BACKGROUND: Peri-traumatic tonic immobility has been associated with the development and course of post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite serving as an adaptive late-stage defense response, tonic immobility that continues in response to post-traumatic reminders may lead to reduced functioning and a diminished sense of well-being. At present, no validated self-report measures assess post-traumatic tonic immobility responses specifically.
METHODS: The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the Scale for Tonic immobility Occurring Post-trauma (STOP), the first self-report measur

The dorsal immobility response (DIR) and the tonic immobility response (TIR) are cutaneo-motor reflexes typically triggered when a prey is seized. The neurochemical basis of the DIR appears to pass through the basal ganglia via dopaminergic fibers, while the neurochemical basis of the TIR appears to include a circuit comprising the amygdala, the periaqueductal gray (PAG), the dorsal raphe, and the nucleus magnus raphe (NMR) via glutamatergic, serotonergic, cholinergic, GABAergic, and opioid fibers. For the DIR, the basal ganglia also seem to be involved in regard to estradiol, while for the TI

BACKGROUND: Tonic immobility (TI) is a state of physical immobility associated with extreme stress and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unknown whether TI is associated with a distinct actual stress response, i.e., objective immobility measured by a stabilometric platform. This study made a first step in exploring this as well as differences in body sway responses between PTSD patients and healthy controls. We hypothesized that PTSD would be related to increased body sway under stress, whereas TI would be related to decreased body sway under stress.

In this conclusive chapter, we review findings giving support to the hypothesis that TI represents an adaptive, survival response to threatening situations. In models of prey-predator interactions, in vertebrates and invertebrates, there are evidence that immobility per se contributes to survival, as the predator loses interest for a prey in which TI is experimentally induced. TI duration is also reciprocally modulated by the evaluation of the risk factors in the environment, and by the opportunity to reach a safe refuge. This supports the adaptive value of TI and suggests that, during TI, the

Among defensive behaviors, tonic immobility (TI) is considered the last defensive resort when life is at extreme risk. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the main psychiatric consequence resulting from exposure to traumatic events. Increasing evidence indicate an association between peritraumatic tonic immobilility and severity of PTSD. Cardiac defense response, a reactivity to perceived danger or threat, has been studied by recording heart rate changes that follows the presentation of an unpredictable intense auditory aversive stimulus. The aim of this study was to investigate potential

Animal models of autonomic correlates of defense behavior range from fish to mammals. There is however no study reporting heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure and body temperature simultaneously recorded in the same animal in association to different forms of immobility in response to threat: freezing, restraint-sustained immobility and tonic immobility (TI). In a prey/ predator context freezing behavior is associated with bradycardia and no change in blood pressure but in other conditions (e.g., extreme stressful stimuli) may be associated with tachycardia and hypertension. Restraint-su

Tonic Immobility (TI) is a prolonged immobile condition exhibited by a variety of animals when exposed to certain stimuli, and is thought to be associated with a specific state of arousal. In our study, we characterize this state by using the reliably inducible TI state of the grasshopper (Hieroglyphus banian) and by monitoring abdominal pulsations and body movements in response to visual and auditory stimuli. These pulsations are present during the TI and 'awake', standing states, but not in the CO2 anesthetized state. In response to the stimuli, animals exhibited a suppression in pulsation a

There is widespread scientific evidence that validates tonic immobility (TI) as part of the trauma response in victims of rape, and criminal justice practitioners are increasingly trained in trauma-informed approaches. Yet, legal and policy definitions of consent do not fully recognize TI during the incident as evidence of nonconsent. Using a systematic review of U.S. law and policy regarding sexual violence and consent, this paper analyzes the substantial legal reform of rape law and definitions of consent, suggesting ways to further integrate TI into existing law and legal practices to impro

BACKGROUND: One priority for animal welfare is for animals to experience less fear, especially during human contact. For domestic animals, breeds that are less fearful may provide genetic resources to develop strains with improved welfare due to lower susceptibility to fear. Genetic predispositions inherited in these breeds might reflect the large diversity of chicken breeds. The goal of the present study was to systematically test a diverse group of chicken breeds to search for breeds that experience less fear.
METHODS: Nineteen chicken breeds from commercial hybrid lines, native layer-type,

Serotonin, acetylcholine and GABA are the neuromediators most involved in tonic immobility (TI). TI duration, in fact, decreases in rabbits following systemic serotonin administration and in guinea pigs following serotonin microinjection administration into the amygdala owing to the activation of fear-related GABAergic inhibitory mechanisms. On the other hand, repeated TI inductions in rabbits and guinea pigs reduce brain serotonin turnover in several brain areas. Microinjections of the acetylcholine agonist carbachol into amygdala, hypothalamus and PAG increase TI duration and reduces other d

