We report the case of a male patient with a traumatic small hemorrhage partially involving the bilateral inferior colliculi without evidence of a temporal lobe lesion. He was unable to comprehend spoken words although he had intact speech production, reading and writing abilities. Comprehension of environmental sounds was also affected. Among the receptive musical abilities, discrimination of intensity, tone and rhythm were preserved, while recognition of melody was impaired. Audiometry showed normal thresholds for pure tone. Waves I-IV of brainstem auditory evoked potentials were elicited nor

Pineal glial cysts associated with bilateral hearing impairment are very rare. Here, we present the case of a 13-year-old boy with a pineal cyst, which caused severe bilateral hearing impairment persisting from 6 years of age. When the patient was 6 years old, the bilateral hearing acuity was about 40 dB on audiometry. Upon admission to our otolaryngology department, his audiogram revealed a bilateral worsening of the hearing acuity (80 dB). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an abnormal pineal cyst with tectal compression from the left with hardly normal bilateral brainstem auditory ev

The topographic organization of neurons in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) which project to the superior and inferior colliculi was studied using the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and the fluorescent double labeling methods. Neurons projecting to the superior colliculus (SC) are situated in the rostral portion of the DNLL, whereas those to the inferior colliculus (IC) are found in the caudal area of this nucleus. These two portions are completely separated from each other and no neurons projecting to both the SC and the IC are observed. In the dorsolateral part of

We report a clinical case of a 19-year-old male patient who developed pure word deafness due to the local compressive effect of a pineal germinoma on the inferior colliculi of the quadrigeminal plate. After percutaneous radiation therapy the size of the tumor decreased significantly, while audiometry demonstrated a complete regression of the auditory deficit. Since pure word deafness is commonly attributed to temporal lesions, the inferior colliculi represent an exceptional site for these symptoms. The pathophysiological background and the scarce literature on pure word deafness, especially th

A 61-year-old man was admitted to our institution with progressive hypoacusia, double vision, and lightheadedness. Neurological examination on day 6 of his illness showed severe hypoacusia, mild confusion, ocular motility disorder, truncal ataxia and absence of a deep tendon reflex. MRI fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging revealed symmetrical high intensities in the tectum of the midbrain, involving the bilateral inferior colliculi and the bilateral medial thalami, which suggested Wernicke encephalopathy (WE). Thiamine was administered immediately after completion of the MRI, and the p

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have examined the molecular alterations in the auditory pathway of infants of diabetic mothers, notwithstanding the fact that maternal diabetes may have an impact on the development of the neonatal peripheral and central nervous systems. Male newborn rats were studied to determine how maternal diabetes affected the expression of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAAα1 and GABAB1) and metabotropic glutamate (mGlu2) receptors in the inferior colliculus (IC) in this research.
METHODS: Female rats were given a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) at a 65 mg/kg

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Deafferentation and compensatory neural plastic changes in the inferior colliculus (IC) have been suggested following single-sided deafness (SSD). We explored related miRNA changes in the IC of SSD rats using miRNA microarray analyses.
METHODS: Eight-week-old rats were divided into control and SSD rats (n = 8 for each group). SSD rats underwent right-side cochlear ablation surgery, with the IC harvested two weeks post-surgery. miRNA microarray analysis was performed using GeneChip miRNA 4.0, microarray (Affymetrix Inc.). miRNAs whose expression levels differed between SSD

Post-mortem neuropathological and in vivo neuroimaging methods have demonstrated the vulnerability of the inferior colliculus to the sequelae of thiamine deficiency as occurs in Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS). A rich literature in animal models ranging from mice to monkeys-including our neuroimaging studies in rats-has shown involvement of the inferior colliculi in the neural response to thiamine depletion, frequently accomplished with pyrithiamine, an inhibitor of thiamine metabolism. In uncomplicated alcoholism (i.e., absent diagnosable neurological concomitants), the literature citing in

Cardiorespiratory arrest and death in mouse models of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy occur when spreading depolarization is triggered by cortical seizures and then propagates to the brainstem. However, the critical brain regions and the specific changes required to allow spreading depolarization to propagate to the brainstem under the relatively rare circumstances leading to a fatal seizure are unknown. We previously found that following cortical seizure-inducing electrical stimulation, spreading depolarization could occur in both the superior and inferior colliculi in Cacna1aS218L mice,

