Infection Control in the Dental Office.

The goal of an infection control program is to provide a safe working environment for dental health care personnel and their patients. Practitioners can achieve this by adopting measures that reduce health care-associated infections among patients and occupational exposures among dental health care personnel. It is crucial for all dental practitioners to be up to date on current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, equipment, and techniques for proper infection control. Continuous evaluation of infection control practices is important. Patients and dental providers should be

Concerns regarding infection control recommendations for dental practice.

It goes without saying that the members of any professional group are more likely to modify their behavior if they are provided with logical, rational reasons to enact the suggested change. In the mid 1980s, health care providers, including dental personnel, were advised to adopt universal precautions and to alter their infection control habits with minimal justification, apart from the general unease and paranoia surrounding AIDS. Therefore, it is understandable that some practitioners would react with scepticism to the idea that their traditional infection control techniques were less than a

[Infection control in dentistry. II.: Disinfection od dental handpieces].

The effectiveness of three different kind of sterilization or disinfection procedures was investigated in case of contaminated turbine handpieces. The results demonstrated that formaldehyde, isopropyl-alcohol and ethylenoxid are equally effective to disinfect or sterilize handpieces. The isopropyl-alcohol solving in pure ethyl-alcohol is one of the material which complies most of the requirements, as described by the authors.

[Implementation of effective infection control: furnishing a -dental practice].

The increasing resistance to antibiotics and the aging of the population of patients who visit the dental practice can lead to more frequent infections with (resistant) microorganisms. The prevention of cross contamination by the implementation of effective measures in the area of hygiene and procedures of infection control is therefore important. The furnishing of a dental practice can play an important part in prevention. What are the important issues in furnishing a practice? A distinction is made between 'critical' and 'non-critical' rooms. Patients are only treated and instruments are onl

Infection control in the dental office: has anything changed?

Using data collected in two studies, the authors compare infection control practices used in dental offices in 1988 and 1992. During that time, dentists increased their use of barrier protection but still asked and learned very little about their patients. This lack of communication hinders dentists' ability to deliver the best care possible. The authors recommend that dentists improve communication with their patients to obtain better information about their health status.

Infection control practices in Indian dental clinics: A cross-sectional study.

Inadequate infection control in dental clinics increases occupational and patient risk of blood-borne and aerosol-transmitted infections. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate infection control awareness and practices among 70 private dental clinics in India using a standardized questionnaire based on CDC guidelines. Overall adherence was moderate, with significant gaps in aerosol management, post- exposure protocols, sterilization practices and vaccination awareness. MDS-qualified practitioners demonstrated significantly higher compliance than BDS practitioners across multiple domains (p<0

Dental hygienists and infection control: knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in Italy.

This study evaluated knowledge, attitudes and behaviour regarding infection control of dental hygienists in Italy. Among the 185 responders to the self-administered mailed questionnaire, 91.3% agreed with the correct responses to the three questions on knowledge about infection prevention and control procedures chosen as an indicator of 'good' knowledge. However, 21% were uncertain whether, or disagreed that, dental instruments should be rinsed in water after contact with glutaraldehyde and 17.5% agreed that, or were uncertain whether, 10 min contact with glutaraldehyde provided sterilization.

Hepatitis B vaccination and infection control in Brazilian dental practice, 1990.

The aims of the study were to examine the knowledge of occupational hazards from blood-borne viruses, and practices related to cross-infection control in Brazil, by a survey of 947 Brazilian dental practitioners at a National Dental Congress in January 1990. Over 80% were aware that hepatitis B virus can be present in the oral cavity and constitutes an occupational hazard but their perceptions as to the hazards from other agents were at variance with the published evidence. Over 75% were aware of the existence of vaccines against hepatitis B virus but less than 60% appreciated the possible lon
