[The loss of human autonomy: utilization and imitative behaviors].

In 1981, when François Lhermitte described utilisation behaviour, his experience was based on 40 patients with bilateral frontal lesions and 5 cases of unilateral lesions. This behaviour was never observed in normal subjects or in patients whose lesions spared the frontal lobes. The description of imitation behaviour followed shortly after. In 1986, of the 125 patients studied, 40 presented an imitation behaviour without utilisation behaviour, 35 had both types of abnormal behaviour and 50 had neither. Continuing his study of patients presenting a frontal syndrome, Lhermitte showed that depend

[Utilization and imitation behavior following right parietotemporal lesions].

A 65 year-old man showed bilateral, but more marked on the right, instinctive grasp reaction, utilization and imitation behavior after a right parietotemporal lobe infarction. Attention disturbance, left unilateral spatial neglect, and constructional disturbance were also observed. Fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI revealed high intensity lesions over the right parietotemporal cortex and white matter. Magnetic resonance angiography showed occlusion of the right internal carotid artery, and ultrasonography revealed left moderate internal carotid artery stenosis. Utilization and im

[A study of utilization and imitation behavior in cases with striatocapsular infarction].

Utilization behavior (UB) and imitation behavior (IB) were first described by Lhermitte (1983; 1986) for neurobehavioral disorders due to the frontal lobe damage. Recently, the similar symptoms were also observed in several reports of subcortical lesion cases without any lesion of the frontal lobe. We studied 16 consecutive patients with unilateral striatocapsular infarction (SCI), and found 7 patients (44%) presenting UB and/or IB. Characteristics of patients with UB and/or IB revealed the following factors: older age, higher frequency of right-sided lesion, absence of severe aphasia or aprax

Tics as a model of over-learned behavior-imitation and inhibition of facial tics.

BACKGROUND: Tics are the defining feature in Tourette syndrome and can be triggered by watching tics or single voluntary movements. This automatic imitation of movements referred to as "echopraxia" has been ascribed to a failure in top-down inhibition of imitative response tendencies. Alternatively, it could be interpreted in the context of automatic overlearned behavior. To this end, we investigated 18 Tourette patients aged 28.22 years (9.44 standard deviation; 16 male) and 24 healthy controls (mean age 29.21 years [9.1 standard deviation]; 17 male) using an adapted version of an action-inte

Imitation in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome--a behavioral study.

Echophenomena in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) may relate to deficient processing of observed biological movements. This would be reflected in altered effects of movement observation on motor responses in these patients. We studied reaction times in 11 unmedicated GTS patients without psychiatric comorbidity and healthy subjects. In experiment 1, participants imitated single biological finger movement stimuli or nonbiological dot movement stimuli immediately. In experiment 2, participants responded to a tone while viewing biological or nonbiological movement stimuli that were either com

Imitative and contagious behaviors in animals and their potential roles in the study of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Social learning in the forms of imitative and contagious behaviors are essential for learning abilities and social interaction. However, children with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities show impairments in these behaviors, which profoundly affect their communication skills and cognitive functions. Although these deficits are well studied in humans, pre-clinical animal model assessments of imitative and contagious behavioral deficits are limited. Here, we first define various forms of social learning as well as their developmental and evolutionary significance in humans.

Automatic imitation in youngsters with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: A behavioral study.

It is widely known that humans have a tendency to imitate each other and that appropriate modulation of automatic imitative behaviors has a crucial function in social interactions. Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and phonic tics. Apart from tics, patients with GTS are often reported to show an abnormal tendency to automatically imitate others' behaviors (i.e., echophenomena), which may be related to a failure in top-down inhibition of imitative response tendencies. The aim of the current study is to explore the top-down

Simulated paraphilias: a preliminary study of patients who imitate or exaggerate paraphilic symptoms and behaviors.

In a consecutive series of admissions to the Johns Hopkins Sexual Disorders Unit, 4 out of 20 patients appeared to have simulated paraphilic symptoms that further assessment indicated were either exaggerated or not present. The paper presents case histories of these 4 patients. A descriptive comparison is made between these patients and control groups of patients who admitted having paraphilic symptoms and a group of patients accused of having paraphilic symptoms but who denied them. Patients who simulated paraphilias tended to be self-referred (75%) and without current legal charges (100%). N

Imitation-based evolutionary dynamics of behavioral decisions between health-conscious and health-unconscious strategies.

During a pandemic, many people face confusion and struggle to decide the most appropriate action to protect themselves by choosing between health-conscious and health-unconscious strategies. This decision is influenced by two main factors: the spread of infection within the population and the perceived benefits or risks of contracting the infection. To remove this confusion, development of an epidemic model with the dynamics of individuals' decision-making processes to investigate how individuals choose the strategies is important. In this study, we introduce an epidemic model in which suscept

Early imitation predicts adaptive behavior at school age: A longitudinal population-based cohort study.

