OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical data of very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) and extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWIs) (birth weight ≤1 200 g) and to provide prewarning indicators for prognostic evaluation and clinical intervention.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 108 VLBWIs and ELBWIs to investigate the maternal history of diseases during pregnancy, neonatal birth status, the process of diagnosis and treatment, and prognosis. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to determine prognostic factors.
RESULTS: Of the 108 preterm inf

BACKGROUND: Very low birth weight (VLBW ≤ 1,500g] infants represent approximately 1% of all live births in Israel but are responsible for about 45% of all infant deaths and account for 45% of all hospitalization days in the neonatal special and intensive care units (NICU's).
AIM: To identify perinatal and neonatal factors associated with mortality, morbidity and handicap among VLBW infants.
METHODS: Since 1995 data for > 99% of VLBW infants were received from all 27 NICU's in Israel. The data includes maternal obstetric history, infant's status at birth, deaths, major neonatal morbidities an

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether known maternal risk factors for low birth weight directly contribute to infant mortality among very low birth weight infants.
DESIGN: Retrospective population-based, case-control study.
SETTING: Four hospitals in the Oakland, California, area: one community, two private, one health maintenance organization.
PARTICIPANTS: All live-born singleton very low birth weight ( < 1500 g) infants born to Oakland residents over a 3-year period. Cases were infants who died before their first birthday, identified by computerized linkage of birth and death certificates. For

The incidence of lethal, serious and trivial malformations was determined in a consecutive series of 675 infants who weightd 1500 g or less (very low birth weight infants). All patients were born in one maternity hospital. Most of the 169 survivors were followed until at least five years of age. Of these children, 15 had a trivial malformation that either disappeared spontaneously or was corrected surgically. A further five children have a significant or serious residual defect. There were 506 perinatal and infant deaths and 51 of the babies who died had malformations confirmed at necropsy. In

Preterm infants, especially very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) infants, are susceptible to growth failure in postnatal life if nutritional demands are not met. Poor postnatal growth in preterm infants is associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes during childhood. Early parental nutrition is of paramount importance to provide appropriate protein and energy in VLBW infants when enteral nutrition is not feasible or is suboptimal. An "early and aggressive" approach of parenteral nutrition in preterm infants has been shown to prevent prote

This review describes current understandings about the nature of the very low birth weight infant (VLBW) gut microbiome. VLBW infants often experience disruptive pregnancies and births, and prenatal factors can influence the maturity of the gut and immune system, and disturb microbial balance and succession. Many VLBWs experience rapid vaginal or Caesarean births. After birth these infants often have delays in enteral feeding, and many receive little or no mother's own milk. Furthermore the stressors of neonatal life in the hospital environment, common use of antibiotics, invasive procedures a

Meconium obstruction of prematurity is a distinct clinical condition that occurs in very low birth weight infants, predisposing them to intestinal perforation and a prolonged hospitalization if not diagnosed and treated promptly. We report a series of 21 infants, including 2 detailed case reports, whose clinical course is indicative of meconium obstruction of prematurity. Specific risk factors are identified along with descriptions of clinical and radiologic findings, disease course, treatment, and outcome. Meconium obstruction of prematurity was more common in infants with a maternal history

Ten critically ill, very low birth weight infants less than 30 weeks' gestation were treated with exogenous insulin administered through a continuous insulin infusion pump (Betatron II, Cardiac Pacemaker, Inc). Infants were hyperglycemic to dextrose infusions greater than 6 mg/kg/min. The blood glucose concentration became normal in all infants within two to four hours, with varying requirements for continued insulin treatment. Tolerance to intravenous dextrose increased from a mean of 7.4 mg/kg/min to 11.2 mg/kg/min with glycosuria. Energy intake increased from 49.5 calories/kg/d prior to ins

In this case study two combined, light-general and lumbar epidural anesthetics were administered to a premature neonate for the repair of gastroschisis. The female infant's body weight was 1400 grams (first operation) and 1700 grams (second operation). The epidural catheter was inserted between the low-lumbar vertebrae using the "loss of resistance" for saline technique. Intra- and postoperative analgesia were based on epidural administration of bupivacaine and fentanyl. No systemic opioids were administered. The infant recovered from general anesthesia at the end of both operations. Excellent

OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors and treatment outcome of hypothyroidism in very low birth weight/extremely low birth weight (VLBW/ELBW) infants.
METHODS: The VLBW/ELBW infants who were diagnosed with hypothyroidism from September 2018 to December 2019 were enrolled as the case group (n=29). The children with normal thyroid function, matched at a ratio of 1 : 3, were enrolled as the control group (n=87). Clinical features were compared between the two groups. The correlation of thyroid function with gestational age and birth weight and the risk factors for hypothyroidism were analyzed.

The perinatal period is critical for human development. The brain of very low birth weight (VLBW, <1,500 g) infants is particularly vulnerable to undernutrition. Enteral nutrition is of major importance for the growth and the development of the gastrointestinal tract, which depends on the amount and composition of feeds. Feeding intolerance and the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are key concerns with enteral nutrition in VLBW infants. Controversies exist on how to feed VLBW infants during the first weeks of life, particularly in extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1,000 g) infants. Unr

We aimed to assess the prevalence and outcomes of esophageal perforation in very low birth weight infants. This retrospective cohort study utilized the US National Inpatient Sample dataset for the years 2000 to 2017. A total of 1,755,418 very low birth weight infants were included; of them, 861 (0.05%) were diagnosed with esophageal perforation. The majority (77.9%) of infants were in the birth weight category < 1000 g and 77.7% in infants ≤ 28 weeks of gestation. The majority (73%) of infants were tracheally intubated and received mechanical ventilation; of them, 24 infants (2.8%) had tracheo

OBJECTIVE: The developments in newborn care have enabled many more very low birth weight premature infants to live. The aim of our study was to determine the risk factors for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) development by evaluating mild and moderate/severe BPD in extramural neonates with a birth weight <1501 g.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted between January 1, 2004- December 31, 2006 at the Dr. Sami Ulus Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Patients with BPD and without BPD were compared. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia was diagnosed and classified according to the Banc

Extremely preterm infants are at risk for neurodevelopmental problems and the visual system is particularly vulnerable. However, development of visual function in preterm infants with little or no retinal or neurologic injury has not been well defined. This study compared development of visual function in preterm infants without severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) to that of term infants at 5-7 mo corrected age. Twenty-one very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants (24-32 wk gestational age, weighing < 1500 g), and

Retained meconium resulting in intestinal obstruction in infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) may cause significant morbidity and even mortality. Immature intestinal neuromuscular function, abnormal meconium composition, and maternal magnesium sulfate therapy results in delay of first meconium passage. This "normal" passage of first meconium may not occur until 1 week of life or later. A spectrum of conditions results from this delayed passage. At the most serious end of this continuum is intestinal obstruction. These patients present with abdominal distension, emesis, and reduced stool f

Infants with esophageal atresia (EA), with or without a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) frequently are of low birth weight. With advances in neonatal, respiratory, surgical, and anesthetic care, more infants with very low birth weight (VLBW; birth weight less than 1.5 kg) are surviving. The therapy of the VLBW neonate with EA is not longer automatically staged. Primary or delayed primary anastomosis can be performed safely if the patient is stable. This report will review the epidemiology, pathophysiology, treatment, and prognosis of EA in VLBW infants. The authors present their own experience

A population-based multicentre study, comprising all very low birthweight (VLBW; < or = 1,500 g) infants born alive in the south-east region of Sweden during a 15-month period, was performed in the late 1980s. Among the VLBW infants there were 107 lifebirths (a rate of 0.72%), 86 (80.4%) neonatal survivors and no late deaths. Twenty (18.4%) had intracranial complications, two (2.3%) retinopathy of prematurity, grade 3, and six (5.6%) bronchopulmonary dysplasia. At follow-up at 18 months of uncorrected age, the VLBW infants were still lighter in weight and of shorter stature than control group
