Case Report: A rare triad of neoplasms: navigating synchronous accessory breast cancer, papillary thyroid carcinoma, and inflammatory nasal papilloma.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of an isolated axillary mass in a woman with normal breast imaging presents a significant clinical challenge, with accessory breast carcinoma being a critical yet often overlooked entity. The concurrent management of multiple primary tumors further complicates therapeutic decision-making. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of a painless, enlarging left axillary mass. Initial imaging revealed a BI-RADS 5 lesion in the left axilla with suspicious lymph nodes, but no primary breast abnormality; subsequent breast MRI confi

Breast disorders in nursing mothers.

Family physicians should be familiar with the details of breast feeding and with the breast disorders that may occur during lactation. Such disorders range from relatively minor problems, such as sore nipples, milk stasis and mastitis, to more serious conditions, such as abscesses and neoplasms. Inflammatory changes are easily treated with frequent breast emptying; infectious processes require antibiotics. Surgical intervention may be needed for some conditions. Pregnancy or lactation should not delay or alter the diagnosis and treatment of suspected breast carcinoma.

Prognostic Value of Bone Marrow Uptake Using 18F-FDG PET/CT Scans in Solid Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) uptake is known to increase in infective and inflammatory conditions. Systemic inflammation plays a role in oncologic prognosis. Consequently, bone marrow increased uptake in oncology patients could potentially depict the systemic cancer burden. METHODS: A single institute cohort analysis and a systematic review were performed, evaluating the prognostic role of 18F-FDG uptake in the bone marrow in solid neoplasms before treatment. The cohort included 113 esophageal cancer patients

Myiasis secondary to Sermatobia hominis (human botfly) presenting as a long-standing breast mass.

A case of a 54-year-old woman who presented with a breast mass is reported. Histologically, a chronic granulomatous inflammatory response was observed. The response was associated with an organism diagnosed as a fly larva, Dermatobia hominis (human botfly). The incidence of myiasis, infestation by fly larvae, presenting as a long-standing breast mass and mimicking a neoplasm is extremely rare, especially in the United States.

Review of scalp alopecia due to a clinically unapparent or minimally apparent neoplasm (SACUMAN).

Neoplastic cells, both malignant and benign, local occurring and metastatic, can cause alopecia of the scalp. However, the infiltration of neoplastic cells is sometimes not florid; a condition known as "scalp alopecia due to a clinically unapparent or minimally apparent neoplasm" (SACUMAN). Neoplastic cells can nevertheless destroy hair follicles by inducing fibroplasias via inflammatory mediators, attracting inflammatory cells and/or replacing normal cellular populations. The infiltrative nature of such an alopecia can be unapparent or only minimally apparent. The most common neoplasm in whic

[Amyopathic dermatomyositis associated with a recurrence of breast cancer].

The term "amyopathic dermatomyositis", or dermatomyositis "sine myositis" is used to describe those patients who present with the skin manifestations typical of dermatomyositis, but with no evidence of inflammatory myopathy. Amyopathic dermatomyositis may be associated with an underlying neoplasm, the same as with classic dermatomyositis. We present the case of a 59-year-old female patient, with cutaneous findings typical of dermatomyositis, with no proximal muscle weakness and with normal serum muscle enzymes, which stayed in a normal range throughout the later follow-up period, although the

Dirofilariasis of breast: report of two cases diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

We report on 2 cases of dirofilariasis of the breast occurring in adult Chinese females residing in Hong Kong. The diagnosis was made by fine-needle aspiration biopsies. The direct smears contained numerous acute inflammatory cells, including eosinophils. A partially necrotic adult nematode of about 400-450 microm in diameter was identified in the cell-block sections of each case. The worm was characterized by a thick cuticle with longitudinal cuticular ridges and fine transverse surface striations, abundant somatic muscle, an intestine, and a reproductive tube or uterus. The morphologic featu

Rapidly progressive myositis as the sole manifestation of a concurrent gastric carcinoma.

Inflammatory myopathies including polymyositis and dermatomyositis are autoimmune disorders presenting with characteristic muscle weakness. These diseases, especially dermatomyositis, have a well-known association with a wide variety of neoplasms including lung, breast, ovary and colon cancers. Here we report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with a 3-week history of myositis and was simultaneously diagnosed with gastric cancer.