AIM: Imitation provides a foundation for acquiring a wide range of knowledge and skills; accordingly, early imitation may contribute to the development of later adaptive behavior encompassing conceptual, practical, and social skills. The present study examined whether imitation at 14 months predicts adaptive behavior at 8 years of age in a general population sample. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study), a prospective birth cohort of children in Japan (n = 724). Adaptive behavior at 8 years of age was assessed using the Vineland Adaptiv

Behavioral treatment of children with phonological disorder: the efficacy of vocal imitation and sufficient-response-exemplar training.

This study examined whether sufficient-response-exemplar training of vocal imitation would result in improved articulation in children with phonological disorder, and whether improved articulation established in the context of vocal imitation would transfer to other verbal classes such as object naming and conversational speech. Participant 1 was 6 years old and attended first grade in a regular public school. Participant 2 was 5 years 4 months old and attended a public kindergarten. Both participants had normal hearing and no additional handicaps. A multiple baseline design across behaviors (

Voluntary imitation of dynamic facial expressions in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a facial-behavior analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The difficulties involved in social interaction among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown in many studies. Based on the knowledge that the imitation of facial expressions is a key factor in social interaction and functionality, the focus of prior studies has been on the evaluation of facial expressions in individuals with ADHD. However, little is known about voluntary facial mimicry in individuals with ADHD. In this context, we aimed to evaluate the voluntary-facial-imitation intensity of dynamic facial expressions in children with ADHD. ME

Behavioral imitation with artificial neural networks leads to personalized models of brain dynamics during videogame play.

Videogames provide a promising framework to understand brain activity in a rich, engaging, and active environment, in contrast to mostly passive tasks currently dominating the field, such as image viewing. Analyzing videogames neuroimaging data is, however, challenging, and relies on time-intensive manual annotations of game events, based on somewhat arbitrary rules. Here, we introduce an innovative approach using Artificial Neural networks (ANN) and brain encoding techniques to generate activation maps associated with videogame behavior using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Inhibitory Theta Burst Stimulation Highlights the Role of Left aIPS and Right TPJ during Complementary and Imitative Human-Avatar Interactions in Cooperative and Competitive Scenarios.

Competitive and cooperative interactions are based on anticipation or synchronization with the partner's actions. Both forms of interaction may either require performing imitative or complementary movements with respect to those performed by our partner. We explored how parietal regions involved in the control of imitative behavior (temporo-parietal junction, TPJ), goal coding and visuo-motor integration (anterior intraparietal sulcus, aIPS) contribute to the execution of imitative and complementary movements during cooperative and competitive interactions. To this aim, we delivered off-line n

Little evidence for cultural differences in automatic imitation.

Individuals tend to automatically imitate others' actions. Such imitative behavior is often assumed to be a universal phenomenon. However, most prior research has focused on Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations, leaving open whether people across different cultures imitate others in a similar manner. Ideomotor theory and the theory of objective self-awareness suggest that imitation is influenced by the extent to which individuals focus on the self versus others. Since cultural background strongly shapes self-construal-particularly along the collectivism-i

Birdsong and singing behavior.

Birdsong provides neuroscientists with a uniquely powerful model for studying imitative vocal learning in a system where the brain structures responsible for song learning and production are well known. The 4,500+ species of songbirds provide a remarkable diversity of songs with a variety of tonal, structural, and learning characteristics, but most studies of the neural bases of learning have concentrated on two domesticated species, the canary and the zebra finch. Important differences in the songs of these two species provide useful properties for comparative studies, which could be expanded

Evidence for a dual-process account of over-imitation: Children imitate anti- and prosocial models equally, but prefer prosocial models once they become aware of multiple solutions to a task.

Children imitate actions that are perceivably unnecessary to achieve the instrumental goal of an action sequence, a behavior termed over-imitation. It is debated whether this behavior is based on the motivation to follow behavioral norms and affiliate with the model or whether it can be interpreted in terms of a behavioral heuristic to copy observed intentional actions without questioning the purpose of each action step. To resolve this question, we tested whether preschool-aged children (N = 89) over-imitate a prosocial model, a helper in a prior third-party moral transgression, but refuse to

Imitation: definitions, evidence, and mechanisms.

Imitation can be defined as the copying of behavior. To a biologist, interest in imitation is focused on its adaptive value for the survival of the organism, but to a psychologist, the mechanisms responsible for imitation are the most interesting. For psychologists, the most important cases of imitation are those that involve demonstrated behavior that the imitator cannot see when it performs the behavior (e.g., scratching one's head). Such examples of imitation are sometimes referred to as opaque imitation because they are difficult to account for without positing cognitive mechanisms, such a

The mouse model of fragile X syndrome exhibits deficits in contagious itch behavior.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) imitate observed behavior less than age-matched and typically developing peers, resulting in deterred learning ability and social interaction. However, this deficit lacks preclinical assessment tools. A previous study has shown that mice exhibit contagious itch behavior while viewing a scratching demonstrator mouse, as opposed to an ambulating demonstrator mouse, but whether autism mouse models imitate observed scratching behavior remains unknown. Here, we investigated contagious itch behavior in the mouse model of fragile X syndrome (FXS), a c
