The return of H1N1: Reemergence of the influenza virus A subtype H1N1 in 1977.

Four major influenza pandemics and two notable outbreaks have been recorded since 1900. This paper discusses the history of the 1977 influenza virus A H1N1 outbreak and re-emergence, often referred to as the "Russian flu" or the "red flu". We describe the likely events leading to the outbreak, including a brief history of the 1976 H1N1 outbreak in a military base in the United States. We reconstruct the spread of the H1N1 virus across the globe in 1977-1978 and discuss the epidemiology of the outbreak. We describe the likely origins of this unusual outbreak mainly affecting young people, inclu

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura triggered by influenza A virus subtype H1N1 infection.

We report a case of acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) triggered by influenza A virus subtype H1N1 infection. In December 2010, a 27-year-old man was diagnosed with pneumonia from influenza A virus infection at a local clinic. Two days later, he was admitted to our hospital because of a worsening condition and unexplained thrombocytopenia. The influenza A virus subtype H1N1 real-time polymerase chain reaction test was positive. The patient had typical clinical signs of TTP, thus he was diagnosed with TTP. He received treatment with oseltamivir and high dose methylprednisolone.

The 2009 influenza A virus subtype H1N1 pandemic, a glance from Greece.

The 2009 influenza A - subtype H1N1 pandemic tested the public health care systems all around the globe, infecting millions and leading to thousands of deaths. Greece became the epidemic centre of the 2009 flu pandemic due to the low compliance of the general population towards the vaccination programme, the resistance acquired against antiviral drugs and the economic scenario at the time. Our study, after a thorough research in the "Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholars" medical databases, accompanied by a wide range search of medical literature from Greece, sought to have a closer look at

2009 Pandemic influenza A virus subtype H1N1 vaccination in Africa--successes and challenges.

To provide vaccination against infection due to 2009 pandemic influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A[H1N1]pdm09) to resource-constrained countries with otherwise very little access to the A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine, the World Health Organization (WHO) coordinated distribution of donated vaccine to selected countries worldwide, including those in Africa. From February through November 2010, 32.2 million doses were delivered to 34 countries in Africa. Of the 19.2 million doses delivered to countries that reported their vaccination activities to WHO, 12.2 million doses (64%) were administered. Population co

Detection and isolation of Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 from a small backyard swine herd in Colorado.

Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 A(H1N1)pdm09 was first confirmed in pigs in the United States in October 2009. In November 2010, lungs and intestines from 2 York piglets from a small, privately owned herd were submitted to the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The submitting veterinarian reported rapid weight loss and signs of pneumonia in the piglets. Gross lesions included caudoventral pneumonia in both piglets, and histologic lesions in the lungs showed characteristics consistent with influenza virus and bacterial infection. Ribonucleic acid extracted from fresh lun

Digest: Reassortment-based evolution of H1N1 subtype swine influenza virus in China.

In a new study, Zhao et al. (2025) obtain 959 whole genome sequences of H1N1 subtype swine influenza virus (SIV) isolated from China. Their analysis of the sequences, isolated between 1977 and 2020, reveals how H1N1 lineages have co-evolved and contributed to instances of zoonotic transmission within the region. This study's findings characterize the long-term evolutionary effects of frequent viral reassortment in SIV and highlight its potential to drive future pandemics.

Effectiveness of monovalent 2009 pandemic influenza A virus subtype H1N1 and 2010-2011 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines in Wisconsin during the 2010-2011 influenza season.

BACKGROUND: The 2009 influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A[H1N1]pdm09) did not exhibit antigenic drift during the 2010-2011 influenza season, providing an opportunity to investigate the duration of protection after vaccination. We estimated the independent effects of 2010-2011 seasonal trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) and A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine for preventing medically attended influenza A virus infection during the 2010-2011 season. METHODS: Individuals were tested for influenza A virus by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) after a clinical encounter f

Genetic diversity and evolution of H1N1 subtype swine influenza virus in China: a comprehensive analysis from 1977 to 2020.

Swine influenza virus (SIV) is a highly contagious respiratory pathogen that causes significant economic losses in the swine industry and poses a potential health risk to humans. This study investigated the genetic diversity and evolution of the H1N1 subtype SIV across different regions of China over the past four decades. Using 959 whole-genome sequences collected between 1977 and 2020 from public databases such as GenBank and the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), we systematically analyzed the epidemiology, phylogenetics, genotypes, and molecular characteristics of

Media use and communication inequalities in a public health emergency: a case study of 2009-2010 pandemic influenza A virus subtype H1N1.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that differences among individuals and social groups in accessing and using information on health and specific threats have an impact on their knowledge and behaviors. These differences, characterized as communication inequalities, may hamper the strength of a society's response to a public health emergency. Such inequalities not only make vulnerable populations subject to a disproportionate burden of adversity, but also compromise the public health system's efforts to prevent and respond to pandemic influenza outbreaks. We investigated the effect of socioeconomi

Evaluation of immune protective efficacy of recombinant adenovirus vector vaccine containing RBS of influenza virus subtype H1N1.

