Viral epizootic reveals inbreeding depression in a habitually inbreeding mammal.

Inbreeding is typically detrimental to fitness. However, some animal populations are reported to inbreed without incurring inbreeding depression, ostensibly due to past "purging" of deleterious alleles. Challenging this is the position that purging can, at best, only adapt a population to a particular environment; novel selective regimes will always uncover additional inbreeding load. We consider this in a prominent test case: the eusocial naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber), one of the most inbred of all free-living mammals. We investigated factors affecting mortality in a population of na

Inbreeding depression in male reproductive traits.

Inbreeding frequently leads to inbreeding depression, a general reduction in trait values and loss of fitness, and it appears that some sexually selected traits are especially sensitive to inbreeding, but sperm may be an exception. Additionally, because inbreeding depression is always in the direction of low fitness, it can reveal the direction of past selection acting on trait values. Here, we experimentally manipulate levels of inbreeding in a beetle (Tribolium castaneum) by full-sib mating for six generations. This breeding design allowed us to track the effects of increasing homozygosity o

Inbreeding depression in male gametic performance.

One key objective in evolutionary ecology is to understand the magnitude of inbreeding depression expressed across sex-specific components of fitness. One major component of male fitness is fertilization success, which depends on male gametic performance (sperm and pollen performance in animals and plants, respectively). Inbreeding depression in male gametic performance could create sex-specific inbreeding depression in fitness, increase the benefit of inbreeding avoidance and reduce the efficacy of artificial insemination and pollination. However, there has been no assessment of the degree to

No evidence of inbreeding depression in a Tasmanian devil insurance population despite significant variation in inbreeding.

Inbreeding depression occurs when inbred individuals experience reduced fitness as a result of reduced genome-wide heterozygosity. The Tasmanian devil faces extinction due to a contagious cancer, devil facial tumour disease (DFTD). An insurance metapopulation was established in 2006 to ensure the survival of the species and to be used as a source population for re-wilding and genetic rescue. The emergence of DFTD and the rapid decline of wild devil populations have rendered the species at risk of inbreeding depression. We used 33 microsatellite loci to (1) reconstruct a pedigree for the insura

Quantifying genetic load through joint modelling of inbreeding depression and inbreeding load for litter size in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Genetic load, defined as the burden of deleterious variants carried by a population, has two components: a realized one that is expressed as reduced fitness, and a hidden one that is masked in heterozygotes. The hidden component, arising from recessive (or partially recessive) deleterious alleles and from overdominant loci, constitutes the inbreeding load (IL), which is unmasked under inbreeding and observed as inbreeding depression. Conventional analyses focus on average inbreeding depression and assume homogeneous effects across ancestors. In contrast, the IL framework allows het

Genomic inbreeding coefficients and inbreeding depression of semen production traits at genome-wide and chromosomal levels in Japanese Holstein bulls.

We aimed to estimate inbreeding coefficients and the effects of inbreeding depression on semen production traits at both the genome-wide and chromosomal levels. We utilized pedigree data for 19,921 animals, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data on 5700 Japanese Holstein bulls, and 52,193 semen collection records from 775 bulls. We estimated 4 different inbreeding coefficients, namely a pedigree-based coefficient (FPED) and 3 genomic coefficients derived from SNP data. The genomic coefficients consisted of one based on the genomic relationship matrix (FGRM), one based on runs of homozygosit

Inbreeding depression on semen quality in Austrian dual-purpose simmental bulls.

Using pedigree data, the inbreeding coefficients of 715 Austrian dual-purpose Simmental (Fleckvieh) bulls stationed in two artificial insemination (AI) centres in Upper and Lower Austria were calculated and incorporated in statistical models for the analysis of semen quality. Five semen quality parameters (volume, concentration, motility, number of spermatozoa per ejaculate and percentage of viable spermatozoa) of approximately 30,000 ejaculates, used in two separate data sets, were investigated. The mixed model included the fixed effects age class of the bull, bull handler, semen collector, m

Experimental evidence that high levels of inbreeding depress sperm competitiveness.

The effects of inbreeding on sperm quantity and quality are among the most dramatic examples of inbreeding depression. The extent to which inbreeding depression results in decreased fertilization success of a male's sperm, however, remains largely unknown. This task is made more difficult by the fact that other factors, such as cryptic female choice, male sperm allocation and mating order, can also drive patterns of paternity. Here, we use artificial insemination to eliminate these extraneous sources of variation and to measure the effects of inbreeding on the competitiveness of a male's sperm

Disease-mediated inbreeding depression in a large, open population of cooperative crows.

Disease-mediated inbreeding depression is a potential cost of living in groups with kin, but its general magnitude in wild populations is unclear. We examined the relationships between inbreeding, survival and disease for 312 offspring, produced by 35 parental pairs, in a large, open population of cooperatively breeding American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos). Genetic analyses of parentage, parental relatedness coefficients and pedigree information suggested that 23 per cent of parental dyads were first- or second-order kin. Heterozygosity-heterozygosity correlations suggested that a microsatel

Exploring inbreeding depression in Brazilian Angus cattle population using pedigree and genomic data.

