Infratemporal Fossa Chondroblastoma.

INTRODUCTION: Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor that can behave local aggressive. It most often occurs in the area of the epiphyses of long tubular bones, whereas the appearance in the region of the head and neck is rare, only few reports were published in literature. The incidence of chondroblastoma of the craniofacial region is about 6.4%. CLINICAL REPORT: A 46-year-old patient was hospitalized due to growth and pain in the area of the left half of the face, and a tumor of the left infratemporal fossa was diagnosed by computed tomography. The patient was operated with a pr

[Infratemporal fossa schwannoma].

INTRODUCTION: Due to its contents and relations with neighboring regions, the infratemporal fossa has a great clinical significance. Primary tumors of this region, both benign and malignant, are rare, but they do require surgical treatment, which is determined by the size and localization of the tumor. CASE REPORT: The paper presents the case of a 72-year-old female patient who was referred to hospital for paresthesia in the left half of the face after having been found to have a tumor of left infratmeporal fossa by imaging methods. The tumor was completely removed by transfacial-transzygomat

Preauricular transzygomatic anterior infratemporal fossa approach for tumors in or around infratemporal fossa lesions.

Various surgical approaches to the infratemporal fossa (ITF) have been reported. Among them, the preauricular transzygomatic anterior ITF approach (anterior ITF approach) has been used for exposure of the antero-superior part of the ITF. The purpose of this article is to show anatomical dissections using the anterior ITF approach and to evaluate our surgical experience using this approach. An anatomical study of the anterior ITF approach was performed using six sides of three cadaveric heads. Clinical course was retrospectively reviewed for 34 patients who underwent microsurgical resection of

Microsurgical anatomy of the infratemporal fossa.

The objective of this study is to clearly and precisely describe the topography and contents of the infratemporal fossa. Ten formalin-fixed, adult cadaveric specimens were studied. Twenty infratemporal fossa were dissected and examined using micro-operative techniques with magnifications of 3-40×. Information was obtained about the inter-relationships of the contents of the infratemporal fossa. The infratemporal fossa lies at the boundary of the head and neck, and the intracranial cavity. It is surrounded by the maxillary sinus anteriorly, the mandible laterally, the pterygoid process anterome

Congenital cholesteatoma of the infratemporal fossa.

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of congenital cholesteatoma of the infratemporal fossa. METHOD: The clinical, radiological and intra-operative findings of the patient are presented. RESULTS: A five-year-old girl presented to our hospital with symptoms in the left ear consistent with middle-ear effusion. A congenital cholesteatoma was not suspected until an enlarging mass in the anteroinferior quadrant of the tympanic membrane was observed. Radiological studies revealed that the mass was located largely in the infratemporal fossa, with limited extension into the tympanic cavity. T

Catecholamine-secreting infratemporal fossa paraganglioma.

Extraadrenal paragangliomas are tumors of the paraganglion system, usually arising from the carotid bodies, the glomus jugulare, or the glomus tympanicum. These tumors are capable of secreting catecholamines which can cause severe hypertensive crises. This paper reports a case of a patient who suffered a cerebral vascular accident due to hypertension resulting from a catecholamine-secreting infratemporal fossa paraganglioma. Any patient with a history of paroxysmal hypertension, headaches, and palpitations should be evaluated for a catecholamine-secreting tumor. Diagnosis and management of the

Hydatid cyst in unusual location: Pterygopalatine fossa-infratemporal fossa.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid Cyst is a zoonotic infection most commonly caused by larvae of the Echinococcus granulosus. Humans are an accidental intermediate host following ingestion of the larvae. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 16-year-old male patient presenting with a hydatid cyst in the pterygopalatine fossa. There was no pulmonary or hepatic involvement. The definitive therapy comprised excision of the cystic mass and postoperative medical treatment. DISCUSSION: Pterygopalatine fossa involvement is reported in three cases in the literature. In this report we represent a case with pteryg

Pseudogout mimicking an infratemporal fossa tumor.