Fear is a critical welfare concern in laying hens. Fearful behaviors in domestic chickens are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, contributing to individual differences in stress responses. Tonic immobility (TI) duration is widely recognized as a reliable indicator of fear levels. The hippocampus, a critical brain region for emotional states, plays a pivotal role in associating fearful experiences with specific stimuli, enabling adaptive behavioral responses. This study investigated hippocampal histological characteristics and transcriptomic profiles in laying hens with diffe

Effective methods of anesthesia for octopuses are essential to physiological studies as well as for their welfare in scientific research. However, commonly used forms of general anesthesia using ethanol, magnesium chloride, and similar agents have certain drawbacks. While these methods effectively induce still states in the octopus, they also affect the peripheral body and nervous system and are therefore less than optimal for studying local behavior in octopus arms and suckers. Further, stupefying effects outlast the anesthetized state. We explore an old, rarely used method of octopus 'hypnos

INTRODUCTION: Tonic immobility (TI) is fear-induced freezing that animals may undergo when confronted by a threat. It is principally observed in prey species as defence mechanisms. In our preliminary research, we detected large inter-individual variations in the frequency and duration of freezing behavior among newly hatched domestic chicks (Gallus gallus). In this study we aim to identify the copy number variations (CNVs) in the genome of chicks as genetic candidates that underlie the behavioral plasticity to fearful stimuli.
METHODS: A total of 110 domestic chicks were used for an associati

Innate fear responses to tonic immobility (TI) and open field (OF) were evaluated in newly hatched chicks of three breeds with distinct breed origin and genetic relationships. The breeds studied were Nagoya (NAG), a native Japanese breed; White Leghorn (WL), a representative of layers; and White Plymouth Rock (WPR), a parental breed of common broilers. The TI test revealed that WL was the most sensitive to extensive fear evoked by the TI test among the three breeds, followed in order by WPR, and NAG. In contrast, the OF test revealed that NAG was the most sensitive to mild fear evoked by the O

Adaptations to captivity that reduce fitness are one of many reasons, which explain the low success rate of reintroductions. One way of testing this hypothesis is to compare an important behavioural response in captive and wild members of the same species. Thanatosis, is an anti-predator strategy that reduces the risk of death from predation, which is a common behavioral response in frogs. The study subjects for this investigation were captive and wild populations of Mantella aurantiaca. Thanatosis reaction was measured using the Tonic Immobility (TI) test, a method that consists of placing a

Experiments were conducted with the aim of determining the influence of melatonin administration on vigilance and tonic immobility (TI) responses of Marshall broiler chickens. The broiler chickens were reared on different lighting regimens and subjected to heat stress during the hot-dry season. Simple random sampling was used to assign 300 broiler chicks into three groups, comprising 100 broiler chicks each. Group I (12D:12L cycle) was raised under natural photoperiod of 12-h light and 12-h darkness, without melatonin supplementation. Group II (CL) was kept under 24-h continuous lighting, with

Tonic immobility (TI), also known as death feigning or animal hypnosis, is a reversible state of motor inhibition that is triggered by postural inversion and/or movement restraining maneuvers but also by repetitive stimulation and pressure on body parts. Our previous studies demonstrated that cholinergic stimulation of the central amygdala (CEA) decreases the duration of TI in guinea pigs. Some reports have demonstrated that electrical or chemical stimulation of the CEA promotes antinociception. Evidence suggests that the CEA performs part of its functions by means of a connection with the ven

Broilers of the same genetic origin were classified as short or long tonic immobility duration (STI and LTI, respectively) phenotypes and treated chronically with vehicle (control) or corticosterone (CORT) dissolved in drinking water between 27 and 42 d of age. Differential expression of proteins and mRNA was examined using 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis and real-time PCR to elucidate the mechanism behind the severe retardation of broiler breast muscle growth caused by LTI and CORT. The majority of the 13 proteins found to be differentially expressed in breast muscle of STI and LTI broilers

Tonic immobility is an involuntary, last-ditch defensive reaction characterized by physical inactivity in a context of inescapable threat that has been described in many species, including humans. The occurrence of this defensive response is a predictor of the severity of psychiatric disorders and may be considered as an index of an intense reaction to a traumatic event. Here, we investigated whether the retrospective reports of peritraumatic tonic immobility reaction in participants exposed to a traumatic event would modify their cardiac responses to pictures related to their trauma. Using a
