A 59-year-old woman with goiter complained of nausea, vomiting and weight loss in April 2000. She underwent an endoscopic examination and was admitted to our hospital because gastric biopsy specimens revealed that she had diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. A thyroid biopsy also detected the diffuse infiltration of lymphoma cells, which were positive for CD19, CD20, CD38 and HLA-DR. Although the cells expressed surface immunoglobulin a chain, they lacked expressions of the kappa and lambda light chains. We have studied the configuration of genes encoding for the heavy and light chains in the tumoral cells of 6 patients affected by alpha heavy chain disease (alpha HCD). The results showed the presence of rearrangement of the alpha heavy chain as well as the kappa light chain genes whereas the lambda genes were in germinal configuration. Thus, these results suggest the presence of a monoclonal compound in the tumoral cells in the alpha HCD.

To induce constitutive immunity against a pathogenic strain of Escherichia coli (K99), a rearranged immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy chain (HC) gene was constructed. The lymphocyte marker pattern of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cells was related to current concepts of lymphoma classification. In a series of 28 lymphomas lymphocyte markers indicated that 2 were of histiocytic origin, 2 were unclassifiable, none were derived from T cells and the remainder were B-cell neoplasms. We obtained spontaneous formation of Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B lymphocyte colonies from the blood of four patients with mononucleosis with the use of soft-agar medium. The colonies were propagated into separate cell lines and analyzed for their immunoglobulin secretion. Immunohistological studies have established an association between the deposition of the amyloid P protein and disease status in chronically inflamed periodontal tissues. The aim of this study was to determine if amyloid-like fibrils could be extracted from these tissues. Somatic cell hybrid clones were isolated from the fusion of RPC 5,4 mouse myeloma cells and B lymphocytes from three patients with agammaglobulinemia. Twenty-seven intestinal lymphoma patients were studied. Abnormal alpha-chain immunoglobulin was detected in the sera of seven of these patients. The alpha-chain disease patients were from the rural areas of Southern Iran. They were of low socio-economic status and their age ranged from 15-44 years.
