reported small sample sizes. Thus, the present study aimed to promote the neurobiological understanding of self-referential pain imagination. We hypothesised to find activation contrasts (pain vs. no pain) across pain-related areas and expected two of the most prominent predictors of chronic pain, pain sensitivity (PS) and locus of control (LoC), to be moderators. In an fMRI study, N =
