INTRODUCTION: The New Injury Severity Score (NISS) was introduced in 1997 to improve outcome prediction based on anatomical severity scoring in trauma victims. Studies on populations of blunt trauma victims indicate that the NISS, predicts better than the Injury Severity Score (ISS) mortality post-injury, which is why the NISS has been recommended as the new "gold standard" for severity scoring. However, so far the accuracy of the NISS for penetrating injuries has not been validated against the ISS.
METHODS: ISS and NISS scores were collected retrospectively for 1,787 war- and landmine victim

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether these characteristics of less misclassification and greater area under receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve of the new injury severity score (NISS) are better than the injury severity score (ISS) as applying it to our multiple trauma patients registered into the emergency intensive care unit (EICU).
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of registry data from 2 286 multiple trauma patients consecutively registered into the EICU from January 1,1997 to December 31, 2006 in the Second Affiliated Hospital, Medical School of Zhejiang University in China. Comp

BACKGROUND: Children suffering nonaccidental trauma (NAT) are at high risk of death. It is unclear whether markers of injury severity for trauma center/system benchmarking such as Injury Severity Score (ISS) adequately characterize this. Our objective was to evaluate mortality prediction of ISS in children with NAT compared with accidental trauma (AT).
METHODS: Pediatric patients younger than 16 years from the Pennsylvania state trauma registry 2000 to 2013 were included. Logistic regression predicted mortality from ISS for NAT and AT patients. Multilevel logistic regression determined the as

PURPOSE: Developing a valid method for assessing mandibular injury severity could permit standardized comparisons of treatment-specific outcomes between and among various mandibular fracture studies. The study purpose was to assess the validity of the Mandible Injury Severity Score (MISS) developed by Shetty et al (J Oral Maxillofac Surg 65:663, 2007) by measuring the association between the MISS and postoperative complications, operative time, and length of hospital stay (LOS) after operative treatment of isolated mandibular fractures.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a clinical method for characterizing and scoring mandible injury severity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Constituent fracture variables (fracture type, location, occlusion, soft tissue involvement, infection, and interfragmentary displacement [FLOSID]) were used to develop the FLOSID taxonomy for characterizing injury. Each component was assigned an empirical weight to help derive a summary measure of injury severity called the UCLA Mandible Injury Severity Score (MISS). Subsequently, MISS values were calculated for a group of 336 patients treated for mandible fractu

BACKGROUND: Hand injuries are a major contributor to emergency department workload and work-related disability. Existing descriptive scoring systems, such as Hand Injury Severity Score (HISS) and Modified HISS, help grade injury severity but have notable limitations. We developed the Employees' State Insurance Corporation Hand Injury Severity Score (ESICHISS), a simple, function-orientated scoring system. The aim was to determine whether this functionally orientated scoring system correlates with injury severity as measured by the descriptive HISS.
METHODS: All hand injury patients presenting

INTRODUCTION: measuring the severity of traumatic injuries is crucial for predicting clinical outcomes. Whereas the Injury Severity Score (ISS) has limitations in assigning scores to injuries at the same site, the New Injury Severity Score (NISS) corrects for this problem by taking into account the three most severe injuries regardless of the region of the body. This study seeks to comprehend the clinical and epidemiological profile of trauma patients while comparing the effectiveness of scales for predicting mortality.
METHODS: a descriptive, observational and retrospective study using recor

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of injury severity score (ISS)in the assessment of patients with severe trauma by the consistency analysis of the patients'ISS with severe trauma scored by three clinicians, and to guide the allocation of medical resource.
METHODS: Through retrospective analysis of 100 patients with serious or severe trauma admitted to Peking University People's Hospital since September 2020 to December 2021 (ISS≥16 points), we conducted a consistency analysis of ISS within different evaluators. The general information (gender, age), vital signs, physical examination, imag

