New visual culture of science: analysis of graphical abstracts in the life science journal "Cell".

Driven by the shift towards online journal publishing, many academic journals have introduced graphical abstracts (GAs) since the 2000s to convey the primary findings of research papers. This study investigated this visual culture in life sciences by analyzing GAs with focus on content, representation, and background. In total, 333 GAs were collected from articles published in the journal Cell in 2021 and analyzed. Among these, 295 GAs (88.6%) explained the results and models and succinctly presented the key findings, and 251 GAs (75.4%) used a layout that divided the area into two or more sec

"Why isn't fibre mentioned more often?" Conducting focus groups with an ageing population to promote dietary fibre-related awareness and starting the conversation.

The UK population is ageing and promoting healthy eating is a key priority. Dietary fibre fits this remit; however, despite the well-proven benefits, intake is substantially below the UK-based (Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition; SACN) 30 g/d recommendations. Face-to-face activities are a means to drive engagement with the topic and identify viable age-suitable strategies to modulate future intake. Community living older adults (n = 34; 65+) were recruited to partake in focus groups to: (1) discuss healthy eating and challenges; (2) raise awareness of dietary fibre and understand knowl

Improving consumer understanding of dietary health risks using the lens of ultra-processing: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Over-consumption of ultra-processed foods is a major barrier to healthier eating, indicating the current food-based dietary guidelines utilised in many countries are not deterring consumption of these foods. A level-of-processing framework that discourages Ultra-processed Food (UPF) consumption represents a potential paradigm shift in communicating dietary risk to consumers and guiding dietary behaviour. This study experimentally compared two infographics: (1) a proof-of-concept visual representation of level-of-processing guidelines (UPF infographic); and (2) the Australian Guide

Assessing the Impact of Visualizations of Quantitative and Qualitative Risk Information on the Comprehension of Hypothetical Risk-Based Breast Cancer Screening Results.

This study aimed to assess whether, in the context of communicating risk-based breast cancer screening results, visualizations of risk information consisting of an icon array depicting quantified breast cancer risk and simplified drawings for "qualitative" risk information (e.g. risk factors, screening frequency) offer added value compared to a textual format presenting numerical information. An online experiment was conducted with a 3 (information format: text with numbers - text with risk visualizations - interactive) ×4 (breast cancer risk category: slightly decreased, average, slightly inc

Tools to help patients and other stakeholders' input into choice of intercurrent event strategy for estimands in randomised trials.

BACKGROUND: Estimands can help to clarify the research questions being addressed in randomised trials. Because the choice of estimand can affect how relevant trial results are to patients and other stakeholders, such as clinicians or policymakers, it is important for them to be involved in these decisions. However, there are barriers to having these conversations. For instance, discussions around how intercurrent events (post-randomisation events which affect the interpretation or existence of the outcome) should be addressed in the estimand definition typically involve complex concepts as wel

International perspective on healthcare provider gender bias in musculoskeletal pain management: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain affects millions of individuals worldwide. Healthcare provider gender bias in the management of these individuals has societal and individual ramifications. Yet, a thorough and comprehensive literature summary on this topic is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to systematically: (1) identify and map the available scientific and grey literature as it relates to healthcare provider gender bias in the assessment, diagnosis and management of (chronic) musculoskeletal pain and (2) identify current gaps that necessitate further research. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scopi

Co-design of resources to support researchers to develop accessible and inclusive patient information leaflets for randomised controlled trials: the UK-based MAPLE project.

BACKGROUND: Low English language literacy and diverse communication needs are widespread in the UK. Provision of lengthy and complex patient information leaflets (PILs) for clinical trials can impose a barrier to research participation. Inclusive research design incorporates providing clear and accessible written information, often in a layered approach. This project aimed to co-design resources to support researchers to create visual, inclusive, and accessible PILs for randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Nineteen public and community involvement and engagement co-design workshops w

Improving awareness of rabies and free-roaming dogs in schools of Guwahati, Assam, India: exploring the educators' perspective.

BACKGROUND: Rabies poses a significant threat to public health in India, with schoolchildren comprising approximately 40% of mortality due to this zoonotic disease. Despite ongoing interventions in schools to increase awareness about rabies and free-roaming dogs (FRD), the incidence of dog bites and rabies cases among schoolchildren continues to rise. This study addresses the limitations of existing awareness programs by exploring educators' perspectives and proposing innovative, feasible, and cost-effective interventions in schools. METHODS: A three-day workshop involving 19 teachers from se
