How do interdisciplinary practitioners conceptualize infection control in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic?

AIM: During the recent global pandemic, nursing home (NH) residents were among the most vulnerable, yet empirical insights into how practitioners conceptualized and implemented infection control in NHs were limited. This study aimed to explore the ways in which interdisciplinary NH practitioners understood and conceptualized infection control in response to emerging infectious diseases and to identify a structural framework derived from their perceptions. DESIGN: A qualitative phenomenographic research design was employed. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 interdisciplinary

Infection control practitioners' perceptions and educational needs regarding bioterrorism: results from a national needs assessment survey.

BACKGROUND: The perceived threat that biological weapons will be used in an act of terror against the United States has escalated sharply since the discovery of anthrax-tainted letters after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These events underscore the critical nature of health care and public health preparedness and the need to augment infection control practitioner education and training. METHODS: Between October 2000 and August 2001 a national needs assessment was conducted by use of a 35-question survey. The survey measured infection control practitioners' (ICPs') perception of

Burnout in Infection Control Practitioners During Extended Public Health Crisis Events: A Mixed Methods Systematic Review Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Infection prevention and control work environments are complex in nature and have long been associated with extended public health crisis events; major global outbreaks, including epidemics, and pandemics. The role of infection control practitioners shifted exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic and with this rapid change came anxiety, emotional exhaustion and burnout. Burnout at work generally occurs in response to chronic and prolonged exposure to emotionally challenging events, causing emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism, and lack of accomplishment at work. This syste

The mediating role of work engagement between perceived organizational support and work competency among Chinese infection control practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Infection control practitioners (ICPs) play a fundamental role in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections. ICPs' work competency is associated with work engagement and perceived organizational support (POS); however, the intercorrelations and mechanisms among Chinese ICPs remain unknown. Based on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to test the mediating effect of work engagement on the relationship between POS and work competency. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 340 ICPs from 8

Infections in early life and childhood leukaemia risk: a UK case-control study of general practitioner records.

We investigated infections in early life (diagnosed in general practice) and subsequent risk of childhood leukaemia in the UK General Practice Research Database (GPRD). All children born at GPRD practices and subsequently diagnosed with leukaemia were identified as cases and were individually matched (on year of birth, sex and practice) to up to 20 controls. The final analysis included 162 leukaemia cases and 2215 matched controls. Conditional logistic regression demonstrated no evidence that children with one or more recorded infection in the first year of life had a reduced risk of leukaemia

How do general practitioners test and treat gonococcal infections in the Australian Capital Territory? Implications for disease surveillance and control.

The incidence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea) and Treponema pallidum (syphilis) infections in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has increased since 2014 in people reporting heterosexual exposure. This population is more likely to present to general practice rather than to specialised sexual health clinics, with potential implications for disease surveillance and control. This study aimed to explore: conformity of self-reported clinical practice with sexually transmitted infection guidelines in general practice; gaps in sexual health knowledge and skills; and areas for improved suppo

Standardised Chinese herbal treatment delivered by GPs compared with individualised treatment administered by practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine for women with recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTI): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infection presented by women in primary care. Recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs) are defined as three episodes of UTI in the last 12 months, or two episodes in the last 6 months. Between 20 and 30 % of women who have had one episode of UTI will have an RUTI, and approximately 25 % of these will develop subsequent recurrent episodes. RUTIs can have a significant negative effect on the quality of life, and have a high impact on health care costs as a result of outpatient visits, diagnostic tests and pres

Catheterization and urinary tract infections: microbiology.

Patients with urinary catheters are a substantial proportion of the total patient population and catheter care is an important area of nursing practice. Urinary tract infection associated with catheterization is known to be the most common nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infection. Urinary tract infections can be caused by exogenous microorganisms or endogenous faecal or urethral microorganisms. The different microorganisms which are responsible for causing urinary tract infections have particular characteristics. Many microorganisms form a biofilm, a living layer of cells which stick to the su