OBJECTIVES: Recent work has questioned the accuracy of the Injury Severity Score (ISS) and the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) in the pediatric population. We sought to determine mortality rates in pediatric trauma patients at ISSs considered "severe" in adults and whether mortality would vary substantially between adults and children sustaining injuries with the same AIS.
METHODS: Univariate logistic regression was used to generate mortality rates associated with ISS scores, for children (<16 years of age) and adults, using the 2016 National Trauma Data Bank. Mortality rates at an ISS of 15 w

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of the injury severity score (ISS) and the new injury severity score (NISS) for evaluating injuries and predicting complications (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and poor prognoses (in-hospital tracheal intubation, extended length of hospital stay, ICU admission, prolonged ICU stay, and death) in patients with thoracic trauma.
METHODS: The data of consecutive patients with thoracic trauma who were admitted to the department of cardiothoracic surgery of a tertiary hospital between January 2018 and December 2021 were retrospectively collected. ISS and NISS wer

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis of concurrent bladder damage in a patient with blunt urethral trauma can lead to a high rate of morbidity. In patients with a high index of suspicion, genitourinary workup is recommended. In complicated patients with multi-trauma, this workup has a risk of being delayed. A proven prognostic indicator to evaluate the likelihood of bladder injury in this population has not been established. The aim of this study was to determine if there was a clinical association between the Injury Severity Score (ISS) and bladder injury involvement among these patients.

OBJECTIVE: Predicting high-value care outcomes is crucial in managing pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), where timely and accurate prognostication can significantly influence treatment decisions and resource allocation. This study aimed to enhance understanding of how well scoring systems such as the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) can forecast high-value care outcomes. Furthermore, the authors compared the predictive power of TRISS with the routinely used Injury Severity Score (ISS).
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of their institutional database from J

OBJECTIVE: Traffic crashes result in a loss of life but also impact the quality of life and productivity of crash survivors. Given the importance of traffic crash outcomes, the issue has received attention from researchers and practitioners as well as government institutions, such as the European Commission (EC). Thus, to obtain detailed information on the injury type and severity of crash victims, hospital data have been proposed for use alongside police crash records. A new injury severity classification based on hospital data, called the maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS), was develope

A descriptive severity scoring system for injuries to the hand, distal to the carpus, has been designed. Each ray of the hand is assessed separately. Each ray's score is then multiplied by a weighting factor for that ray and added to the scores of the other rays to obtain a total score for the injury. This system has been tested on a series of specimen injuries and compared with the opinion of experienced hand surgeons. A retrospective study of hand injuries has also been conducted, and the Hand Injury Severity Score (HISS) has been found to closely correlate with return to work. Four grades o

UNLABELLED: The Injury Severity Score (ISS) has been the most frequently used tool for stratifying injured patients. The primary hypothesis of this study was that ISS fails to differentiate between severe injury and mismanagement.
METHODS: Data models were generated for mismanaged and ideally managed patients for isolated injuries for each body system. Flow charts of care, outcomes, and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and ISS scores were generated for each model.
RESULTS: Multiple models demonstrated that minor injuries that were mismanaged would result in AIS and ISS scores that were the sam

Trauma patients with an ISS=75 have been deliberately excluded from some trauma studies because they were assumed to have "unsurvivable injuries." This study aimed to assess the true mortality among patients with an ISS=75, and to examine the characteristics and primary diagnoses of these patients. Retrospective review of the 2006-2010 U.S. Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) generated 2,815 patients with an ISS=75 for analysis, representing an estimated 13,569 patients in the country. Dispositions from the emergency department and hospital for these patients were tabulated by trauma

STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate if the thoracolumbar injury classification and severity score (TLICS) system is effective in evaluating low lumbar injuries.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The TLICS classification has been used by spine traumatologists since its introduction in 2006. The classification is predictable and consistent when dealing with thoracolumbar injuries. It is not known if the classification is effective in dealing with low lumbar injuries that tend to behave differently than thoracolumbar injuries. TLICS is yet to be clinically validated.
