The presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and secretory component (SC) was investigated in normal human skin and in cutaneous neoplasms including a variety of sweat gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry in normal sweat glands revealed the occurrence of secretory IgA (sIgA) as indicated by reactivity for IgA and SC in serial sections. The immunoglobulin A (IgA) response to small intestinal bacteria was studied in rats with self-filling blind loops (SFBLs), surgically constructed in continuity with the intestine or at the end of a Roux-en-Y loop (RY-SFBL) so as to avoid filling with chyme. Secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in serum was measured in patients with various liver diseases using enzyme immunoassay specific to sIgA. Marked elevation of the serum sIgA concentrations was found in liver diseases especially in intrahepatic or extrahepatic cholestasis. In chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis serum sIgA correlated significantly with leucine aminopeptidase (r = 0.69), GOT (r = 0.66), alkaline phosphatase (r = 0.55), and direct bilirubin (r = 0.42). 57 patients with duodenum ulcer were examined. Secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) was determined by an immunofluorescent method in the gastric and duodenum mucosa depending on the population size of pyloric helicobacter (HB). The frequency of SIgA detection in the gastric mucosa depends on the HB population size: when it is considerable SIgA was not detected in 41% cases. SIgA was detected in the gastric mucosa without pathological lesions in 85% cases, in atrophic gastritis in 70% and in superficial gastritis in 54% cases.

Secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) or the secretory component (SC) in vaginal fluid of hysterectomised patients were established by means of simple and double immunodiffusion, according to Mancini or Ouchterlony, using an S-IgA standard.
