Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) (formerly feline T-lymphotropic lentivirus or FTLV) was first isolated from a group of cats in Petaluma, California in 1986. The virus is a typical lentivirus in gross and structural morphology. It replicates preferentially but not exclusively in feline T-lymphoblastoid cells, where it causes a characteristic cytopathic effect. The major structural proteins are 10, 17 (small gag), 28 (major core), 31 (endonuclease?), 41 (transmembrane?), 52 (core precursor polyprotein), 54/62 (reverse transcriptase?), and 110/130 (major envelope) kilodaltons in size. The var

Lymphoma was diagnosed in a 7-year-old domestic cat found to be infected with FeLV and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The cat was affected by chronic disorders suggestive of immunosuppression, including gingivitis, periodontitis, keratitis, and abscesses. Despite treatment, peripheral keratitis of the left eye progressed, resulting in uveitis, chronic glaucoma, and eventual corneal rupture. Microscopic retinal and optic disk pathologic processes also were suspected. Abnormal jaw movements that were believed to be indicative of neurologic disease were observed. Approximately 17 months lat

Studies were done on 53 cats with community-acquired infection with the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) to determine if hematologic abnormalities were comparable with those observed in patients seropositive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Nine cats were asymptomatic, 24 had clinical symptoms equivalent to AIDS-related complex (ARC), and 20 had AIDS-like disease. Hematologic abnormalities were detected in 75% (40 of 53) of FIV-seropositive cats, and multiple concurrent cytopenias were common. Anemia, lymphopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia occurred in 36%, 53%, 34%, and 8

Approximately 5% of cats in animal shelters in the United States test positive for either feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which translates to more than 100,000 positive cats managed by shelters each year. Little is known about the current status of retroviral management in animal shelters, particularly in regions burdened by chronic pet overpopulation and high shelter admissions, such as the southern United States. The purpose of this study was to describe feline retroviral management in Florida shelters. Shelters were surveyed on practices including select

The electrophoretogram of 89 cats, including those infected by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV+), feline leukaemia virus (FeLV+) and non-infected, showed statistically significant differences in several of the fractions. FIV+ cats had very high protein values (mean, 8.10 g/dl), mostly because of hypergammaglobulinemia (mean, 2.81 g/dl) as compared with non-infected animals and FeLV+. In addition, in these FIV+ animals, the albumin/globulins ratio (A/G) was very low (mean, 0.72). Statistically significant differences in A/G and alpha2-globulin fraction were observed in FeLV+ group (A/G mean,

Despite its common occurrence, the aetiology of chronic gingivostomatitis in cats remains uncertain. Aetiology is likely multifactorial, and several infectious agents may be associated with chronic gingivostomatitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of feline calicivirus (FCV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and Bartonella henselae (B. henselae) in cats with chronic gingivostomatitis and in an age-matched control group. In addition, other factors, e. g., environmental conditions were investigated. In 52 ca

Lymphoma is the most common neoplasia in cats and is frequently linked with concurrent retroviral infections. Despite preventive strategies, feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) remain endemic in many parts of the world, with FeLV significantly shortening the lifespan of infected cats. In Brazil and other low-income countries, the incidence of FeLV and FIV remains high. However, the distribution of these retroviruses across South America is still unclear, and their correlation with the anatomical and clinical features of feline lymphoma remains poorly understood

With the commercial release in Australia in 2004 of a vaccine against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV; Fel-O-Vax FIV®), the landscape for FIV diagnostics shifted substantially. Point-of-care (PoC) antibody detection kits, which had been the mainstay for diagnosing FIV infection since the early 1990s, were no longer considered accurate to use in FIV-vaccinated cats, because of the production of vaccine-induced antibodies that were considered indistinguishable from those produced in natural FIV infections. Consequently, attention shifted to alternative diagnostic methods such as nucleic acid

The involvement of feline interleukin 6 (IL-6)-like activity in polyclonal B-cell activation in feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection was investigated by using the proliferative response of hybridoma cell clone B3B1. Cats spontaneously infected with FIV had hyperimmunoglobulinemia, as shown by increases in the percentage of gamma-globulin and the plasma IgG concentration and decrease in the albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio. Because IL-6 plays an essential role in the differentiation of activated B cells into Ig-secreting cells, we examined the effect of FIV infection on the plasma IL-6 lev

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is one of the most common infectious agents affecting cats worldwide .FIV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) share many properties: both are lifelong persistent lentiviruses that are similar genetically and morphologically and both viruses propagate in T-lymphocytes, macrophages, and neural cells. Experimentally infected cats have measurable immune suppression, which sometimes progresses to an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A transient initial state of infection is followed by a long latent stage with low virus replication and absence of clinical si

Thirty-five FIV-seropositive cats and 55 FIV-seronegative matched cats were examined for yeasts (oropharyngeal swabs) and dermatophytes (hair brushings). The frequency of isolation of Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans was significantly higher in the former group. The only dermatophyte isolated was Microsporum canis. Its prevalence was three times higher among FIV-infected cats than among control animals.