Radiation for inflammatory breast cancer: Updates.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a diagnosis based on a constellation of clinical features of edema (peau d'orange) of a third or more of the skin of the breast with a palpable border and a rapid onset of breast erythema. Incidence of IBC has increased over time, although it still makes up only 1-4% of all breast cancer diagnoses. Despite recent encouraging data on clinical outcomes, the published local-regional control rates remain consistently lower than the rates for non-IBC. In this review, we focus on radiotherapy, provide a framework for multi-disciplinary care for IBC, describe local

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis with erythema nodosum simulating breast abscess in pregnancy: A case report.

Granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign inflammatory condition of the breast and is known to be associated with pregnancy. A 25-year-old Hispanic G2P1 at 17 weeks gestation presented to the emergency department with findings consistent of a breast abscess. The abscess failed to resolve with incision and drainage followed by multiple courses of antibiotic therapy. A biopsy was then obtained and yielded a diagnosis of granulomatous lobulitis. The patient was treated with steroids and her symptoms resolved. Granulomatous lobulitis may present with characteristics of various clinical entities incl

Metastatic breast carcinoma of the jugular foramen: a rare case of Villaret syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of skull base masses is diverse and includes benign and malignant neoplasms, vascular anomalies, congenital lesions, as well as infectious and inflammatory processes. Metastatic masses of the skull base are a rare manifestation of systemic malignancies. Breast cancer is the most common cause of skull base metastases. Villaret syndrome refers to cranial nerves IX, X, XI, and XII and sympathetic chain neuropathies. It is a clinical subtype of jugular foramen syndromes. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 62-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma presented wi

Different patterns of HLA-DR antigen expression in normal epithelium, hyperplastic and neoplastic malignant lesions of the breast.

Fifteen samples of non-tumoural breast tissue, 24 cases of benign lesions, four biopsies of inflammatory carcinomas and 94 tumour samples of primitive mammary carcinomas were analysed for HLA class II expression. We found, first, that HLA class II antigens were detectable in all cases of non-neoplastic breast tissue. Secondly, HLA class II antigen expression was notably increased in benign neoplasms and hyperplastic lesions. In contrast, only 32 out of 94 carcinomas showed expression of HLA-DR antigens, 17 tumours had HLA-DP antigens and 11 carcinomas were positive for the presence of DQ molec

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Breast Mimicking Complex Fibrocystic Changes, With a Novel CSTF3::ALK Fusion.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the breast is an uncommon neoplasm that presents significant diagnostic challenges due to its overlap with more common breast lesions. Clinical and imaging features are often nonspecific, leading to potential misdiagnosis. We present a breast IMT in a 38-year-old woman, initially detected as a 7-mm lesion classified as BI-RADS 3 during routine screening and suspected to represent fibrocystic changes. Follow-up ultrasound demonstrated growth to 10 mm, prompting a core needle biopsy that revealed a spindle cell lesion with prominent inflammatory infilt

[Infectious mastitis: a new solution for an old problem].

Mastitis is an inflammation of one or several mammal lobes accompanied or not by a mammary gland infection (WHO 2000). The most frequent etiology is infectious, and the highest prevalence period in women is breast-feeding time. The incidence varies from 2 to 33% according to different authors, being more frequent in primiparous women and during the early postpartum weeks. There are other breast inflammatory processes related etiologies, unrelated to breastfeeding, such as neoplasms or trauma to which no reference is made at this time, since the primary objective of this work is focused on infe

PLASMINOGEN AND ANGIOSTATIN LEVELS IN FEMALE BENIGN BREAST LESIONS.

It is known that benign breast tissue exhibit relatively low angiogenic capacity. Activation of angiogenesis in mammary pre-malignant lesions could be associated with disease progression and high risk of transformation into the breast cancer. However, insight into the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in angiogenesis regulation in non-cancerous breast pathologies is still poorly defined. The purpose of the present study was to determine levels of plasminogen and its proteolytic fragments (angiostatins) in mammary dysplasia (mastopathy and breast cyst) and benign neoplasms (fibroadenomas
