New data on the vision of South American Indians.

A total of 466 males and 437 females from four Brazilian Indian tribes were tested for color blindness with Ishihara's plates. Defective persons were found in three of the four tribes, but when these and other groups are considered the evidence suggests that the frequency of this trait is lower among Amerindians than among Caucasian populations. Visual acuity tests were performed on 296 Yanomama Indians. Their visual acuity was apparently not as sharp as that of the Cayapo or Xavante. But the scarcity among the Yanomama of persons with serious visual impairment of subcutaneous nodules suggests

High prevalence of simian foamy virus infection of South American Indians.

Simian foamy viruses (SFV) are retroviruses that widely infect nonhuman primates of New and Old-World origin and exhibit long-standing co-evolution with their hosts. Humans can acquire SFV from zoonotic exposures but are not known to be endemically infected and typically exhibit dead-end infections. South American Indian populations (Amerindians) historically have frequent contact with New World monkeys (NWM) and are endemically infected with the retrovirus human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) originally acquired before populating the Americas. We tested archived serum samples colle

Ethnic segregation of HTLV-I and HTLV-II carriers among South American native Indians.

To investigate the genetic background of human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) and II (HTLV-II) carriers among South American native Indians, we analyzed HLA DRB1*-DQB1* haplotypes of the virus carriers from Andes highlands and Orinoco lowlands by the PCR-RFLP genotyping method. It was revealed that the HTLV-I-carrying Andes natives had one of the 5 HLA haplotypes: DRB1*-DQB1* 0403-0302, 0802-0402, 0901-0303, 1406-0302 and 0407-0302, and that the Orinoco HTLV-II carriers had one of the 3 HLA haplotypes: DRB1*-DQB1* 1402-0301, 1602-0301 and 0404-0302. The HLA haplotypes of Andes HTLV-I ca

Knowledge and screening of head and neck cancer among American Indians in South Dakota.

OBJECTIVES: We established the level of awareness of risk factors and early symptoms of head and neck cancer among American Indians in South Dakota and determined whether head and neck cancer screening detected clinical findings in this population. METHODS: We used the European About Face survey. We added questions about human papillomavirus, a risk factor for head and neck cancer, and demographics. Surveys were administered at 2 public events in 2011. Participants could partake in a head and neck cancer screening at the time of survey administration. RESULTS: Of the 205 American Indians who

The prevalence of urinary incontinence in American Indian women from a South Dakota tribe.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the prevalence and associated risk factors for urinary incontinence in a Northern Plains tribe of American Indian women. METHODS: The Urogenital Distress Inventory-Short Form was used to assess urinary incontinence in a sample of American Indian women from one tribe. This was a cross-sectional convenience sampling of 234 eligible participants. Participant's ages ranged from 18 to 80 years. Stata/Se 9.1 software was used in statistical analysis. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of urinary stress incontinence was 15.4%

Spatial Epidemiology of Alcohol- and Drug-Related Health Problems Among Northern Plains American Indians: Nebraska and South Dakota, 2007 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Despite high abstinence rates, American Indians experience elevated rates of many alcohol and other drug problems. American Indians also predominantly reside in poor and rural areas, which may explain some observed health disparities. We investigated whether geographic areas including reservations or large American Indian populations exhibited greater incidence of alcohol- and drug-related hospitalizations. METHODS: We obtained inpatient hospitalization records for 2 Northern Plain states (Nebraska and South Dakota) for the years 2007 to 2012. We constructed zip code counts for 10

Doubling of New Hepatitis C Virus Infections in South Dakota American Indian Reservation Counties since 2020.

BACKGROUND: American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native individuals experience the highest hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection rates among racial groups in the United States. We hypothesized that, in South Dakota, six counties located on AI reservations might have a distinctive and underexamined epidemiologic pattern of HCV. METHODS: Using publicly available data from the South Dakota Department of Health, we analyzed rates of newly identified HCV cases in six reservation counties from 2015-2024. RESULTS: From 2015-2024, 1,282 HCV cases occurred in the six counties. These cases represented 19.6% of

Experience Implementing a Public Health Surveillance System Designed for Fathers of Infants on a South Dakota American Indian Reservation.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal behaviors and attitudes during pregnancy are not known. A health survey for fathers of recently born infants was developed to be administered concurrently with a maternal survey to assess parental behaviors and attitudes before, during and after pregnancy. METHODS: Participants were parents of 149 American Indian infants born from April 1 and Dec. 31, 2015 who were recruited prospectively from data of all births in prespecified reservation counties representing Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation. Data collection was via hard-copy or online survey.

Do Caucasian American and South Asian Indian cultural groups differ in sensitivity to capsaicin? A study designed to control for chili pepper affinity.

Although different cultural groups are known to vary in their tolerance for hot chili peppers, the influence of factors such as cultural background and upbringing on sensitivity to compounds in spicy food is unclear. A study was designed to investigate sensitivity differences to capsaicin between Caucasian American and South Asian Indian cultural groups while controlling for general chili pepper affinity. The two cultural groups were selected to match on metrics related to chili pepper use and liking. Subjects were exposed to a capsaicin (100 ppm) stimulus on the tongue, cheek, hard palate, an

Shifting Trends in Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer in South Dakota: A Focus on Population Incidence Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) is rising nationally, with South Dakota experiencing a reversal in historical trends. Traditionally, American Indian populations have had higher EOCRC rates attributed to healthcare access disparities and socioeconomic factors. Recent data now reveals that the White population exhibits higher EOCRC incidence in South Dakota. METHODS: We analyzed data from the South Dakota Cancer Registry (2007-2022) to calculate EOCRC incidence rates for American Indian and White populations. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were

Poor Survival for American Indians with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To examine patient characteristics, treatment modalities, and human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence to identify potential mediators of disparities that may lead to differences in outcomes for American Indians with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort study. SETTING: Community cancer centers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed all patients older than 18 years with a new diagnosis of HNSCC in South Dakota from 1999 to 2009. We assessed tissue samples from cases of oropharyngeal cancer for the presence of HPV DNA. RESULTS: In total, 474 whit

Comparative endocranial vascular changes due to craniosynostosis and artificial cranial deformation.

The processes of craniosynostosis (premature fusion of one or more of the calvarial sutures) and artificial cranial deformation are similar since both can alter the shape of the craniofacial complex. Most research exploring these processes has focused on the ectocranium, although it is obvious that these processes also modify the endocranium. Endocranial changes due to either craniosynostosis or artificial cranial deformation have not been as thoroughly examined. Silicone rubber endocasts were made from 11 craniosynostotic archaeologically derived specimens from North and South America. For co

Barriers of Female Breast, Colorectal, and Cervical Cancer Screening Among American Indians-Where to Intervene?

Female breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer are three common cancers among people in the United States. Both their incidence and mortality rates can be dramatically reduced if effective prevention and intervention programs are developed and implemented, because these cancers are preventable through regular screenings. American Indians in the United States especially in the Northern Plains have a disproportionally high burden of these cancers. As a hard-to-reach population group, less attention has been paid to American Indians regarding cancer screening compared with other population groups
