Gender differences among Indigenous Canadians experiencing homelessness and mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous people are over represented among homeless populations worldwide and the prevalence of Indigenous homelessness appears to be increasing in Canadian cities. Violence against Indigenous women in Canada has been widely publicized but has not informed the planning of housing interventions. Despite historical policies leading to disenfranchisement of Indigenous rights in gender-specific ways, little is known about contemporary differences in need between homeless Indigenous men and women. This study investigated mental health, substance use and service use among Indigenous pe

Non-Indigenous Canadians' and Americans' moral expectations of Indigenous peoples in light of the negative impacts of the Indian Residential Schools.

The historical trauma associated with the Indian Residential School (IRS) system was recently brought to the awareness of the Canadian public. Two studies investigated how the salience of this collective victimization impacted non-Indigenous Canadians' expectations that Indigenous peoples ought to derive psychological benefits (e.g., learned to appreciate life) and be morally obligated to help others. Study 1 found that modern racism was related to perceptions that Indigenous peoples psychologically benefitted from the IRS experience, which in turn, predicted greater expectations of moral obli

Disparities in Canadian indigenous health research on neurodevelopmental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To map the landscape of research on autism (ASD), cerebral palsy (CP), and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Canadian Aboriginal children. METHOD: The authors used a detailed search strategy to identify and access publications on ASD, CP, and FASD involving Canadian Aboriginal children, families, and communities from online databases. They analyzed these materials for the type of research, stated objectives, methodologies, and the level of engagement of Aboriginal Peoples. RESULTS: The authors found a total of 52 reports published since 1981 relevant to Aboriginal children

The Mental Health and Well-Being of Canadian Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Women Abused by Intimate Partners.

Intimate partner violence (IPV), mental health, disabilities, and child abuse history were examined for 292 Indigenous compared with 295 non-Indigenous Canadian women. IPV was assessed by the Composite Abuse Scale and mental health by the Symptom Checklist-10, Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression 10, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist, and Quality of Life Questionnaire. Scores did not differ nor were they in the clinical ranges for the two groups. In a MANCOVA on the mental health/well-being scales, with IPV severity as a covariate, only disability was significantly as

Indigenous housing and health in the Canadian North: Revisiting cultural safety.

In this article, I explore the relationship between housing, home and health amongst Indigenous homeless people living in the Canadian North. In particular, I examine the ways in which Indigenous homemaking practices conflict with housing policy, and exacerbate individual pathways to homelessness. I argue that integral components in northern Indigenous conceptualizations of home and, in turn, health are not only unrecognized in housing policy, but actively discouraged. The potential for homemaking to inform health and housing policy speaks to the relevance of cultural safety not only to Indige

Stochastic agent-based modeling of tuberculosis in Canadian Indigenous communities.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, active tuberculosis (TB) disease rates remain disproportionately higher among the Indigenous population, especially among the Inuit in the north. We used mathematical modeling to evaluate how interventions might enhance existing TB control efforts in a region of Nunavut. METHODS: We developed a stochastic, agent-based model of TB transmission that captured the unique household and community structure. Evaluated interventions included: (i) rapid treatment of active cases; (ii) rapid contact tracing; (iii) expanded screening programs for latent TB infection (LTBI); and (i

Bartonella quintana Endocarditis Associated With Head Lice in a Canadian Indigenous Youth.

Bartonella quintana is a rare but important cause of culture-negative endocarditis, classically associated with body lice infestation. We report the first known pediatric case of Bartonella quintana endocarditis associated with head lice. The importance of sending targeted testing for this organism in at-risk patients, ideally on tissue specimens, is emphasized.

Foodborne and waterborne illness among Canadian Indigenous populations: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous populations are often at higher risk for foodborne illness than the general Canadian population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent of the literature on the link between food safety and the occurrence of foodborne and waterborne illness in Canadian Indigenous populations. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using search strings in five databases and grey literature to identify all papers that studied a Canadian Indigenous population and referred to any potential associations between food safety (including consumption and preparation of traditional foods and retai

Canadian dietetic education and training actions to support Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation.

OBJECTIVES: The paper describes activities of dietetic education and training programs within Canada to advance Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation. METHODS: A self-administered 34-question cross-sectional, online survey was distributed to all Canadian dietetic education and training programs, and available February-May 2022. A matrix question examined key actions and scope at program and/or institutional levels, while question logic and open-ended feedback options supported further description. Additional open-ended questions explored respondents' perspectives on perceived bar

Is aspiration during swallowing more common in Canadian children with indigenous heritage?