The current seasonal influenza vaccine is only 20%-60% effective on average, and its protective effect lasts only 6-8 months. Additionally, some viruses are prone to antigenic drift, which prevents the vaccine from being fully effective. Furthermore, due to antigenic drift, they are unable to effectively address the threat of pandemics, continuing to pose a threat to global health. There is an urgent need to develop vaccine strategies that go beyond traditional vaccines. The human adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vector is biologically safe and capable of inducing strong systemic and mucosal immune res

Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the hemagglutinin 1 protein of human influenza A virus subtype H1N1 circulating in Kenya during 2007-2008.

BACKGROUND: Among influenza viruses, type A viruses exhibit the greatest genetic diversity, infect the widest range of host species, and cause the vast majority of cases of severe disease in humans, including cases during the great pandemics. The hemagglutinin 1 (HA1) domain of the HA protein contains the highest concentration of epitopes and, correspondingly, experiences the most intense positive selection pressure. OBJECTIVES: We sought to isolate and genetically characterize influenza A virus subtype H1N1 (A[H1N1]) circulating in Kenya during 2007-2008, using the HA1 protein. METHODS: Nas

Pre-infection of pigs with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae modifies outcomes of infection with European swine influenza virus of H1N1, but not H1N2, subtype.

Swine influenza virus (SIV) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp) are widespread in farms and are major pathogens involved in the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). The aim of this experiment was to compare the pathogenicity of European avian-like swine H1N1 and European human-like reassortant swine H1N2 viruses in naïve pigs and in pigs previously infected with Mhp. Six groups of SPF pigs were inoculated intra-tracheally with either Mhp, or H1N1, or H1N2 or Mhp+H1N1 or Mhp+H1N2, both pathogens being inoculated at 21 days intervals in these two last groups. A mock-infected group was incl

Antibodies of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus in pigs' sera cross-react with other influenza A virus subtypes. A retrospective epidemiological interpretation of Norway's serosurveillance data from 2009-2017.

Since the incursion of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus in 2009, serosurveillance every year of the Norwegian pig population revealed the herd prevalence for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 (HIN1pdm09) has stabilised between 40% and 50%. Between 30 September 2009 and 14 September 2017, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and Norwegian Food Safety Authority screened 35,551 pigs for antibodies to influenza A viruses (IAVs) from 8,636 herds and found 26% or 8,819 pigs' sera ELISA positive (titre ≥40). Subtyping these IAV antibodies from 8,214 pigs in 3,629 herds, by a routine haemagglutination inhibition test

Optimization of the monoclonal antibody 3E1 through W32I mutation enhances antiviral efficacy against influenza virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2.

The influenza virus has caused a global pandemic with significant morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need to optimize antibodies for improved antiviral efficacy. The monoclonal antibody 3E1 effectively neutralizes Group 1 influenza subtypes, H1 and H5, by inhibiting acid-induced conformational changes of hemagglutinin (HA). However, its neutralizing activity is relatively weak against the Group 2 subtype, H3. In order to broaden the neutralizing activity of wild-type 3E1 (3E1-WT) against both Group 1 and Group 2 viral strains, single-point mutants (3E1-L [W32I], 3E1-H [F103I]) and a dou

An eight-segment swine influenza virus harboring H1 and H3 hemagglutinins is attenuated and protective against H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes in pigs.

Swine influenza virus (SIV) infections continue to cause production losses in the agricultural industry in addition to being a human public health concern. The primary method of controlling SIV is through vaccination. The killed SIV vaccines currently in use must be closely matched to the challenge virus, and their protective efficacy is limited. Live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIV) provide strong, long-lived cell-mediated and humoral immunity against different influenza virus subtypes with no need for antigen matching. Here we report the generation of a new potential LAIV, an eight-segme

Subtyping of influenza A H1N1 virus using a label-free electrochemical biosensor based on the DNA aptamer targeting the stem region of HA protein.

Rapid subtyping of influenza viruses in clinical laboratories has been increasingly important because three subtypes (seasonal H1N1, H3N2, and 2009 H1N1) of influenza A virus currently disseminated in humans have variable susceptibilities to antiviral drug. Herein, we present DNA aptamers for selective detection of influenza A H1N1 (seasonal and 2009 pandemic H1N1) viruses by targeting recombinant influenza A mini-hemagglutinin (mini-HA) protein (the stable stem region of HA) and whole H1N1 viruses. The dissociation constants (KD) of aptamer candidates V46 and V57 were 19.2 nM and 29.6 nM, res

Role of Age in the Spread of Influenza, 2011-2019: Data From the US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network.

Intraseason timing of influenza infection among persons of different ages could reflect relative contributions to propagation of seasonal epidemics and has not been examined among ambulatory patients. Using data from the US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network, we calculated risk ratios derived from comparing weekly numbers of influenza cases prepeak with those postpeak during the 2010-2011 through 2018-2019 influenza seasons. We sought to determine age-specific differences during the ascent versus descent of an influenza season by influenza virus type and subtype. We estimated 95% credible

The use of abdominal free fat for volumetric augmentation and primary dural closure in supratentorial skull base surgery: managing the stigma of a temporal defect.

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute, inflammatory skin disease of unknown cause. Various infectious agents including viruses have been proposed as causative agents and presence of influenza subtype H1N1 was shown in case reports with PR, but the relation was not conclusive. We hypothesited that there may be a relation between PR and H1N1, since both of them are prevalent in the same period as winter or season transitions.