To identify the early target cells and tissues in transmucosal feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection, cats were exposed to a clade C FIV isolate via the oral-nasal or vaginal mucosa and multiple tissues were examined by virus isolation coculture (VI), DNA PCR, catalyzed tyramide signal-amplified in situ hybridization (TSA-ISH), and immunohistochemistry between days 1 and 12 postinoculation (p.i.). FIV RNA was detected in tonsil and oral or vaginal mucosa as early as 1 day p.i. by TSA-ISH and in retropharyngeal, tracheobronchial, or external iliac lymph nodes and sometimes in spleen or

FIV is a lentivirus of domestic cats that causes neurologic disorders which are remarkably similar to those found in HIV-1 infected people. Using feline neuron cultures, we investigated the potential of both FIV virus and FIV-Env protein to cause neuronal damage through the excitotoxicity mechanism. The neuron swelling and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assays were used as measures of cellular damage. The effects of FIV Env protein on glutamate receptor mediated increases in intracellular calcium were also examined. We found that FIV virus and FIV-Env protein significantly increased LDH r

Specific pathogen-free cats were infected with the Maryland strain of FIV (FIV-MD) for the purpose of assessing the effects of FIV infection on the central nervous system (CNS). Two separate studies were performed, involving a total of 13 infected cats and six age-matched, sham-inoculated controls. All animals infected with FIV-MD seroconverted by 8 weeks post-infection and virus was recovered from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of all infected cats. All of the infected animals had lower absolute CD4+ cells counts and decreased CD4+/CD8+ ratios. Virus was recovered from the cerebrospinal f

Of 467 cat serums tested for antibody to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) 120 (26%) were positive. The average age of positive cats was 7.5 years (range 1 to 16 years), and 67% were male. Of 110 serums collected in 1980, 27 (24.5%) were positive. A wide variety of clinical signs including oral cavity disease, anorexia, weight loss, lethargy, depression, fever, respiratory and urinary tract disease, conjunctivitis, abscesses, anaemia and lymphadenopathy were observed in the cats with serum antibody. There was often a history of chronic disease or recurrence of particular or various clinical

A 5-year-old female Siamese cat was presented to the veterinary teaching hospital with a history of bronchopneumonia for 20 days. The cat had not responded to antibacterial chemotherapy and had developed a pronounced submandibular lymphadenopathy. Characteristically encapsulated yeast cells with narrow-necked buds were clearly seen in a fine-needle aspirate of the lymph node with an India ink preparation. Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans was identified. Susceptibility tests on the isolated strain were performed using antifungal tablets. The strain was sensitive to amphotericin B, flucon

The ability of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) to induce neurodegenerative changes in vitro similar to those due to HIV was examined as a potential model to examine the mechanisms underlying AIDS dementia. Primary cultures of feline neural tissue (neurons, astrocytes and microglia) were established from E40-E57 fetal cat cortex and challenged by inoculation with the NCSU1 strain of FIV. Proviral FIV was detected in the cultures and correlated with the presence of microglia. No direct toxicity of FIV was seen. Stimulation of FIV-inoculated cortical cultures with 20 uM glutamate resulted in

The inadvertent introduction of feline calicivirus into a colony of 19 experimental cats, 13 of which were infected with feline immunodeficiency virus, resulted in the development of chronic gingivitis in nine animals. Of these, six were infected with both viruses, one with the immunodeficiency virus alone and two with the calicivirus alone. The gingivitis was generally more severe in the cats infected with both viruses, suggesting that feline immunodeficiency virus may make cats infected with calicivirus more susceptible to chronic gingivitis.

BACKGROUND: Hosts are able to restrict viral replication to contain virus spread before adaptive immunity is fully initiated. Many viruses have acquired genes directly counteracting intrinsic restriction mechanisms. This phenomenon has led to a co-evolutionary signature for both the virus and host which often provides a barrier against interspecies transmission events. Through different mechanisms of action, but with similar consequences, spumaviral feline foamy virus (FFV) Bet and lentiviral feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) Vif counteract feline APOBEC3 (feA3) restriction factors that lead

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) causes progressive immune dysfunction in cats similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in humans. Although combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is effective against HIV, there is no definitive therapy to improve clinical outcomes in cats with FIV. This study therefore evaluated pharmacokinetics and clinical outcomes of cART (2.5 mg/kg Dolutegravir; 20 mg/kg Tenofovir; 40 mg/kg Emtricitabine) in FIV-infected domestic cats. Specific pathogen free cats were experimentally infected with FIV and administered either cART or placebo treatments (n = 6 each
