Regional photoprotection strategies in Indian Ocean phytoplankton: Arabian Sea vs South Tropical Indian Ocean responses to PAR/UVR stress.

Phytoplankton photoprotection is a key yet understudied determinant of marine ecosystem resilience to climate-driven environmental stressors, particularly in the Indian Ocean (IO), where observational constraints limit projections of productivity under warming and stratification. While photophysiological adaptation has been extensively characterised in Atlantic and Pacific systems, IO phytoplankton communities remain poorly resolved. We assessed the photophysiological responses of natural phytoplankton assemblages from two contrasting IO bioregions-the productive, monsoon-influenced Arabian Se

[Dengue, arbovirus and migrations in the Indian Ocean].

An arbovirus requires a competent haematophagous arthropod for transmission from one vertebrate to another susceptible host. Air transportations allow quick transfers from place to place and the diffusion of potential vectors or infectious hosts. The merchandise transportation by containers allowed the diffusion of Ae. albopictus from Asia through Africa and America. Emerging arbovirusis may occur in zones where they do not exist. Dengue which originally was located in southeastern Asia, is the most important arbovirusis in the world. The occurrence of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Asia a

Two distinct types of the Indian Ocean Dipole.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), traditionally defined by the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly gradient between the tropical western and eastern Indian Ocean, is revealed here to comprise two distinct types. Using multiple systematic approaches, including standard deviation analysis and SST mode combinations, we identify a western-eastern type and a central-eastern type, distinguished by their SST anomaly patterns, seasonal evolution, and feedback mechanisms. The western-eastern type reaches its peak later in boreal autumn due to a strong but delayed wind-thermocline-SST feedback, whereas t

West Nile virus infection in horses, Indian ocean.

The circulation of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses was investigated in the Southwest Indian ocean. In 2010, blood samples were collected from a total of 303 horses originating from Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles and tested for WNV-specific antibodies. An overall seroprevalence of 27.39% was detected in the Indian Ocean with the highest WNV antibody prevalence of 46.22% (95% CI: [37.4-55.2%]) in Madagascar. The age and origin of the horses were found to be associated with the WNV infection risk. This paper presents the first seroprevalence study investigating WN fever in hors

Travel-associated diseases, Indian Ocean Islands, 1997-2010.

Data collected by the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network for 1,415 ill travelers returning from Indian Ocean islands during 1997-2010 were analyzed. Malaria (from Comoros and Madagascar), acute nonparasitic diarrhea, and parasitoses were the most frequently diagnosed infectious diseases. An increase in arboviral diseases reflected the 2005 outbreak of chikungunya fever.

The natural history of chromoblastomycosis was studied in Madagascar by analysing the characteristics of 1323 confirmed cases observed since 1955, including 45 patients receiving a new antifungic drug (terbinafine) during a multicentric study organized in 1995. The surveys data, conserved by the histopathology laboratory in the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar during 40 years, permit this retrospective analysis. The description of two ecosystems, one in the North with Fonsecaea pedrosoi evolving in the tropical rainforest and one in the South with Cladophialophora carrionii (41% of the whole sam

[Historical epidemiology of malaria in the archipelago of the Mascarenes (Indian Ocean)].

The Mascarenes Islands (Mauritius, Rodrigues and Reunion) have been for the last few centuries a place of rest and convalescence for sailors, soldiers and inhabitants of the other regions of the Indian Ocean affected by "intermittent fevers". In the middle of the nineteenth century a severe and deadly malaria epidemic occurred first in Mauritius and then in Reunion Island. It took a century to bring the disease under control, but this has in no way diminished the risk of its re-introduction. Comparative study of the way the disease appeared and got established in these two islands and not in t

Indian Ocean temperature anomalies predict long-term global dengue trends.

Despite identifying El Niño events as a factor in dengue dynamics, predicting the oscillation of global dengue epidemics remains challenging. Here, we investigate climate indicators and worldwide dengue incidence from 1990 to 2019 using climate-driven mechanistic models. We identify a distinct indicator, the Indian Ocean basin-wide (IOBW) index, as representing the regional average of sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean. IOBW is closely associated with dengue epidemics for both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The ability of IOBW to predict dengue incidence lik

Angiostrongylus cantonensis Infection on Mayotte Island, Indian Ocean, 2007-2012.

INTRODUCTION: Human angiostrongyliasis (HA) is a neurological helminthic disease caused by the lung worm Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is suspected in the combination of travel or a residence in an endemic area and eosinophilic meningitis. In Mayotte, an island in the Indian Ocean, cases are rare but regular. The main objective of our study was to describe the epidemiological and diagnosis clues of HA in Mayotte. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the contribution of Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT- PCR) for the diagnosis of HA, delineate the characteristics of the local trans

Ticks and tick-borne diseases on southwestern Indian Ocean islands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases represent a growing global health concern, affecting both humans and animals, with an increasing number of disease outbreaks reported worldwide. On the southwestern Indian Ocean islands (SWIO)-including the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, La Réunion, Rodrigues and the Seychelles-the diversity of tick species and the pathogens they transmit remain poorly understood, posing a considerable impediment to improving public and animal health. METHODS: Here, we present the first comprehensive summary of tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens in the SWIO region

Case Report: Emergence of Candida auris in the Indian Ocean Region.

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast that can cause severe infections and spread easily between hospitalized patients, leading to outbreaks in hospital. Here, we report the first four cases of colonization and invasive infection with C. auris reported in the Indian Ocean region. All cases were observed in the French overseas Reunion Island, a very popular destination for European travelers. Three patients had urinary tract or skin colonization, and one had a fatal invasive infection. In three cases, including that of the infected patient, the yeast was not initially identifie

Forensic investigation of a suspicious fatality in the Indian Ocean: who is the culprit?

Recreational aquatic activities carry a significant risk of injury and fatality, with drowning being the primary cause of death. Although encounters with aquatic wildlife are usually accidental, they can occasionally result in severe stings or bites. Here, we present the case of a man in his early thirties who suddenly disappeared while swimming with seven others in the Gulf of Aden, just ten minutes after entering the water. Despite extensive search efforts, he could not be located. His body was recovered on the shore forty-eight hours later. The autopsy revealed a large, irregular, semicircu

[Historical epidemiology of bancroftian filariasis in southwest islands of the Indian Ocean].

Bancroftian filariasis arose in the South-West Indian Ocean Islands with human settlements. During the XIXe century, most of the islands were infected but the prevalence and clinical features of the disease were different from an Island to an other. The vectors are Cx. quinquefasciatus, An. gambiae, An. arabiensis, An. funestus. Even if Culex are proven vectors most of the transmission is due to anophelines. The introduction of the parasite was followed by an explosion of the diseases with dramatic clinical features. But since the beginning of the century the disease retreats. Whatever this is
