FOOD NEGLECT AND INFANT DEVELOPMENT.

The impact of food insecurity on child development in the general U.S. population is well-established, yet little is known about the harm of food neglect relative to other types of maltreatment. Due to the harmful physiological impact of inadequate nutrients and the social impact of food-related stress, it was hypothesized that food neglect would be more likely to impair infant cognitive and language development than physical abuse, sexual abuse, and other forms of neglect. Families of infants (N = 1,951) investigated by Child Protective Services were studied using the second cohort of the Nat

Household Food Security and Infant Adiposity.

OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity has been associated with obesity, but previous studies are inconsistent and few included infants. We examined associations between household food security and infant adiposity and assessed the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as effect modifiers. We hypothesized that infants from food-insecure households would have greater adiposity, with attenuation by WIC and SNAP. METHODS: We repeatedly measured 666 infants from the southeastern United States in 2013-2017. We catego

Infant food allergy: where are we now?

For many years, the prevailing maxim for prevention of food allergy in at-risk infants was to reduce allergic sensitization by avoiding exposure to highly allergenic foods until the baby's immune and digestive systems were sufficiently developed to cope with the allergen. Current thinking is completely different: exposure to food in the early stages of development may be the way to induce tolerance. Exclusive breastfeeding until 4-6 months, followed by introduction of complementary foods individually, is recommended. Any restrictions on mother's diet, other than avoidance of her own allergens

Food-chemical intolerance in the breastfed infant.

Adverse food reactions can be caused by a wide range of foods and the reactions vary widely too. Lactation consultants and other health professionals should look for causes of infant symptoms associated with less than optimal breastfeeding management and rule out medical issues before assuming adverse food reactions are involved. The investigation of adverse food reactions can be complex and ideally should be guided and monitored by a dietitian experienced in the field. Maternal elimination diets require high motivation and must include all important nutrients.

Application of prebiotics in infant foods.

The rationale for supplementing an infant formula with prebiotics is to obtain a bifidogenic effect and the implied advantages of a 'breast-fed-like' flora. So far, the bifidogenic effect of oligofructose and inulin has been demonstrated in animals and in adults, of oligofructose in infants and toddlers and of a long-chain inulin (10 %) and galactooligosaccharide (90 %) mixture in term and preterm infants. The addition of prebiotics to infant formula softens stools but other putative effects remain to be demonstrated. Studies published post marketing show that infants fed a long-chain inulin/g

ASCIA Guideline: Infant Feeding for Food Allergy Prevention.

BACKGROUND: The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) Guideline: Infant Feeding for Food Allergy Prevention is an update of the 2016 ASCIA guideline. This updated guideline provides recommendations specifically in relation to infant feeding for food allergy prevention. METHODS: A review of the guideline began in 2024, informed by a systematic evidence review process and using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II (AGREE II) framework. Where evidence was lacking, a formal Delphi process was used to develop recommendations based on expert consensus.

Food questionnaire for assessment of infant gluten consumption.

BACKGROUND: In light of the possibly preventive role of timing and amount of gluten in celiac disease, it would be helpful to have a questionnaire to assess the gluten intake in infants. AIMS: Development and validation of a food questionnaire to assess gluten consumption in healthy infants aged 0-12 months (FQ-gluten). METHODS: A food frequency questionnaire, previously developed for the Generation R study, was adapted for the assessment of gluten intake. The results of a 2-day food record (FR) were compared with the results of this FQ-gluten. RESULTS: Eighty-seven parents filled in the FR

The infant food industry and international child health.

Declining breast-feeding, with accompanying increased marasmus and diarrhea, has occurred in developing countries because of many factors, including inappropriate health services, new urban life styles, and so forth. The infant food industry must bear a considerable burden of blame as a result of "unethical" advertising. Responses have most recently included various journalistic and legal actions. There is a need for revised roles for the infant food industry, and for mechanisms to monitor intrinsically harmful practices.