INTRODUCTION: Inbreeding depression refers to the decline in performance caused by increased levels of inbreeding, which results from mating individuals with common ancestors. This study aimed to estimate inbreeding coefficients based on both pedigree and genomic information using six different metrics and evaluate, the inbreeding depression on different traits officially evaluated by the Brazilian Angus Association. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 13,777 genotyped animals, imputed to a density of 78,837 SNPs, and 530,327 animals in the pedigree file, extending up to 17 generations, were use

Variation in inbreeding depression and plasticity across native and non-native field environments.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since the early 1990s, research on genetic variation of phenotypic plasticity has expanded and empirical research has emphasized the role of the environment on the expression of inbreeding depression. An emerging question is how these two evolutionary ecology mechanisms interact in novel environments. Interest in this area has grown with the need to understand the establishment of populations in response to climate change, and to human-assisted transport to novel environments. METHODS: We compare performance in the field of outcrossed (O) and inbred lines (S1, S2) from 20

Effect of inbreeding depression on growth and fluctuating asymmetry in Turkish young males.

This study sought to examine the effects of inbreeding on physical development and fluctuating asymmetry (FA). A total 144 male high-school students (mean age = 18.11 +/- 0.52) whose parents are first cousins (F = 0.125) of low-socioeconomic status and 146 male students (mean age = 18.08 +/- 0.54) from the same school who do not have any consanguineous parents (F = 0) were observed in Ankara. In addition to the weight and height measurements of the individuals, eight bilateral traits (hand width, elbow width, wrist width, knee width, ankle width, foot width, ear length, and ear width) were mea

Inbreeding depression load for litter size in Entrepelado and Retinto Iberian pig varieties1.

Individual-specific hidden inbreeding depression load (IDL) can be accounted for in livestock populations by appropriate best linear unbiased prediction approaches. This genetic effect has a recessive pattern and reveals when inherited in terms of identity-by-descent. Nevertheless, IDL inherits as a pure additive genetic background and can be selected using standard breeding values. The main target of this research was to evaluate IDL for litter size in 2 Iberian pig varieties (Entrepelado and Retinto) from a commercial breeding-stock. Analyses were performed on the total number of piglets bor

First reproductive signs of inbreeding depression in Southern California male mountain lions (Puma concolor).

Long-term studies of mountain lions (Puma concolor) in Southern California have documented persistent small population sizes and the lowest genetic variation of any mountain lion population, except for the Federally endangered mountain lion subspecies, the Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi). There is overwhelming molecular evidence supporting inbreeding and low genetic diversity in these Southern California populations but there is a lack of phenotypical evidence of inbreeding depression. The primary goal of this study was to assess male mountain lions, in Southern California, for teratospe

Genomic partitioning and functional dissection of inbreeding depression for stature in Brown Swiss cattle.

BACKGROUND: Small effective population size and the disproportionately large use of few genetically superior bulls in artificial insemination lead to extensive runs of homozygosity and an increased risk of homozygosity for deleterious alleles in domestic cattle, which may cause inbreeding depression. The adverse effects of inbreeding on phenotypic performance are well established, but the genetic variants contributing to inbreeding depression remain largely unknown. This study aimed to analyse the impacts of inbreeding on stature (measured as height at the sacral bone) in a cohort of 15,306 Br

Tuberculosis Susceptibility and Inbreeding Depression Hinder Ex Situ Conservation in a Critically Endangered Rainforest Bird.

Captive breeding can be a key component of species conservation strategies, but also exposes these rare species to novel environments including the pathogen landscape. The critically endangered white-winged wood duck (WWWD) Asarcornis scutulata has experienced substantial population declines, local extirpations and fragmentation of its former range in Southeast Asia, making it one of the rarest birds in the world. As in other rare species, WWWD declines have led to the initiation of captive breeding programs, but these have been hampered by the WWWDs' high susceptibility to Mycobacterium avium

Genome-wide mapping and estimation of inbreeding depression of semen quality traits in a cattle population.

Inbreeding depression is known to affect quantitative traits such as male fertility and sperm quality, but the genetic basis for these associations is poorly understood. Most studies have been limited to examining how pedigree- or marker-derived genome-wide autozygosity is associated with quantitative phenotypes. In this study, we analyzed possible associations of genetic features of inbreeding depression with percentage of live spermatozoa and total number of spermatozoa in 19,720 ejaculates obtained from 554 Austrian Fleckvieh bulls during routine artificial insemination programs. Genome-wid

Genome-Wide Homozygosity Predicts Inbreeding Depression in the Hihi/Stitchbird (Notiomystis cincta) Better Than Realised Load.

Population declines result in increasingly small populations, which often experience an increase in inbreeding. Inbreeding may be negatively associated with fitness traits like survival and reproduction, that is, inbreeding depression, and is therefore detrimental to population persistence and adaptive potential. Realised genetic load-the count of homozygous deleterious alleles-is increasingly used as a proxy for fitness when investigating inbreeding depression. However, assessing the limitations of genetic load in predicting fitness, and comparisons with other homozygosity and inbreeding metr
