A statistical comparison of pad numbers versus pad weights in the quantification of urinary incontinence.

AIMS: Pad per day (PPD) usage is a frequently utilized measure of urinary incontinence. The 24-hour pad weight test (24PWT) is a reproducible test for quantifying incontinence volumes. We investigated whether PPD validly reports the magnitude of urinary incontinence. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients undergoing stress incontinence surgery from July 2002 to 2005. Inclusion criteria were a documented 24PWT and patient-reported PPD usage. Grams of urine loss per pad (GPP) provided a third measure of incontinence. Descriptive statistics and correlations between all variables an

A newly designed deodorant pad for urinary incontinence.

The authors designed a new pad for urinary incontinence. It is composed of a cloth of acrylonitrile copper sulfide and another cloth of iron-phthalocyanine. In vitro experiments showed that acrylonitrile copper sulfide cloth inhibited the growth of most bacteria causing urinary tract infection, and that iron-phthalocyanine cloth effectively eliminated bad-smelling gases. The use of this pad relieved diaper-dermatitis and diminished offensive smells from feces and urine. This pad was well received by nurses and helpers taking care of incontinent elderly people.

A cost-effectiveness study of the management of intractable urinary incontinence by urinary catheterisation or incontinence pads.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare the costs and effects of management of intractable urinary incontinence by urinary catheterisation or incontinence pads. DESIGN: This was a prospective, randomised study comparing catheterisation with pads, supplemented by additional data collected from patients with chronic indwelling catheters. Main outcome measures were costs of equipment, nursing time, patient preference, nursing preference, and clinical and bacteriological assessment of urinary infection. SUBJECTS: 78 intractably incontinent elderly female patients were randomly allocated to manag

Value-based procurement in practice: individualised holistic prescribing for incontinence containment pads.

BACKGROUND: Poorly managed incontinence has many negative impacts on the health and wellbeing of care home residents and their carers. This can result from generic continence product prescriptions that are not tailored to individual need. AIMS: A holistic product assessment tool was designed to embody the concept of value-based procurement, facilitate personalised prescriptions and overcome barriers created by the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: In May and November 2021, residents with incontinence problems in six care homes underwent a holistic product assessment followed by personalised prescri

The Pyridium pad test for diagnosing urinary incontinence. A comparative study of asymptomatic and incontinent women.

Eighteen women with urodynamically proven genuine stress incontinence awaiting surgery and 23 normal, asymptomatic, continent female volunteers took part in a study to compare the accuracy of a qualitative pad test with a quantitative pad-weighing test in detecting urine loss. Each woman took 600 mg of phenazopyridine hydrochloride (Pyridium, Parke-Davis) in three equally divided doses over 18-24 hours and then underwent a standardized, one-hour pad test as described by the International Continence Society. The Pyridium pad test was regarded as positive if there was any orange staining on the

An assessment of the importance of pad testing in stress urinary incontinence and the effects of incontinence on the life quality of women.

Our objectives in this study were to determine the severity of incontinence using pad testing and the effects of incontinence on the life quality of women with stress incontinence. Fifty women with a diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence were selected for the study. The Symptom Severity Index (SSI) and Symptom Impact Index (SII) were used to determine the severity and impact of incontinence. Afterwards the women were given a 1-h pad test. According to the pad tests 38% of women suffered severe to very severe incontinence. Women who showed severe incontinence on pad testing scored high in th

An analysis of rapid pad testing and the history for the diagnosis of stress incontinence.

Two rapid exercise pad tests, the vitamin B test, and the methylene blue test, are introduced for the diagnosis of urinary stress incontinence. The vitamin B test is entirely non-invasive, takes only a few minutes to perform, and is especially useful as an office test. The methylene blue test has fewer variables, and fits easily into a urodynamic routine. With the methylene blue test, a direct correlation was noted between amount of urine lost and pressure generated by the tests. This conforms to the definition of stress incontinence as a passive process. The sensitivity of the test in a group

Pad test with fixed bladder volume in urinary stress incontinence.

