Infant Neuromotor Development and Childhood Problem Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Research of adults and school-aged children suggest a neurodevelopmental basis for psychiatric disorders. We examined whether infant neuromotor development predicted internalizing and externalizing problems in young children. METHODS: In Generation R, a population-based cohort in the Netherlands (2002-2006), trained research assistants evaluated the neuromotor development of 4006 infants aged 2 to 5 months by using an adapted version of Touwen's Neurodevelopmental Examination (tone, responses, and senses and other observations). We defined nonoptimal neuromotor development as scor

Infant feeding behavior: development in patterns and motivation.

Studies of feeding behaviors in human infants not only provide normative data but also allow analyses of the behavioral regulation. Twenty healthy full-term infants were observed by two examiners and were audiovisually and polygraphically recorded under standard conditions at 2, 10, 18, and 26 weeks of age prior to, during, and after breast- or bottle-feeding. The parameters of sucking, breathing and swallowing significantly changed during the first 6 months of age. At 2 weeks, infants were alert and visually attentive during sucking. Breast-fed infants had more opportunities for intimate soci

FEBRILE CONVULSIONS IN INFANT RATS, AND LATER BEHAVIOR.

At 3 days of age, rats were (i) subjected to a febrile convulsion, or (ii) were handled, or (iii) were not handled. Evaluation at 30 days of age revealed that animals in the first group were heaviest and most resistant to audiogenic seizure stimuli. No differerences were found in maze-learning ability or activity level.

Observed infant food cue responsivity: Associations with maternal report of infant eating behavior, breastfeeding, and infant weight gain.

Infant obesity and the rate of weight gain during infancy are significant public health concerns, but few studies have examined eating behaviors in infancy. Food cue responsivity has been described as a key contributor to obesity risk in school age children and adults, but has been rarely examined during infancy. The purpose of the current study was to test among 30 infants aged 6-12 months the hypotheses that infants would show greater interest in food versus non-food stimuli, and that greater birth weight, greater rate of weight gain during infancy, greater mother-reported food responsivenes

Birth timing and the mother-infant relationship predict variation in infant behavior and physiology.

The current study explored whether birth timing, known to influence the mother-infant relationship, also affected infant physiology up to 9 months later and infant behavior at weaning. Infant blood samples were collected at 5.75 and 8.75 months of age to assess functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis as well as the antibody response to a Cholera vaccination. Path analysis indicated infants born late in the birth season had less Relaxed relationships with their mothers. A less-Relaxed relationship was associated with greater infant Positive Engagement and Distress, which were neg

Development and application of the infant behavior observation scale.

This study aimed to develop a culturally localized Infant Behavior Observation (IBO) scale for Chinese infants aged 0-12 months and to validate its reliability and validity for the early identification of atypical behavioral development. Following standardized scale development procedures, a total of 1280 infants from five provincial regions across China were enrolled. Initial scale items were generated through interviews and refined via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The final version of the IBO scale consists of 36 items covering five core dimensions: social behavior, emotiona

Respiratory behavior in near-miss sudden infant death syndrome.

Seventeen infants with unexplained prolonged apnea that has been designated near-miss sudden infant death syndrome were monitored for sleep and cardiorespiratory variables during a 12-hour, all-night recording session. Infants were matched for gestational age, sex, and age at recording with control infants. Respiratory variables studied included respiratory rate, respiratory variability, apnea duration, apnea density, and periodic breathing. No statistically significant differences were found in sleep state or respiratory variables between near-miss and control infants. Eight infants (47%) had

Vitamin B-6 status of Egyptian mothers: relation to infant behavior and maternal-infant interactions.

Functional consequences of marginal maternal vitamin B-6 status for behavior of the neonate and for mother-infant interactions at age 3-6 mo were assessed by a double-blind procedure. In 27 of 70 Egyptian village women studied, vitamin B-6 concentration of their milk was considered indicative of poor maternal vitamin B-6 nutriture. Neonatal behavior, quantified by the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, showed that consolability, appropriate build-up to a crying state, and response to aversive stimuli were significantly correlated with maternal vitamin B-6 nutriture. Naturalistic o

Behavioral tagging in infant rats.

Recent studies have shown that exposure to a novel environment may stabilize the persistence of weak memories, a phenomenon often attributed to a process referred to as "behavioral tagging." While this phenomenon has been repeatedly demonstrated in adult animals, no studies to date have examined whether it occurs in infant animals, which is surprising given that infants exhibit an impaired ability to form long-term memories (LTMs). In the present study, infant (i.e., postnatal day (P) 17) rats were placed in a context and repeatedly shocked. Infant rats given brief open field exposure 1 h, but

Relationships Between NICU Infant Stressors and Childhood Behavior and Development.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants face many stressful experiences in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Critical aspects of brain growth and development may be affected by stressor exposure. Longer term neurodevelopmental effects may result. PURPOSE: The aims were to examine relationships between NICU stressor scores and childhood behavior and neurodevelopment at 4 years of age in a cohort of preterm infants. METHODS: We measured daily stress events with the Neonatal Infant Stress Scale (NISS) in 83 preterm infants over the first 6 weeks of life. Twenty-five of these children were followed u

Advancing Wrist-Worn Accelerometry for Measurement of Infant Motor Behavior.

