Drug Policy and Indigenous Peoples.

This paper identifies the principal concerns of indigenous peoples with regard to current international treaties on certain psychoactive substances and policies to control and eradicate their production, trafficking, and sale. Indigenous peoples have a specific interest in the issue since their traditional lands have become integrated over time into the large-scale production of coca, opium poppy, and cannabis crops, in response to high demand from the American and European markets, among others. As a consequence, indigenous peoples are persecuted because of their traditional use of these and

Rheumatic diseases in North America's indigenous peoples.

OBJECTIVES: There are at least 3 million North American Indians and Eskimos in North America. The epidemiology of rheumatic diseases in Native North Americans differs from that described for the remainder of the North American population. An enhanced understanding of rheumatic diseases in these indigenous people may provide valuable clues to the cause of these disorders and improve rheumatologic care. METHODS: The world literature was searched for all reports of rheumatic diseases in North American Indians and Eskimos. The reports were reviewed and the findings summarized by disease process.

Rheumatic heart disease in Indigenous young peoples.

Indigenous children and young peoples live with an inequitable burden of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. In this Review, we focus on the epidemiological burden and lived experience of these conditions for Indigenous young peoples in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. We outline the direct and indirect drivers of rheumatic heart disease risk and their mitigation. Specifically, we identify the opportunities and limitations of predominantly biomedical approaches to the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of disease among Indigenous peoples. We explain why these biomedi

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples and the Interpersonal Victimization Experiences of Indigenous Peoples: A Strengths-Based Focus on Resilience.

This study draws upon original survey (n = 95) and interview (n = 16) data with mostly female Indigenous Peoples attending college to identify protective factors associated with resilience in the aftermath of interpersonal victimization and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP). Many participants experienced at least one form of victimization (82%), nearly all (94%) were aware of MMIP, and the majority had personally known a friend, family, or community member who had gone missing or been murdered (85%). Interview results revealed that MMIP had serious psychological and social impacts

Surgical Outcomes in Indigenous Peoples Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in indigenous peoples, however cardiac surgical outcomes in this group are rarely studied. We hypothesized that complication rates in indigenous peoples undergoing cardiac surgery would be similar to Caucasians. METHODS: From 2014 to 2020, 1,594 patients underwent cardiac surgery; 36 patients were identified as indigenous peoples. Risk factors, intraoperative, and postoperative variables were abstracted from our institution's database. We used the variables of age, BMI, diabetes, and tobacco use to propensity match the indigenous peopl

Reparations for Indigenous Peoples in the USA and Canada.

Indigenous populations comprise some 400 million people worldwide, hailing from 5,000 descent communities. Although contemporary Indigenous Peoples are exceedingly diverse, they frequently share brutal histories of colonization. These histories of subjugation by outsiders have yielded catastrophic impacts on Indigenous health and well-being, including marked inequities in health status. Specifically, Indigenous communities often suffer from disproportionately high rates of infant and maternal mortality, infectious diseases, parasite loads, diseases of forced acculturation (such as diabetes and

Health survivance: Decolonizing resilience for indigenous peoples in psychology.

Behavioral health inequity for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), stemming distally from histories of colonization and continual subjugation, is a challenge that has largely evaded mainstream psychological solutions. Eurocentric psychology conceptualizes the contemporary AI/AN behavioral health environment in terms of compounded trauma balanced at times by remarkable instances of resilience. Decolonized approaches to psychology require a paradigm shift away from approaches that uphold Eurocentric ideals of behavioral health. Resilience, despite its use by minoritized populations glo

Bridging the divide between genomic science and indigenous peoples.

The new science of genomics endeavors to chart the genomes of individuals around the world, with the dual goals of understanding the role genetic factors play in human health and solving problems of disease and disability. From the perspective of indigenous peoples and developing countries, the promises and perils of genomic science appear against a backdrop of global health disparity and political vulnerability. These conditions pose a dilemma for many communities when attempting to decide about participating in genomic research or any other biomedical research. Genomic research offers the po

Sleep problems among Indigenous peoples: Scoping review and global perspectives.

Indigenous communities face disparities in sleep outcomes, which may contribute to broader health inequities. Existing reviews of Indigenous sleep health adopt a regional focus or limit attention to specific sleep disorders. The objective of this scoping review was to describe patterns of sleep problems and sleep health in Indigenous peoples globally. MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from inception to February 25, 2025. Any studies that described the prevalence of a sleep problem in an Indigenous sample were included. A total of 47 studies were included in the review, with sam

Advancing brain health equity with Indigenous peoples: A critical imperative.

Indigenous communities hold rich knowledges, cultural practices, and kinship networks that sustain cognitive resilience and nurture brain health across the life course. Yet these enduring strengths are often obscured by biomedical models that overlook the structural determinants of health-including the cumulative effects of colonization, educational inequity, and socioeconomic disadvantage-that diminish brain health. Accordingly, dementia disproportionately affects Indigenous populations globally, often presenting with earlier onset and higher prevalence compared to non-Indigenous groups. This

Ethnomycology of the Guajajara indigenous peoples of Maranhão, Northeast Brazil.

The Brazilian Cerrado harbors a rich diversity of traditional communities, including several Indigenous peoples. Among them are the Guajajara, who inhabit regions extending from the state of Maranhão to the northeastern portion of Pará. Considering the importance of research into ethnomycological knowledge in indigenous communities for the preservation of culture and the environment, especially in relation to macrofungi, the aim of this study was to document and compile the uses of macrofungi by the original Guajajara peoples to evaluate and revitalize traditional knowledge among indigenous ge

Reduced nephron endowment in the neonates of Indigenous Australian peoples.

Rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Indigenous groups in Australia exceed non-Indigenous rates eight-fold. Using kidney volume as a surrogate for nephron number, we carried out a study to determine if Indigenous neonates have a smaller kidney volume (and thus a reduced nephron number) from birth compared with non-Indigenous neonates. We recruited term and preterm neonates (<32 weeks) at a tertiary care neonatal unit over a 12 months period. Preterm neonates were assessed (renal sonography and renal function measurement) at 32 weeks corrected age (CA) and again at 38 weeks CA when blood

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence indicates that Indigenous peoples experience disproportionately high rates of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This systematic review aimed to examine OSA prevalence, contributing factors, and intervention or treatment outcomes among Indigenous peoples worldwide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, ATSI Health, Web of Science and PsycINFO (last searched June 30, 2025), and grey literature for original research involving Indigenous peoples (≥18 years) diagnosed with OSA via self-report or laboratory-based

Sexual abuse, residential schooling and probable pathological gambling among Indigenous Peoples.

Sexual abuse leads to short-term and long-lasting pervasive outcomes, including addictions. Among Indigenous Peoples, sexual abuse experienced in the context of residential schooling may have led to unresolved grief that is contributing to social problems, such as pathological (disordered) gambling. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between child sexual abuse, residential schooling and probable pathological gambling. The participants were 358 Indigenous persons (54.2% women) aged between 18 and 87 years, from two communities and two semi-urban centers in Quebec (Canada). Probabl
