Insurance effects on employer group dental expenditures.

As the number of dental insureds and the amount of insured expenditures have increased over the past decade, so has interest in determining insurance effects on dental demand among employer groups and their insureds. Using Pennsylvania Blue Shield (PBS) employer group data representing 50-65% of all PBS insureds, the authors estimate the own-effect of basic insurance rates (diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, extraction services) and the cross-effects of riders A (crowns and oral surgery), B (prosthodontics), C (periodontics), and D (orthodontics) insurance rates on annual basic e

Dental Insurance Status Among Formerly Incarcerated Older Adults.

Formerly incarcerated individuals have poorer oral health and less frequent dental care utilization than the general population. However, prior work has overlooked the relationship between prior incarceration and disparities in dental insurance coverage. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 11,638), findings from multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrate that formerly incarcerated older adults are significantly less likely to have dental insurance coverage (odds ratio [OR] = 0.745, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.608, 0.912). After accounting for the income-to-poverty

Prior Incarceration and Dental Insurance Trajectories throughout Older Adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the relationship between prior incarceration and dental insurance trajectories throughout older adulthood. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of adults aged 55 y and older who participated in the 2012-2020 Health and Retirement Survey was analyzed (n = 6,383). Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify distinct patterns of dental insurance coverage across the 8 survey waves. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the association between prior incarceration and dental insurance trajectory group membership. RESULTS: Four dental ins

Emergency department visits for dental problems among adults with private dental insurance: A national observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Dental insurance may be a protective factor in reducing unnecessary emergency department (ED) use for nontraumatic dental pain. The purpose of this study was to 1) characterize patient demographics and identify risk factors associated with ED utilization for dental problems among individuals dually enrolled in medical and dental insurance and 2) investigate antibiotic and opioid prescription patterns among these patients following discharge. Further study of this unique population may provide insight into other causes of unmet dental need beyond lack of dental insurance. METHODS: C

Exploring the association between dental insurance coverage and dental care utilization and oral health among elderly Ontarians.

OBJECTIVES: There has been an increasing interest in addressing the equity issue of accessing dental care for low-income elderly. This study aimed to estimate the marginal effects (ME) of dental insurance coverage for seniors on dental care utilization and oral health status outcomes. We also estimated the ME of dental insurance across income subgroups. METHODS: Data was sourced from the 2017/18 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)-Annual component. The ME analysis included individuals aged ≥65 years residing in Ontario (n = 10,030). ME were derived from multivariate probit regression mode

Analysis of health insurance data on dental treatment and the occurrence of osteoradionecrosis of the jaw.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is a key component in the multimodal treatment approach for head and neck cancer (HNC). Post-therapeutic surgical and/or dental interventions on the jawbone carry a risk of developing osteoradionecrosis (ORN). To mitigate this risk, dental examinations and, if necessary, treatment should be conducted prior to RT. However, the consistent implementation of these recommendations in routine dental practice remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether insured persons of AOK Saxony-Anhalt (AOK ST) utilise dental services in accordance with current treatment r

[Monitoring the implementation of the compulsory health insurance program for the prevention of dental diseases].

The purpose of the study is to monitor the implementation of the CHI program for the prevention of dental diseases. Based on the analysis of the monitoring results, the need for adjustment and direction of improvement of the observed process was identified. During the period from 2013 to 2018, there was a slight increase in the volume of preventive care per 1 insured citizen, from 0.186 visits to 0.211, which does not meet the recommended indicator and is insufficient. In the dynamics of expenses per 1 insured citizen, there is a trend of significant growth of 1.93 times. The cost of 1 visit w

An Early Look at the Effects of the 2022 Dental Loss Ratio Ballot Initiative in Massachusetts. Have Dental Insurers Increased Prices for Dental Services?

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the November 2022 Massachusetts Dental Loss Ratio ballot initiative was associated with an increase in dental service prices. DATA SOURCES AND ANALYTIC SAMPLE: We used quarterly price data from the Fluent DentaBase commercial claims dental database. Data was aggregated by state and quarter. We extracted data for Massachusetts and five comparison states: Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island from Quarter 1, 2022 through Quarter 2, 2025. Health Insurance and Untreated Dental Caries Among Children in the United States: The Mediating Role of Dental Care Utilization.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the extent to which dental care utilization mediates the relationship between health insurance type and untreated dental caries among children in the United States. METHODS: Our study population included children ages 2-18 in the 2017-March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle. The exposure was health insurance (private insurance, Medicaid, no insurance), the outcome was untreated dental caries, and the mediator was dental care utilization (dental visit ≤ 1 year). We conducted causal mediation analyses and adjusted for age, race/ethnicity

[Dental accidents in relation to general anesthesia. Experience of mutual medical insurance group].

This article reviewed retrospectively 511 cases of dental damage reported to the French group for medical insurances from 1990 to 1995, and representing 40% of all accidents related to anaesthesia. The mean incidence rate was 9.5 accidents/100 anaesthetists/year and tended to decrease over time. The part of cases qualified as being linked to a fault was high and mainly due to the lack of dental examination and of informed consent during the preanaesthetic assessment. Although the mean cost of a dental accident is low compared with other anaesthetic accidents, the global cost is substantial con

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used Medicaid enrollment and claims data from Partners for Kids, a pediatric accountable care organization in Ohio. Medical periodicity adherence was defined by the HEDIS W30 measure, and early preventive dental care was defined as having a preventive dental visit by age 30 months. Dental utilization outcomes were measured from ages 30 months to eight years. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests of indepe
