Health Information Literacy as a Determinant of Digital Self-Efficacy.

This brief report examines the association between health information literacy and digital self-efficacy (DSE) in patients with multiple sclerosis or epilepsy (pwMS/E). The focus is specifically on critical and risk-conscious aspects of health information literacy. The study used survey data (N = 287) collected from pwMS/E. The analysis comprises a principal component analysis and a regression analysis. In a model controlling age, gender and subjective anxiousness and/or depression, a high level of health information literacy was associated with higher DSE. The model explained over one-third o

Health literacy: an important issue for communicating health information to patients.

"Health literacy" refers to an individual's ability to read, understand, and use the information necessary to obtain adequate health care. Because so much health-related information is provided to patients in written form, some degree of health literacy is essential. A review of the international medical and education literature was conducted to identify research on health literacy. Limited health literacy is a widespread problem in both non-industrialized and industrialized nations, and it is mostly related to deficient reading skills. Deficient reading skills are most prevalent among those w

Closing the comprehension gap: low literacy and the Cancer Information Service.

An estimated one in five Americans is functionally illiterate; they lack the literacy skills to access information or to perform many other basic tasks vital to their health and well-being. The National Cancer Institute and its Cancer Information Service have been working since 1990 to develop cancer-education strategies and materials to reach people with limited literacy skills. This paper reviews the link between cancer and illiteracy, the magnitude of the problem, and the association between cancer, certain health-related behaviors, and educational attainment. It also examines innovative Na

Health information literacy among children with spinal muscular atrophy and their caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive motor neuron disease that leads to multiple organ dysfunction. The advent of disease-modifying treatments makes the early diagnosis of SMA critical. Health information literacy is vital for obtaining, understanding, screening, and using health information. Considering the importance of early diagnosis and the challenges in obtaining accurate information on patients with SMA, this cross-sectional study assessed health information literacy among children with SMA and their caregivers in China. METHODS: Interviews with the careg

[Information materials for colorectal cancer screening for citizens with low health literacy].

For multiple reasons, certain socially disadvantaged populations are more affected by colorectal cancer but have lower screening rates than wealthier populations. The Vaud colorectal cancer screening program (CCR) provides a 20-page decision support tool for the 50-69-year-old population. Three new tools have now been designed specifically for citizens with a low level of health literacy: a simplified 6-page leaflet presenting the choice of a Fecal Occult Blood Test (FIT) and colonoscopy; a 2-page leaflet presenting the detection and screening of 4 common cancers; and a short video presenting

From information receiver to knowledge constructor: The dynamic construction of health information literacy in treatment practice among people living with HIV.

Existing studies have largely framed people living with HIV (PLHIV) medication decisions as outcomes shaped by relatively stable factors and have conceptualized health information literacy (HIL) as a static individual-level capacity. Far less attention has been paid to understanding it as a dynamic and evolving process through which PLHIV recalibrate their decisions across different stages of treatment. This study therefore seeks to examine how PLHIV, in the course of ongoing treatment, continuously construct, appraise, and adjust their medication decisions on the basis of HIL. This study adop

A Multimetric Health Literacy Analysis of Online Information for Gluteal Augmentation With Fat Grafting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the number of gluteal augmentations with fat grafting, colloquially known as the "Brazilian buttock lift" (BBL), doubled from 2014 to 2018. Recent studies have demonstrated that gluteal augmentation with fat grafting has a higher mortality rate when compared with other esthetic surgeries. We hypothesize that online patient-directed information for gluteal augmentation are overly complex, written at an elevated reading grade level, with incomplete or no information regarding associated surgical risks. OBJECTIVE: T

Diabetes literacy and informal social support: a qualitative study of patients at a diabetes centre.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the resources that patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes drew upon to manage the disease in their daily lives. BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is a disease affecting Australian adults at a rate described as an 'epidemic'. Treatment usually focuses on patient self-management, which may require daily blood sugar monitoring, oral medications or injectable therapies, and regulating diet and exercise. Health research studies of patient self-management, including those involving type 2 diabetes, have focused largely on individual-centred definitions, though a number of