BACKGROUND: The infratemporal fossa is a well-concealed, complex anatomical space. Neoplasms arising in this area are heterogenous in nature and have an insidious onset and usually present late. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case of a 71-year-old woman who presented with worsening facial pain, trismus, and a large mass in her infratemporal fossa with minimal associated temporomandibular joint destruction. She underwent a surgical excision of the mass, which revealed a pseudogout deposit. CONCLUSION: The clinical and radiological features of patients with tophaceous pseudogout frequently

Primary hydatid cyst of the infratemporal fossa.

Hydatid cyst disease is a rare parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus. This parasite in the larval stage can thrive in many parts of the body, most frequently in the liver. Head and neck involvement of the disease is rare. Herein, we present a case of primary hydatid cyst occurring in the infratemporal fossa, which is an extremely rare localization.

Infratemporal fossa mucocele with trigeminal nerve compression.

We present a rare case of an infratemporal fossa mucocele with facial paresthesia in a 36-year-old man. Both computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a cystic lesion occupying the left infratemporal fossa. Marsupialization using transmaxillary and endoscopic intranasal approaches was performed to drain the mucocele into the nasal cavity and the application of mitomycin C to preserve the drainage of mucocele, which may be a good surgical option for the complete excision of infratemporal fossa cystic lesions without causing postoperative morbidity.

Gliosarcoma with infratemporal fossa extension. Case report.

Gliosarcomas are bimorphic intraaxial tumors. Involvement of the skull base is highly unexpected. The authors present the case of a temporal lobe gliosarcoma with significant infratemporal fossa extension. This 55-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of severe progressive headache. Neurological examination was unremarkable except for bilateral papilledema. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6-cm right temporal mass with extension into the infratemporal fossa. The patient underwent a right frontotemporal craniotomy together with drilling of the sphenoid ridge and middle fossa floor.

A bullet in the maxillary antrum and infratemporal fossa.

A young male patient was shot from a revolver on his left temple from a close range, but surprisingly he survived. On imaging, a complete bullet was found occupying his left maxillary sinus and infratemporal fossa. The bullet, after hitting and breaking the neck of the mandible on the left side, ricocheted and entered the left maxillary sinus through its posterior wall. It was removed safely by a combination of sublabial antrotomy and endoscopic approach.

[Liposarcoma of the infratemporal fossa. Apropos of a case].

The authors report about one female patient with a liposarcoma of the right infratemporal fossa. Such tumors are rare, making up 10 to 12% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Their occurrence in a cervical site is rare, unlike that in the inguinal region, the retroperitoneum or the lower limbs. Their diagnosis is mainly established by the histopathological study. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are particularly useful to choose the surgical approach. The technique chosen for this infratemporal tumor was a transmandibular cervical approach. Evolution was favorable, and the patient h

The Endoscopic Prelacrimal Recess Approach to the Pterygopalatine Fossa and Infratemporal Fossa.

PURPOSE: The authors studied the anatomic importance of the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (PLRA) to the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and infratemporal fossa (ITF). METHODS: Ten adult heads (20 sides) from cadavers fixed in formalin were dissected using the PLRA. Anatomic dissections were detailed and several crucial landmarks measured. RESULTS: Identification of the infraorbital neurovascular bundle is the crucial step for the detection of other branches of the maxillary artery. The distance from the base of columella to inferior orifice of the nasolacrimal duct, sphenopalatine foram

Mini-invasive surgery of infratemporal fossa schwannomas.

BACKGROUND: Infratemporal fossa schwannomas are benign, encapsulated tumours of the trigeminal nerve limited to the infratemporal fossa. Because of the complications and significant morbidity associated with traditional surgical approaches to the infratemporal fossa, which include facial nerve dysfunction, hearing loss, dental malocclusion and cosmetic problems, less invasive alternatives have been sought. METHODS: This paper reports two cases of infratemporal fossa schwannomas treated in 2012 using mini-invasive approaches. The literature regarding different infratemporal fossa approaches wa
