General-purpose infusion pumps.

General-purpose infusion pumps deliver liquid medications to patients through intravenous or epidural routes at specified flows. They are most often used in hospitals and alternative care settings (e.g., physician' offices, patients' homes) when liquid medications need to be administered with greater accuracy or at higher flows than can be provided through a manually adjusted gravity administration set. In this Update of our February 1997 Evaluation of infusion pumps (Health Devices 26[2]), we tested 3 additional pumps from 3 suppliers. We also rated and ranked them in comparison with the 16 u

Modern infusion pumps: are they accurate?

This study examined the volumetric accuracy of six infusion pumps currently available in Canada. Volumes delivered by all pumps over a range of 20-200 ml an hour were within five per cent of their indicated values. The pumps proved to be consistent and unaffected by the height of the infusion bag above the pump or by differing cannulae sizes. A discussion of some of the infusion methods for obtaining clinical accuracy is included.

Use of continuous infusion pumps during radiation treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Despite increasing chemoradiotherapy treatment, there is a paucity of information regarding the effects of radiation exposure on ambulatory infusion pumps used to deliver chemotherapy or other essential medications. The aim of this overview is to present the available evidence on this subject, heighten awareness within the clinical community, provide considerations for minimizing possible negative effects on patient care, and encourage the monitoring of infusion devices after exposure to radiation or electromagnetic interference. METHODS: Published literature was systematically

General-purpose infusion pumps. Evaluating the B. Braun Outlook Safety Infusion System.

General-purpose infusion pumps deliver liquid medications and intravenous (i.v.) fluids to patients through i.v. or epidural routes at specified flows. They are most often used when greater accuracy or higher flows are needed than can be provided by a manually adjusted gravity administration set. In this Evaluation (which updates our October 2002 study), we present our findings for two newly evaluated pumps: the B. Braun Outlook 100 and Outlook 200. The Outlook 200 is the first general-purpose infusion pump to offer a new type of safety feature: an automated programming system. This system sca

[ADMINISTRATION OF ENTERAL NUTRITION. USE OF INFUSION PUMPS].

Enteral nutrition (NE) is a technique of artificial nutrition that enables management by digestive tract of a defined mixture of nutrients and water, by means of probes implanted nasally or by enterostomies (eg: gastrostomy). Whenever the patient present limitations for voluntary oral ingestion or swallowing of the nutrients, and digestive capacity permitted to absorb nutrients, will draw the administration through a tube. Concern for the nutritional status of the patients is a more present reality among health professionals have demonstrated the direct relationship between malnutrition and mo

Pediatric models for adult target-controlled infusion pumps.

Target-controlled infusion (TCI) pumps currently do not satisfactorily cater for the pediatric population, particularly for those under 5 years. Growth and development are two major aspects of children not readily apparent in adults, and these two aspects influence clearance (CL) and volume of distribution (V). In simple terms, V determines initial dose, and CL determines infusion rate at steady state. Three major covariates (size, age, and organ function) contribute to parameter variability in children. Size can be standardized for clearance in a 70-kg person using the allometric (3/4) power

Pump infusion of pilocarpine.

Pilocarpine was infused into the conjunctival sac of glaucoma patients with the Sage Model 216 pump. Doses as high as 20 mg were given in 30 min without ocular or systemic toxicity. The ocular hypotension effect, in the same group of patients, was doubled over 4-percent pilocarpine drops given four times daily. In addition to increased efficacy the duration of the ocuoar hypotensive effect was markedly prolonged. Return of ocular pressure to baseline values after a single pump infusion of 20 mg required an average of 33.9 h.

Benefits of smart pumps for automated changeovers of vasoactive drug infusion pumps: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Manual changeover of vasoactive drug infusion pumps (CVIP) frequently lead to haemodynamic instability. Some of the newest smart pumps allow automated CVIP. The aim of this study was to compare automated CVIP with manual 'Quick Change' relays. METHODS: We performed a prospective, quasi-experimental study, in a university-affiliated intensive care unit (ICU). All adult patients receiving continuous i.v. infusion of vasoactive drugs were included. CVIP were successively performed manually (Phase 1) and automatically (Phase 2) during two 6-month periods. The primary endpoint was the

Do hepatic artery infusion pumps cause recurrent pleural effusions?

Hepatic artery infusion pump chemotherapy (HAIPC) for colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) is a new technique in the treatment of CRLM, whose side effects are not well studied. Case Report: This paper aims to understand the side effect profile of HAIPC as it relates to recurrent pleural effusions. This is a case report of a 48-year-old male with CRLM being treated with HAIPC, who presents with recurrent pleural effusions found to be benign/transudative after right-side video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Discussion: This study suggests that HAIPC causes recurrent sympathetic pleural effusions

Mortality among diabetic patients using continuous subcutaneous insulin-infusion pumps.

Because of concern about deaths among diabetic patients using continuous subcutaneous insulin-infusion pumps, we conducted an investigation to determine whether the number of such deaths was excessive. By October 1982 we had identified 35 deaths among the estimated 3500 diabetic patients using pumps in the United States. The observed number of deaths was not greater than the expected number calculated from age-specific death rates for conventionally treated patients with Type I diabetes. The causes of death were not unusual, with two exceptions. One death was associated with malfunction of the

Submuscular Placement of Baclofen Infusion Pumps: Case Series and Technique.

BACKGROUND: Baclofen pumps provide treatment of symptoms of spasticity for disease processes such as cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury. These devices provide continuous infusion or periodic dosing of intrathecal baclofen (ITB). Traditionally, these pumps have been placed subcutaneously. Subcutaneous device placement has been associated with infection and extrusion. Baclofen pumps are large and range from 8 to 10 cm in diameter and 4 to 8 cm in width. Patients requiring device placement typically have a paucity of subcutaneous tissue. Cachexia coupled with the size and bulk of these dev

Security Driven Product Design for Open-Source Medical Syringe Infusion Pumps.

Open-source medical devices, including syringe infusion pumps, have gained popularity due to their cost-effectiveness and adaptability. However, integrating open-source components, such as their open-source software controlling system, raises significant cybersecurity concerns. This paper investigates cybersecurity vulnerability targeting an open-source medical syringe pump. We present a DDoS attack that alters the pump's operation, potentially leading to over-infusion or under-infusion of medication. We then assess the implications of these security flaws on patient safety and device reliabil

Prehospital Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: Infusion Pump for Bolus and Infusion?

OBJECTIVE: The prehospital treatment for stable patients with atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response is rate-controlling agents such as calcium channel blockers, often diltiazem given as a bolus. At our agency we encourage the use of a bolus given via the infusion pump over two to four minutes immediately followed by a maintenance infusion, given concerns of recurrent tachycardia or hypotension secondary to rapid bolus administration. We examined if administering a bolus and infusion via an infusion pump shows better heart rate (HR) control at arrival to the emergency department (