A pad-weighing test of urinary stress incontinence during a set program of physical exercises is presented. The test was begun at a fixed bladder volume (75% of maximum capacity) and was repeated once. The duration of the exercises was approx. 15 min. Leakage was greater in the second test, but statistical analysis showed highly significant intraindividual correlation between the two amounts. Degree of leakage was not correlated to subjective assessment of incontinence. The test can be done as part of a routine urodynamic investigation.

The 24-h pad test in the assessment of post-prostatectomy incontinence: is there still a role for counting pads per day?

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the correlation between the pad-per-day (PPD) count and the 24-h pad test (24 h-PT) during the first postoperative year after radical prostatectomy (RP), and to determine the clinical utility of the PPD count for quantitative urinary incontinence (UI) assessment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed a prospectively maintained database of 2040 men who underwent RP between 2001 and 2025 at a tertiary referral centre. A total of 8787 paired measurements of PPD count and 24 h-PT were analysed. Urinary leakage was assessed at standardised timepoints (1 week, 6

Fibroepothelial polyp of the glans penis due to pad use for urinary incontinence.

A 78-year-old man was admitted to our urology polyclinic with painless penile mass. The lesion was 3.5 cm in size on the ventral aspect of the penis. He had been using a pad for urinary incontinance for 10 months and said that the lesion had been increasing in size for past 3 months. He underwent a wide local excision under local anesthesia. The histopathologic diagnosis was fibroepithelial polyp. A fibroepithelial polyp of the penis is very rare and strongly linked to long-term condom catheter use. We present a case of fibroepithelial polyp of the glans which is not associated with condom cat

Pad stress tests with increasing load for the diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence.

AIM: The aim of the study was to test the ability of pad stress tests with increasing load (supine, jumping on the floor, and jumping on a trampoline) to document stress incontinence in subjectively stress incontinent women. METHODS: In this prospective study 147 subjectively stress and mixed incontinent women performed consecutively the three pad stress tests with a bladder volume of 300 ml. Nineteen women performed a second trampoline pad stress test to test repeatability of the test. Nine continent women performed a trampoline pad stress test in order to determine if subjectively continent

Definition of mild, moderate and severe incontinence on the 24-hour pad test.

The values for 'mild', 'moderate' and 'severe' urinary incontinence have not been determined for the 24-hour pad test. To define these values, a prospective observational study was performed on 110 women with the primary symptom of urinary incontinence. Consenting women performed two 1-hour pad tests one week apart, and seven 24-hour pad tests for seven consecutive days. The 1-hour pad test definitions for mild, moderate and severe were translated to centiles, and used to categorise the 24-hour test values. This revealed that the range for 'mild incontinence' was between 1.3 and 20 g, 'moderat

The influence of pad test loss on management of women with urodynamic stress incontinence.

Members of the International Continence Society (UK section) were randomised to receive a scenario comprising clinical and urodynamic data of a woman with urodynamic stress incontinence, including a one-hour pad loss of either 42 g (large loss) or 7 g (small loss). Members were asked to indicate their initial management choice from a list of four options. Three hundred and fifteen of 440 (72%) members responded. Gynaecologists and urologists were significantly more likely to choose surgical treatment for patients with a large pad loss (24% vs 8%; difference 15.8%, 95% CI 2.9-28.7), despite pub

Perineal pad weighing versus videographic analysis in genuine stress incontinence.

A comparison was made of the sensitivity of perineal pad testing and the videographic diagnosis of genuine stress incontinence (GSI) in postmenopausal women. The 99% upper confidence limit for pad weight gains in 90 normal women was 1.4 g. Ninety-nine women with urodynamically proven GSI were studied and 14 had false negative pad tests. There was no significant correlation between the videographic assessment and the gain in pad weight. We recommend the use of the pad test to confirm incontinence only in the absence of imaging facilities as the latter is more sensitive.

Concordance between one-hour pad test and subjective assessment of stress incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the concordance among the 1-hour pad test results, subjective questions regarding incontinence, and a quality-of-life questionnaire to assess the role of the pad test as a noninvasive measurement tool in clinical trials. The 1-hour nonstandard pad test is one of several quantitative tools used to measure urinary incontinence; however, its utility has been questioned. METHODS: The study subjects were women participating in 2 clinical trials evaluating noninvasive interventions: circular muscle exercises versus pelvic floor muscle training for urinary incontinence.
