Swelling of and cytoplasmic streaming within the grain, germination pore expansion, and pollen tube emergence, in that order, constitute the normal germination pattern of Impatiens holstii pollen grains. This normal sequence of events becomes manifest when the pollen grains are placed on water-agar, barbituric acid-agar, and on barbital-agar media whereas this sequence of events is interfered with when the pollen grains are incubated on amytal-agar or on seconal-agar media. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that the normal sequence of events which make up the normal germination pattern

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the remediation potential and disturbance response indicators of Impatiens walleriana exposed to benzene and chromium. Numerous studies over the years have found abundant evidence of the carcinogenicity of benzene and chromium (VI) in humans. Benzene and chromium are two toxic industrial chemicals commonly found together at contaminated sites, and one of the most common management strategies employed in the recovery of sites contaminated by petroleum products and trace metals is in situ remediation. Given that increasing interest has focused on the use

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) remains a major clinical concern, as current therapies often show low efficacy and undesirable side effects. This study investigated the hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory potential of Impatiens henslowiana (IH) ethanolic extract and its active compound, betulin. IH was non-toxic up to 4000 mg/kg and showed protective effects in D-GalN-induced hepatotoxic rats at 200 and 400 mg/kg. Betulin exhibited strong antioxidant activity at a concentration of 9.5 µM and 19 µM in DCFH-DA assay, along with cytoprotective activity and downregulation of PI3K

Sexual production in social insects marks the peak of colony development, yet the mechanisms regulating it remain unclear. We investigated the role of brood in colony development, worker reproduction and sexual production in Bombus impatiens. While larvae are known to reduce worker egg laying and enhance the queen's reproductive inhibition, these effects were previously tested only in small groups. We manipulated brood size in full-sized, young colonies by doubling or removing brood and monitored development. Colonies with doubled brood produced significantly more gynes, independent of the num

Animal size affects the energetics of locomotion. Using female caste dimorphism in bumblebees, we assessed how body mass impacts morphological and physiological traits linked with flight. The allometric relationships obtained for wing surface area, wingbeat frequency, and flight and resting metabolic rates of workers could predict the trait values of queens that were more than fourfold larger. Flight success of queens decreased over time in part because of a large increase in body mass and a decrease in traits linked with flight, namely wingbeat frequency and metabolic rate, and the activity o

The high prevalence of morbidity and mortality from bacterial infections, together with the growing threat of antibacterial resistance, necessitated the development of alternative new drugs from traditional medicine. In Ethiopia, Impatiens tinctoria A. Rich has been traditionally used for the treatment of fungal infections such as ringworms that cause tinea pedis and it have also different medical values. Scientific information on its biological activity against a broad range of bacteria and safety data is scant, compared to its folklore data. In this study, we evaluated antibacterial activiti

Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) is a member of the genus Tospovirus, and one of the prevalent viruses infecting ornamental plants, including begonia. Since the late 1980s, it has caused dramatic and unusual diseases on many flower crops, leading to considerable economic losses to the greenhouse floriculture industry (1). The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is the only species currently known to vector INSV (1). In spring 2012, stunted plant growth and necrotic spots were observed on leaves of all Hiemalis begonias (Begonia × hiemalis Fotsch.) in a greenhouse

Carbon dioxide (CO2) has pleiotropic effects on insect physiology and behavior. Although diverse, many impacts are related to changes in metabolism and reallocation of macronutrients. Here we examined the metabolic shift induced by CO2 and its regulation using Bombus impatiens. CO2 applied to bumble bee gynes induces bypass of diapause and transition into reproduction. We analyzed ovary activation and macronutrient amounts in four tissues/body parts (fat body, thorax, ovaries, and crop) at three timepoints following CO2 administration. To tease apart the effects of CO2 on reproduction and meta

Social insect pollinators, such as bumblebees, face increasing threats from environmental agrochemicals; yet the sublethal effects of these compounds across different levels of biological organization remain poorly understood. This study uses an integrative approach to examine how chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations of the insecticide sulfoxaflor affects the common eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens). Microcolonies of B. impatiens worker bees were fed sulfoxaflor-treated sugar water for 21 days. We then assessed changes in molecular, physiological, and behavioral traits resulting fro

Eighteen compounds (1-18), seven new (3-9) and eleven previously reported (1, 2, and 10-18), were isolated from the flowers of Impatiens balsamina (Linn). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using different spectroscopic methods, including NMR (1D and 2D), UV, IR, and HR-ESI-MS. Analysis of the bioassay results showed the compounds had notable anti-hepatic fibrosis activity against murine Hepatic Stellate Cells (t-HSC/Cl-6) and anti-diabetics activity against α-glucosidase. Specifically, new compounds 7, 8, 9 showed significant inhibitory activity on t-HSC/Cl-6 cells with

BACKGROUND: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an important agricultural crop frequently threatened by pests such as Bradysia impatiens (B. impatiens), a globally distributed sciarid fly whose larvae inflict severe damage on roots, stems, and leaves, leading to substantial yield losses. Despite its economic importance, the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying tomato defense against B. impatiens remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: In this study, integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches were employed to investigate the responses of tomato leaves to B. impatiens larval infestat

The effects of the rust fungus Puccinia komarovii Tranzschel and the aphid Impatientinum asiaticum Nevsky 1929 on plant height, seed number per capsule, and seed mass were investigated in eight small balsam (Impatiens parviflora DC.) stands in Hungary and one in Poland. Two stands were infected by rust, five by aphids, and two were healthy. The lowest average plant height was 37.5 cm and the highest 94.7 cm, both measured in aphid-infested stands. Examining the stands separately, no relationship appeared with the type of damage. For data pooled across stands, differences were significant: rust

The seeds of Impatiens balsamina L. have been traditionally used in East Asian medicine and are known to contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. However, studies focusing on seed-derived callus remain limited. This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the antioxidant activities and lipid accumulation-inhibitory effects of 70% ethanol extracts from seeds (IB) and seed-derived callus (IBC) of I. balsamina. Callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Antioxidant activities were evaluated using DPPH radical scave

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant infections highlights the need for new antimicrobial agents. Ethiopia's diverse plant resources remain largely underexplored, including Impatiens rothii tuber, an endemic species traditionally used to treat infections. This study therefore evaluated the antimicrobial activity of I. rothii tuber extract and its isolated compound, spinasterol.
METHODS: Tuber extracts were prepared using 80% methanol and fractionated via silica gel chromatography to isolate spinasterol (1), identified by MS and NMR. Antimicrobial activity was tested against