Wearable sensor technology, particularly accelerometry, is an emerging tool to measure infant motor behavior. We evaluated (1) differences and relationships between accelerometry-derived variables in structured versus unstructured contexts and (2) the convergent validity of accelerometer-derived variables with coded motor behavior during structured motor tasks and with caregiver reports of infant motor behavior. Typically developing infants (n = 176, 6 months adjusted age) were evaluated via bilateral wrist-worn accelerometers during structured, laboratory toy play tasks and at home for 2 days

Music of infant-directed singing entrains infants' social visual behavior.

Infant-directed singing is a culturally universal musical phenomenon known to promote the bonding of infants and caregivers. Entrainment is a widely observed physical phenomenon by which diverse physical systems adjust rhythmic activity through interaction. Here we show that the simple act of infant-directed singing entrains infant social visual behavior on subsecond timescales, increasing infants' looking to the eyes of a singing caregiver: as early as 2 months of age, and doubling in strength by 6 months, infants synchronize their eye-looking to the rhythm of infant-directed singing. Rhythmi

Infant learning forms lasting memory schemas that influence adult behavior.

Early-life episodic experiences, despite seeming rapidly forgotten, are stored long-term in a latent form. The contribution of this unique hidden memory storage is not understood. Here, we show that contextual memories formed in infant mice are recovered in adulthood following weak behavioral reminders (savings) of the infantile experience. Savings in adults also facilitates new congruent learning but fails to influence other types of hippocampus-dependent learning, and this facilitation is a developmental prerogative. Both infant memory reinstatement and facilitation of new learning in adults

Frightening maternal behavior linking unresolved loss and disorganized infant attachment.

Main and Hesse's (1990) model in which frightening (threatening, frightened, or dissociated) parental behavior explains why infants of parents with unresolved loss develop disorganized attachment relationships was tested. Unresolved loss using the Adult Attachment Interview in a nonclinical middle-class sample of 85 mothers who had experienced the loss of someone important was assessed. Disorganized attachment was examined in the Strange Situation. Parental behavior was recorded during 22-hr home visits. The model applied to mothers with currently insecure attachment representations. Secure mo

The relationship of obstetric ultrasound to parent and infant behavior.

There is inconsistency in the obstetric literature regarding the relationship between the mother's knowledge of fetal health gained by ultrasound and maternal psychological attachment to the fetus. To evaluate the relationship more precisely, this study assessed variables of physician-patient interaction, parental mental health in pregnancy and infancy, and 3-month infant and parent behavior. The results show that maternal mental health scores increased as a function of the stress associated with an "at risk" pregnancy necessitating ultrasound assessment. As the parent received more definitive

Behavioral states of premature infants: implications for neural and behavioral development.

Nine premature and 28 full-term infants were observed in their homes for 7 hr when they were 2, 3, 4, and 5 weeks post-term, and the sleeping and waking states displayed by these infants were compared. For these comparisons, the observation day was divided into two mutually exclusive contexts: times when the baby was alone and times when the baby was with the mother. The premature infants spent more time alone (mean of 5.4 hr a day) than the full-terms (4.6 hr). Over the total 7-hr day, the premature infants spent more time in alert, nonalert waking activity, and sleep-wake transition than the

Adding objectivity to infant behavioral audiometry.

This article deals with the limitations of infant behavioral audiometry, which have led us to seek objective methods of audiometry for determining hearing sensitivity in infants. It describes efforts to add objectivity to (or reduce the subjectivity of) behavioral methods of infant audiometry. Several aspects of visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA), including the head turn response, the use of control trials, and adherence to the principles of operant conditioning, serve to reduce the subjectivity inherent in behavior observation audiometry. In addition, computer control of VRA procedures can

The behavior of jaundiced infants undergoing phototherapy.

Ten full-term jaundiced infants were examined with the Brazelton Scale before, during and following phototherapy. They were compared with 10 non-jaundiced control infants examined at the same post-partum ages. All infants were appropriate for gestational age and free of perinatal complications other than hyperbilirubinemia. Differences on the orienting items of the Brazelton examinations (primarily visual orienting) were found prior to the onset of phototherapy or separation, and persisted for the length of the study. The greatest over-all differences were noted during phototherapy and separat