While many factors that contribute to the occurrence of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in Canadian indigenous children have been described, the role of aspiration during swallowing has not been explored in these children. Because of an increase in referrals of indigenous children from our catchment area (Manitoba, North Western Ontario, and Nunavut) for assessment of aspiration during swallowing, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 325 consecutive children undergoing videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) to evaluate which factors, including indigenous heritage

Prevalence, Correlates, and Sequelae of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) among Indigenous Canadians: Intersections of Ethnicity, Gender, and Socioeconomic Status.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a severe and concerning public-health problem globally, but some children are at higher risk of experiencing it. The harms caused by colonization and particularly the inter-generational legacy of residential schools would presumably increase the vulnerability of Indigenous children in former British colonies. Among 282 Indigenous participants in Canada recruited from Prime Panels, CSA was reported by 35% of boys, 50% of girls, and 57% of trans and gender non-conforming participants. These rates are substantially higher than global meta-analytic estimates (7.6% of bo

Identifying Canadian radiation therapy resources for Indigenous cultural safety: A national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Specific training and resources for radiation therapists (RTs) are critical to ensuring the provision of culturally safe care for Indigenous patients in Canada. Despite the importance of this area, comprehensive national data is lacking regarding the specific cultural safety training and resources available to Canadian RTs. This study aimed to investigate the current breadth and characteristics of training and resources available for Canadian RTs to deliver culturally safe and appropriate care to Indigenous patients. METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed to approximately

Unravelling Suicide and Related Behaviours in Indigenous Youth and Young Adults in the Canadian Context.

Suicide, rooted in antiquity, is now identified as a global dilemma, particularly impacting Indigenous peoples. The backdrop for this non-systematic focused review is the worldwide challenges faced by vulnerable Indigenous peoples with untenable poverty, degraded life-quality conditions, and suicidality, while the focus, as a specific case, is on the complexity of suicidality in Canadian Indigenous high-risk age groups. The aim here is to present overt and covert intersecting factors underlying suicide in Indigenous youths and young adults in the vast Canadian context. Although living in a pri

Massive gallstone in an asymptomatic Indigenous Canadian male: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Gallstones are present in 10-15% of North Americans, but only 20% become symptomatic. This case report describes a patient with a 7.5 cm gallstone detected incidentally while being investigated for cardiac pathology. This is the first report in the English literature of a stone this size that has remained clinically asymptomatic. This work is reported in line with the SCARE criteria. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 71-year-old Indigenous Canadian male, with atrial fibrillation. His cardiologist ordered a CT scan of his chest, which incidentally identified a large gallstone. He wa

Future Impacts of Hydroelectric Power Development on Methylmercury Exposures of Canadian Indigenous Communities.

Developing Canadian hydroelectric resources is a key component of North American plans for meeting future energy demands. Microbial production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) is stimulated in newly flooded soils by degradation of labile organic carbon and associated changes in geochemical conditions. We find all 22 Canadian hydroelectric facilities being considered for near-term development are located within 100 km of indigenous communities. For a facility in Labrador, Canada (Muskrat Falls) with planned completion in 2017, we probabilistically modeled peak MeHg enrichm

Intravenous Drug Use in the Hospital Setting: Advancing Reconciliation for Indigenous Canadians Using In-Hospital Harm Reduction and Culturally Safe Care.

People who inject drugs are likely to end up admitted to a hospital due to complications associated with substance use. While in hospital, many of these patients will continue the self-administration of nonprescribed drugs. When implemented without a harm reduction approach, self-administration can lead to an increase in the acquisition of infectious diseases, injection-related infections, and fatal and nonfatal overdoses. Often, administrators and providers use punitive approaches to manage this behavior among patients and providers. This abstinence-based approach has, and continues to, dispr

Indigenous and non-Indigenous people experiencing homelessness and mental illness in two Canadian cities: A retrospective analysis and implications for culturally informed action.

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous people in Canada are not only over-represented among the homeless population but their pathways to homelessness may differ from those of non-Indigenous people. This study investigated the history and current status of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people experiencing homelessness and mental illness. We hypothesised that compared with non-Indigenous people, those who are Indigenous would demonstrate histories of displacement earlier in life, higher rates of trauma and self-medication with alcohol and other substances. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective data were collected

Foundations of Canadian Indigenous Medicine (Part III): Treatment Approaches for Common Dermatological Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada face significant dermatological health care disparities due to systemic barriers, geographic isolation, and limited access to specialists. These challenges are further exacerbated by numerous socio-economic factors. Addressing these issues requires policy reforms, Indigenous-led health care initiatives, and the recognition of traditional natural-based remedies as valuable contributors to improve health outcomes, mutual trust, and patient compliance. METHODOLOGY: A detailed literature review was conducted using PubMed and the Native American Ethnobo
