Information from a variety of sources suggests the possibility of adverse effects of maternal inhalant abuse, although a well-controlled, prospective study in this area has not been conducted. One source of this concern is the data from occupational exposure to some of the abused solvents, specifically toluene and TCE, with numerous reports suggesting increased spontaneous abortion and fetal malformations. There are also data suggesting decreased fertility and an increased risk for spontaneous abortion in health care workers exposed to nitrous oxide. The relevance of these studies to problems

It should be apparent from this review that far less is known about the neural basis for inhalant abuse than for other forms of drug abuse. This reflects a lack of research interest in this area (Balster, 1997). Indeed, conclusions are difficult to draw. In the case of the volatile alkyl nitrites, the most reasonable hypothesis at this time is that the cellular basis for their abuse resides in their actions on smooth muscles to produce vasodilation and relaxation, however, direct effects on the brain cannot be ruled out. Although there is some evidence that analgesic effects of nitrous oxide m

Although there is a paucity of hard epidemiologic data on the prevalence of inhalant abuse, there is considerable anecdotal evidence that such abuse is continuing. Recently, we received repeated reports that one particularly public housing project in Atlanta had high rates of inhalant abuse, and to assess the prevalence of such abuse in children 4 to 20 years old, we conducted a random household survey in 400 of the project's 1,140 units. In an attempt to get complete and reliable data, wer chose and trained 10 residents as interviewers. Fifty youngsters were identified as ever having used inh

Inhalants are frequently the first mood-altering drugs used by children. They are popular because of peer influences, low cost, availability, and rapid mood-elevation effects. Inhalants cause a fleeting sense of well being, but users frequently are also affected psychologically and physically. Substances such as gasoline and paint thinners are highly toxic and destroy major organs. The abuse of inhalants can cause cardiac arrest, asphyxiation, and accidents. This article focuses on the clinical manifestation of inhalants, altered lab values, the specific agents used, and their effects on the v

Experimentation with volatile substances (inhalants) is common during early adolescence, yet limited work has been conducted examining the neurobiological impact of regular binge use during this key stage of development. Human studies consistently demonstrate that chronic use is associated with significant toxic effects, including neurological and neuropsychological impairment, as well as diffuse and subtle changes in white matter. However, most preclinical research has tended to focus on acute exposure, with limited work examining the neuropharmacological or toxicological mechanisms underpinn

A questionnaire survey of 285 consecutively recruited adolescents who were adjudicated to juvenile correctional facilities in Virginia was conducted using the Inhalant Use Questionnaire (1). White youths (36.1%) and youths from other ethnic backgrounds (44.4%) are significantly more likely to report past inhalant use than black youths (1.4%). The median age reported for first-time use of inhalants is 13 years. Youths were divided between those who experimented with inhalants (27%) and those who were heavy users (27%). Huffing was preferred by 60% of youths. Of the youths, 52% reported using in

Prolonged or excessive use of the central nervous system depressant difluoroethane, which is an easily acquired and inexpensive volatile substance that can be inhaled recreationally, is associated with toxicity, and abrupt cessation can induce withdrawal.

There are three distinct types of inhalant users: young inhalant users, adolescent polydrug users, and inhalant-dependent adults. Young inhalant users have a modal age of 12 to 13. They use inhalants and may also use alcohol and marijuana. They are likely to have more emotional problems than nondrug users or young marijuana users. These problems, particularly when they involve feelings of anger and alienation, increase the chances that they will identify with other youth who have similar feelings. When this happens, young people form peer clusters; they find a best friend or form a small gang

The authors describe inhalant abuse among children in an American Indian elementary boarding school. They discuss the initial interventions made to control this problem, such as providing a lower adult-child ratio and improving staff morale and child management skills and developing a volunteer program to improve the quality of the children's experience after school hours. They suggest that such preventive efforts be made early to interrupt the destructive cycle of dependence on external agents.

Although inhalant abuse is common, it is one of the most neglected and overlooked forms of substance abuse. Inhalants refer to a wide variety of substances including volatile solvents, aerosols, gases, and nitrites. The mechanism of action of inhalants has not been fully defined. Several molecular targets contribute to the pharmacology, including ion-channel proteins that control neuronal excitability. These agents interact with various receptors and can cause changes in cell-membrane fluidity and nerve-membrane ion channels. Three main pharmacologic categories of inhalants, namely, volatile s

Inhalation of volatile substances is a cheap and accessible way for individuals, most commonly teenagers, to ingest mind-altering substances. The adverse effects of using inhalants, including cardiac dysrhythmia, respiratory tract injury, and asphyxiation, can be devastating. Detection often is difficult, but a high degree of suspicion with patterns of perioral, perinasal, and/or digital lesions can help identify use. We report an uncommon case of severe orofacial and digital frostbite initially mistaken for an allergic reaction in a 20-year-old man following intentional inhalation of a commer

Inhalant abuse is the intentional inhalation of chemical vapors or volatile substance to achieve a euphoric effect. Although no statistical data are reported yet, inhalant abuse is potentially life-threatening and has resulted in a wide range of toxic effects such as central nervous system depression, seizures, aspiration, cardiac arrhythmia, asphyxiation, hypoxia, metabolic acidosis, and sudden death among others. We are reporting a 25-year-old white man who was brought to the emergency department after inhaling aerosolized computer-cleaning spray composed of difluoroethane. He was found to h

There is sufficient clinical and epidemiological evidence to suggest that HIV infection alone does not cause Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in AIDS. Several possible "cofactors" have been proposed. There are several reasons to consider nitrite inhalants as a plausible choice as the KS cofactor. Identifying the KS cofactor in AIDS could prove valuable for prevention of the most common cancer afflicting AIDS patients. Clarifying the mechanisms by which HIV infection and the KS cofactor produce disease may have implications for other cancers and diseases.

A 38-y-old male with occult inhalant abuse underwent an 18-mo evaluation for presumed seizure disorder. Although past medical history was significant for alcohol abuse, his wife confirmed a 6-y histoy of abstinence. His seizures were characterized as episodes of unconsciousness preceded by a feeling of "things slowing down". No muscular activity was witnessed during these episodes, and upon regaining consciousness the patient had slurred speech, disorientation, dissociative amnesia, and bizarre behavior that resolved spontaneously. Despite 4 emergency department visits, 4 hospital admissions,

Ethyl chloride is a common topical anesthetic. However, when abused as an inhalant, effects can range from headaches and dizziness to debilitating neurotoxicity requiring intubation. While previous case reports describe the short-term reversible neurotoxicity of ethyl chloride, ours show chronic morbidity and mortality outcome. During the initial evaluation, it is essential to consider the rising trend of commercially available inhalants being used as recreational drugs. We present a case of a middle-aged man presenting with subacute neurotoxicity due to repeated abuse of ethyl chloride.