Anatomical Distribution of Infant Eczema Predicts Food Allergy and Food Sensitization in Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Infant eczema is associated with food allergy (FA), but whether the anatomical distribution of eczema influences the risk remains unclear. Skin sites with frequent allergen exposure may confer higher FA and sensitization risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between eczema location at age 9 months and physician-diagnosed FA and food sensitization at age 18 months. METHODS: This large population-based prospective study included 4456 children from the NorthPop Birth Cohort Study in Sweden. Parent-reported eczema location at age 9 months was categorized as body only, head/nec

Observed infant food cue responsivity: Associations with maternal report of infant eating behavior, breastfeeding, and infant weight gain.

Infant obesity and the rate of weight gain during infancy are significant public health concerns, but few studies have examined eating behaviors in infancy. Food cue responsivity has been described as a key contributor to obesity risk in school age children and adults, but has been rarely examined during infancy. The purpose of the current study was to test among 30 infants aged 6-12 months the hypotheses that infants would show greater interest in food versus non-food stimuli, and that greater birth weight, greater rate of weight gain during infancy, greater mother-reported food responsivenes

Frey's syndrome in an infant misdiagnosed as food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Frey's syndrome (auriculotemporal syndrome) is characterized by gustatory flushing and sweating in the distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve. Although classically described after parotid surgery in adults, congenital and idiopathic forms are increasingly recognized in infants. Because symptoms occur during feeding, the condition can closely mimic IgE-mediated food allergy, leading to unnecessary dietary restrictions and anxiety. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an 8-month-old boy referred for evaluation of suspected multiple food allergies after several emergency department visit

Food and environmental aspects of infant botulism in California.

In an effort to identify vehicles by which Clostridium botulinum spores might have reached the intestine of patients with infant botulism, 555 samples of foods, drugs, and environmental specimens were examined. Of the food items, C. botulinum was only found in nine of 90 (10%) honey specimens. Five patients had been exposed to honey that contained C. botulinum, and ingestion of honey was found to be a significant risk factor for type B infant botulism (P = 0.005). In addition, C. botulinum was isolated from five samples of soil (three from case homes, two from control homes) and from vacuum cl

Navigating infant food insecurity: low-income parents infant feeding intentions and practices in the UK.

Food insecurity is increasingly being recognised as a public health issue in high income countries, exacerbated for many by the recent cost-of-living crisis. High food prices mean many households, especially those with children, are vulnerable to food insecurity. Since 2021, and the emergence of the UK’s ‘cost-of-living crisis’, food charities have reported increased requests for support from families with young children. However, the experience of food insecurity amongst families with very young infants remains poorly understood. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first qualitative stu

Manifestations of food allergy in infants and children.

Most adverse reactions to foods are the result of intolerances rather than food allergy. It is important to identify children with potential food allergy as life-threatening, and life-ending reactions can occur. A clear understanding of the manifestations of food allergy caused by both IgE- and non-IgE-related mechanisms will help the practitioner to identify children who likely have food allergy so that additional diagnostic evaluation can be performed and appropriate avoidance can be instituted.

Misdiagnosed food allergy resulting in severe malnutrition in an infant.

As food allergies become increasingly prevalent and testing methods to identify "food allergy" increase in number, the importance of careful diagnosis has become even more critical. Misdiagnosis of food allergy and inappropriate use of unproven testing modalities may lead to a harmful food-elimination diet. This case is an example of an infant who was placed on an overly restrictive elimination diet at the recommendation of her health care providers, resulting in kwashiorkor and acquired acrodermatitis enteropathica.

Approach to the spectrum of infant non-IgE-mediated food allergy manifestations and physiologic infant behaviors.

Physiologic infant behaviors and symptoms of pathologic conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, IgE-mediated food allergy, eosinophilic esophagitis, and other non-IgE-mediated food allergy (including food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis, acute and chronic forms of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, and food protein-induced enteropathy) may have significant overlap, leading to diagnostic uncertainty for primary care physicians and pediatric subspecialists alike. Here we explore the clinical features of gastroesophageal reflux disease and IgE-mediated and non-IgE-med
