Sickle cell centers of tomorrow. Part I: Regional information centers.

Regional sickle cell organizations are needed to assemble, catalogue, and distribute information, to maintain teaching programs, to serve as referral agencies, and to aid individuals with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies in obtaining maximal benefit from existing community services. The governing body should be representative of the entire area. More than half of the voting members should be adults with the sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease and/or their relatives. A suggested minimal staff could consist of a secretary-librarian and a director. The usefulness of the "Center" to patients, e

Evaluating Readability and Reliability of Online Information Provided by Pancreas Transplant Centers in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The decision of proceeding with a pancreas transplant (PTx) is a complex one, and patient education is important to allow transplant candidates to make an informed and autonomous decision. In this study, we assessed the readability and reliability of online information provided by PTx centers in the United States. METHODS: Websites of PTx centers active between 2022 and 2023 were searched for patient information on pancreas transplantation. Readability was assessed using eight validated formulas. Reliability was assessed using the Journal of the American Medical Association criter

Sources of Information and Support for Breastfeeding: Alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Strategies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research consistently supports health benefits of breastfeeding; however, rates in the United States remain below Healthy People 2020 goals. To increase breastfeeding, information and support are needed from multiple sources. Given differences in breastfeeding rates by demographic characteristics, sources of information and support may also differ. In addition, recent research suggests potential differences in health outcomes related to feeding method (direct breastfeeding only, feeding expressed human milk, combination-feeding with formula). This study examined (1)

Exposures Through Breast Milk: An Analysis of Exposure and Information Calls to U.S. Poison Centers, 2001-2017.

Introduction: We described calls to U.S. poison centers (PCs) related to potential exposure to substances through breast milk. Materials and Methods: We analyzed National Poison Data System calls between 2001 and 2017 with "Exposure through breast milk" or "Drug use during breastfeeding" as the coded scenario. Data handling and descriptive statistics were carried out using SAS JMP 12.01. Results: U.S. PCs received 76,416 information calls and 2,319 exposure calls related to breast milk. Exposure calls were from a residence in 76% (n = 1,758), from health care facilities (HCFs) in 15.5% (n = 36

Current status and actions needed for disseminating medical information to the public at National Centers in Japan.

Providing reliable medical information via the Internet is a pivotal mission for the National Centers (NCs) in Japan. This paper reports on the current state of medical information dissemination via the Internet and the management systems at eight departments across six NCs, and explores strategies for optimizing their services of information delivery. We investigated these departments' establishment backgrounds, website content, quality control measures, and dissemination challenges. The rationale for establishing the departments and the types of medical information disseminated varied across

[Information deficits and hesitant acceptance of combined pancreas-kidney transplantation in Germany. A survey at German dialysis centers].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The pancreas kidney transplantation (PKTx) currently is the only treatment for cure for patients with diabetes mellitus Type 1. Despite the availability of organs and the need for therapy the PKTx rate is much lower in Germany than it is in the United States. Is this attributable to an information gap?. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire contrasting 16 statements pro and con PKTx was sent to 960 dialysis centres in Germany. RESULTS: 397 out of 960 questionnaires were returned, resulting in an response rate of 41.4 %. Regional representation was established. The c

Optimizing nation-wide locations of dialysis centers: a geographic information system-based approach to improve healthcare accessibility and availability.

BACKGROUND: Accessibility and availability are critical components of quality healthcare, particularly for dialysis patients requiring tri-weekly treatments. Inconveniently placed or oversubscribed dialysis centers contribute to widening healthcare disparities. This study aims to enhance equity in dialysis care by utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to optimize facility placement through data-driven decision-making. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed national data from 5,961 hemodialysis patients across 76 dialysis centers in Israel. Geographic accessibility was assessed

[The STIZ and the epidemiology of poisoning in Switzerland (Swiss Toxicologic Information Center)].

Despite the fact that the danger and the sequelae of poisoning are regularly referred to in the media, comprehensive reports about type and frequency of poisoning in Switzerland are not available in the literature. Thus morbidity of poisoning can only be judged by the calls and written replies of treating physicians. According to the retrospective evaluation of the data available to us (1966 to 1991), the number of poisoning leading to severe life-threatening symptoms is tending to decline. This apparent success of prevention and treatment of poisoned patients in our country should be corrobor

Patient-centered Radiology: Implementing a Trauma-informed Care Framework.

The authors present a framework for integrating trauma-informed care principles into radiologic procedures. Trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the widespread impact of psychological trauma, incorporating this understanding into health care practices to prioritize patient safety, trust, and support while minimizing the risk of retraumatization. Given the high prevalence of psychological trauma among patients, radiologic procedures-some of which can be physically and emotionally distressing, such as breast biopsies, hysterosalpingography, and fluoroscopic enemas-must be approa

Interim polio vaccine information materials. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services. Notice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has modified its recommendation for use of the two polio vaccines to discourage use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) for the first two doses administered, except in limited circumstances. This revised recommendation necessitates a revision of the vaccine information statement entitled, "Polio Vaccines: What You Need to Know" (dated February 6, 1997), which was developed by the CDC as required by the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 (NCVIA). To ensure that up-to-date information is available regarding this revised recommendation, CDC i

Chile's National Center for Health Information Systems: A Public-Private Partnership to Foster Health Care Information Interoperability.

Despite the continuous technical advancements around health information standards, a critical component to their widespread adoption involves political agreement between a diverse set of stakeholders. Countries that have addressed this issue have used diverse strategies. In this vision paper we present the path that Chile is taking to establish a national program to implement health information standards and achieve interoperability. The Chilean government established an inter-agency program to define the current interoperability situation, existing gaps, barriers, and facilitators for interop
