Although fractures are an important source of disability among the growing elderly populations of industrialized societies, patient-centered multidimensional outcome information is scarce. The purpose of this study was to quantify the natural history of recovery from fractures of the upper and lower extremities. From the 1994/95 WHO MONICA survey in Augsburg, Germany, we selected all persons aged 58-78 years who had experienced a fracture during the preceeding 10 years, along with a control population twice as large. The Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and the Medical Outcomes Study Shor

Ms. X is a person with cerebral palsy and schizophrenia. She has intractable bedsores that are a result of her immobility and to poor wound care related to her delusional thinking. Despite intensive community support, the wounds have worsened to the point that she has needed multiple hospitalizations to prevent systemic sepsis, a life-threatening condition. She is capable of placement decisions and wishes for independence at home but is incapable of making wound care decisions and does not appreciate that immediately returning home from the hospital, instead of going into a special care facili

Based on the recent statistics published by the Stroke Association (UK), first-time incidence of stroke occurs almost 17 million times a year worldwide (one every two seconds), making Stroke as the second cause of death in the world. By the age of 75, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 6 men will have a stroke, which is one of the largest causes of disability, as half of all stroke survivors have a disability, making those persons dependent on others (1 in 5 are cared for by family and/or friends). People living longer is a cause for celebration, but older people are more vulnerable to mental health, cogni

Laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy is a major advance but a challenging procedure to learn even after laparoscopic training. It requires significant previous training in both laparoscopic and transplant surgery. Telementoring has been shown to reduce the laparoscopic learning curve in other fields. Of six cases of hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL) living donor nephrectomy at our institution, an on-site mentor supervised the initial two. We present the subsequent four cases as the first documented examples of telementored HAL live donor nephrectomy. Telelink was established with a Comstation

BACKGROUND: Globally, older people are living independently either alone or with their spouse, population continues to age. In Singapore, some may live with an unrelated older person in a public rental apartment. In Asia, these older people are associated with increased risks of poor health and social isolation, have poorer social support and a poor quality of life. Few studies have explored why these older people choose such living arrangements, the challenges they encountered and what has helped or may help them overcome these challenges.
AIM: To explore older people's experiences of living

Elderly care at home is a matter of great concern if the elderly live alone, since unforeseen circumstances might occur that affect their well-being. Technologies that assist the elderly in independent living are essential for enhancing care in a cost-effective and reliable manner. Elderly care applications often demand real-time observation of the environment and the resident’s activities using an event-driven system. As an emerging area of research and development, it is necessary to explore the approaches of the elderly care system in the literature to identify current practices for f

BACKGROUND: Currently, healthcare services, such as institutional care facilities, are burdened with an increasing number of elderly people and individuals with chronic illnesses and a decreasing number of competent caregivers.
OBJECTIVES: To relieve the burden on healthcare services, independent living at home could be facilitated, by offering individuals and their (in)formal caregivers support in their daily care and needs. With the rise of pervasive healthcare, new information technology solutions can assist elderly people ("residents") and their caregivers to allow residents to live indep

OBJECTIVE: Pneumonia is reported to be associated with high morbidity in elderly and compromised individuals, with poor oral health demonstrated to be a significant risk factor for pneumonia. Several opportunistic pathogens, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, have been detected in patients with pneumonia. We investigated the prevalence of opportunistic pathogens in the oral cavity of healthy independent living Japanese elderly subjects and analysed factors related to harbouring those pathogens.

PURPOSE: Service providers and researchers need a better understanding of autistic perspectives on independence and daily living skills (DLS). These perspectives will help service providers and researchers create meaningful, accessible, and effective supports that promote the type of independence autistic people desire. We address this knowledge gap by asking autistic young adults about their perspectives on independence, and how DLS help them meet their independence goals. METHOD: Fifteen autistic young adults (ages 18–30 years) without co-occurring intellectual disability completed qualitati

BACKGROUND: The United Nations has declared that people with disabilities should be enabled to live as independently as possible, since independence is correlated with a better quality of life. Consequently, services need to have common and validated measurement tools for the evaluation of the different levels of personal support needs in order to promote independent living skills. We aimed to create and validate the Adult Independence Living Measurement Scale (AILMS) to estimate personal skills considered tantamount for independent living in adult persons with intellectual and developmental d

This article confronts the belief that, among elderly persons, living (in)dependently is equivalent to functioning (in)dependently. It has been examined to what degree the living situation of elderly persons (either living independently or in a residential home) affects the degree of social functioning (as indicated by the size of the personal network, participation in voluntary organizations, outdoor mobility and loneliness), when the differences in need for care and background characteristics are taken into account. Respondents were 2523 older persons between 68 and 90 years of age, who took

A cross-country comparison of the impact of socioeconomic factors on household formation by young adults in the 15-24 age group is presented. "Of those young people living independently (not in their parental homes), how do incomes from various sources affect their decision whether to live alone or with others? The sample did not include all persons in the 15-24 age group, only those living independently. A logit analysis of the living alone question was conducted using data from five countries (Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States) incl

The objective of the June 2010 "Workshop on Personal Motions Technologies for Healthy Independent Living" was to discuss personal motion technologies that might enable older adults and individuals with disability to live independently for longer periods. The 60 participants included clinicians, academic researchers, engineers, patient advocates, caregivers, members of the public, and federal representatives. The workshop was divided into 6 sessions that addressed the following: (1) use of technologies in identifying early indicators of disease or adverse events; (2) monitoring daily activities

Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Of the 7 students, 5 also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (3 first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (4 young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leather-work tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional opera