The superior and inferior colliculi are believed to generate immediate and highly coordinated defensive behavioral responses to threatening visual and auditory stimuli. Activation of neurons in the superior and inferior colliculi have been shown to evoke increases in cardiovascular and respiratory activity, which may be components of more generalized stereotyped behavioral responses. In this study, we examined the possibility that there are "command neurons" within the colliculi that can simultaneously drive sympathetic and respiratory outputs. In anesthetized rats, microinjections of bicucull

In animal models of tinnitus pathological neuronal activity has been demonstrated. Deep brain stimulation disrupts pathological neuronal activity and might therefore be a potential treatment for patients who suffer severely from tinnitus. In this study, the effect of DBS in the inferior colliculi is investigated in an animal model of tinnitus. The external cortex of the inferior colliculus was targeted because of the key position of the inferior colliculus within the auditory network and the relation of the external cortex with the limbic system. In this study we show the effect of DBS in the

1,3-Dinitrobenzene (DNB) has previously been shown to be neuropathic, causing gliovascular lesioning in the rat brainstem, with the nuclei of the auditory pathway being particularly affected. Lesion severity was shown to be dependent on functional activity, which could be markedly decreased within one pathway by monaurally reducing sensory input. The aim of this study was to characterise the changes in electrophysiological and vascular function associated with this asymmetric lesioning. Depth electrodes located in the inferior colliculi were used to measure wave II and IV of the auditory evoke

The inferior colliculi of all mammals are characterized by a wide range of first-spike response latencies that can greatly exceed the minimum time required for the transmission of input through the lower brainstem. The mechanisms that account for long response latencies of up to 50 ms are unclear, but one hypothesis is that an early inhibition plays a role in shaping latency. To test this hypothesis, response latencies were measured in the inferior colliculi of the pallid and mustached bats before and during the blockade of GABAa and glycine receptors. The effect of blocking inhibition on resp

The hyperactive bladder response observed after central adrenergic stimulation with L-dopa, following enzymatic blockade of its peripheral metabolism, was studied in the rat. The bladder response was recorded by a cystometric procedure. The hyperactive bladder action thus produced was noted after transection of the CNS at the level of the superior colliculi but not when the transection was made caudal to the inferior colliculi. No effect was seen after transection of the cauda equina at L6, i.e. parasympathetic decentralisation of the bladder. It is concluded that the hyperactive bladder react

We report the case of a patient with mesencephalic hematoma involving only the quadrigeminal plate. One case of superior and 3 cases of inferior colliculus hematoma have already been reported. Involvement of the quadrigeminal plate frequently follows a pontine or an anterior mesencephalic hemorrhage. The cause of these hematomas may be due to cryptic malformations of the quadrigeminal plate or primitive small size hemorrhages possibly related to the nature of the arterial system. Patients with inferior colliculus lesions present a typical symptomatology consisting of trochlear nerve palsy cont

During the first year of life a girl, the first child of non-consanguineous parents, developed a progressive neurological disease characterized by blindness, severe hypotonia, impaired motor development, microcephaly and mental retardation. Later she became unresponsive to auditory stimuli. She died at the age of 13 months. Post-mortem examination revealed atrophy of the optic nerves and chiasm, lateral geniculate nuclei and superior colliculi, degeneration of the cochlear nerve roots, dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei, superior olives, lateral lemnisci, medial geniculate nuclei and inferior

The authors describe a patient with auditory agnosia caused by a tectal germinoma. Despite having normal audiometric tests, the patient failed to recognize words and musical characters. On head MRI, the inferior colliculi were infiltrated by tumor. Neuropsychological tests revealed severe impairment in recognition of environmental sounds and words, defective musical perception, and stop consonant-vowel discrimination. Inferior colliculus may play a role in the analysis of sound properties.

Central deafness has been linked historically to bihemispheric involvement of the temporal lobe, with more recent findings suggesting that compromise of other cortical and subcortical structures can also result in this disorder. The present investigation extends our understanding of the potential anatomical correlates to central deafness by demonstrating that bilateral involvement of an auditory structure within the midbrain can additionally result in this condition. Our subject was a 21-year-old male with a subarachnoid bleed affecting both inferior colliculi. Significant auditory deficits we

Thiamine deficiency in the monkey is the animal counterpart of Wernicke's disease in humans. In the present study, thiamine deficiency was induced in 11 monkeys while three monkeys were given paired feedings supplemented by thiamine hydrochloride and three monkeys were maintained on regular chow. The typical clinical symptoms were apathy, inattention to peripheral stimuli, ataxia, ptosis, mydriasis progressing to pupillary areflexia, nystagmus, and ophthalmoparesis progressing to total ophthalmoplegia. With thiamine treatment, recovery was prompt and complete in mild to moderate cases but dela
