An exceptional case of xanthomatous infiltration of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems.

Tendinous and subcutaneous xanthomas are most commonly associated with primary hyperlipidemia. Xanthomatosis caused by cholesterol deposition can be a high risk marker for cardiovascular disease related to premature atherosclerosis; thus, early recognition of this diagnosis may reduce mortality and morbidity. Achilles tendon involvement is most common, followed by the extensor tendons of the hand and elbow. We present an exceptional case of tendinous and tuberous xanthomas, with intraoperative and histologic correlation, in a 34-year-old female manifesting with xanthomatous deposits of nearly

Integrating the Integumentary System with the Arts: A Review of Dermatologic Findings in Artwork.

The objectives of this review are to demonstrate that portraits, in their visual reflections of subjects faces and expressions, offer significant representations relevant to the field of dermatology and bring attention to an underappreciated aesthetic of dermatological conditions. The review comprises paintings that purposefully or inadvertently depict dermatological conditions. The findings were substantiated by searching PubMed using the keywords art, painting, and dermatology, as well as combinations of these terms. The "Notable Notes" section of JAMA Dermatology proved especially useful. T

A Multi-Systems Approach to Human Movement after ACL Reconstruction: The Integumentary System.

BACKGROUND: Emerging adulthood is a critical period for the adoption of health behaviours. This study aimed to identify distinct lifestyle profiles among university students using a person-oriented approach and to examine their associations with psychological wellbeing, stress, anxiety, and depression. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 2,078 students (aged 18-39) from the University of Torino provided data on six lifestyle indicators: sedentary behaviour, diet, sleep, alcohol, sport, and smoking. Cluster analysis (Partitioning Around Medoids) was used to identify profiles. Differences i

Potential of Bacterial Cellulose in Reconstructive Surgery of Body Integumentary System: Preliminary Studies in Animals.

The aim of the study is to present the preliminary results of the in vivo application of Komagataeibacter xylinum E25 bacterial cellulose (BC) as a replacement material for produced defects during operations. Three pigs (sus scrofa domestica) had the same defects in the ear cartilage (4 × 4 cm) and in the rectus abdominis muscle (6 × 10 cm) with BC membranes implanted into them. The time of observation of the condition of the animals was 3 months. Implantation sites did not show clinical signs of complications in the form of inflammation or necrosis. Histologically, a normal scar was produced

The tegumental surface membranes of Schistosoma mansoni are enriched in parasite-specific phospholipid species.

The complex surface structure of adult Schistosoma mansoni, the tegument, is essential for survival of the parasite. This tegument is syncytial and is covered by two closely-apposed lipid bilayers that form the interactive surface with the host. In order to identify parasite-specific phospholipids present in the tegument, the species compositions of the major glycerophospholipid classes, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol, including lysophospholipid species, were analysed in adult S. mansoni worms, isolated tegumental membranes and hamste

Two putative fatty acid synthetic genes of BgFas3 and BgElo1 are responsible for respiratory waterproofing in Blattella germanica.

Water retention is critical for physiological homeostasis and survival in terrestrial insects. While deposition of hydrocarbons on insect cuticles as a key measure for water conservation has been extensively investigated, we know little about other mechanisms for preventing water loss in insects. Here, we report two fatty acid synthetic genes that are independent of hydrocarbon production but crucial for water retention in the German cockroach Blattella germanica (L.). First, an integument enriched fatty acid elongase gene (BgElo1) was identified as a critical gene for desiccation resistance i

Chromatophores and their role in the healing process of the integument of Gymnotus carapo (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes).

Changes in integument pigmentation in fish can occur due to trauma, parasite attachment, or bacterial, viral, and fungal skin infections. Experimental wound-healing models have proven to be valuable tools for studying these processes. This study aims to characterize the chromatophores of Gymnotus carapo and their role in the healing process, using an experimental wound-healing model. The analysis focused primarily on melanophores due to their predominance in the species' integument; other pigment cell types were not detected in the examined tissues. A total of 25 adult banded knifefish specime

The bioactive compound carvacrol as a potential acaricide: An assessment of its effects on the integument of female Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato ticks.

Studies seeking control methods for infestation of Riphicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) ticks (dog ticks) have been carried out in order to minimize damage to both the tick's hosts and the environment, the latter due to the misuse of acaricide products. In this regard, carvacrol has been used as a natural alternative against ticks as it displays several properties including acaricidal. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the ultramorphology and morphohistochemistry of the integument of semi-engorged R. sanguineus s.l. females exposed to different carvacrol concentrations

Ultrasonography for Skin and Soft Tissue Infections, Noninfectious Cysts, Foreign Bodies, and Burns in the Critical Care Setting.

There are multiple opportunities for the use of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of skin and soft tissue differentials. Ultrasonography is inexpensive, easily reproducible, and able to provide real-time data in situations where condition changes and progression are common. Not only does bedside ultrasonography provide the clinician an in-depth look beyond epidermal structures into body cavities, it remains a safe, nonionizing radiating, effective, cost-efficient, reliable, and accessible tool for the emergency management of life- and limb-threatening integumentary infections. Fasciola gigantica: Comparison of the tegumental ultrastructure in newly excysted metacercariae and in vitro penetrated juvenile flukes indicates intracellular sources of molecules with vaccinal and immunomodulatory potential.

Using in vitro procedures to prepare newly excysted metacercariae and gut-penetrated juvenile Fasciola gigantica, the ultrastructural features of the tegumental syncytium and perikarya of these ephemeral stages in the host-invasion process were compared. The T0-type tegumental cells in newly excysted metacercariae are packed with stored T0 granules which, following transport to the surface membrane of the syncytium, discharge by exocytosis to maintain the glycocalyx. The T0 cells become depleted of T0 granules during the penetration process, shrink in size, and initiate autophagy in the cytopl

Predominant Non-Traditional or "Exotic" Pet Species and Affected Body Systems and Sense Organs at a Veterinary Referral Center: An Eleven-Year Retrospective Study.

This study characterized the non-traditional or "exotic" pets most frequently admitted to a referral center (Center for Medicine and Research in Wild Animals-CEMPAS) located in Botucatu, São Paulo state, Brazil, and identified the main reasons for admission according to affected body systems or sense organs. A retrospective review of medical records was performed over 11 years, and data were grouped into four vertebrate classes: reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and birds. From 2014 to 2019, bird admissions exceeded mammals (p = 0.0001), whereas no significant difference was observed from 2020 to

Oxidative Stress Status and Its Relationship to Skin Aging.

Skin and cellular aging are impacted by various toxins in our environment such as air pollution, water contamination, an increased prevalence of light-emitting diodes, electromagnetic frequencies, various yeast and other fungi, parasitic infections, and mold and heavy metal toxicity. Basic topical skin care is insufficient to adequately protect an individual's integumentary system and other organs from these types of daily cellular stressors. These stressors impact the level of oxidative stressstatus (OSS). OSS is measurable through biomarker analysis of various body fluids including blood, sa

Comparative integumentary fascial anatomy in mice, rats, and humans: homologies and implications for translational wound healing research.

In mice, native fascia and surrounding tissues have been shown to mobilize into wounds during healing, particularly during the proliferative phase. However, comparative descriptions of integumentary fascial anatomy across commonly used research species remain limited. This study aimed to characterize and compare the fascial layers of the integumentary system in mice, rats, and humans, identify structural homologies across species, and discuss the implications of these findings for wound healing research. Histological analysis of skin specimens from mice, rats, and humans was performed using mi

Topical cannabis-based medicines - A novel paradigm and treatment for non-uremic calciphylaxis leg ulcers: An open label trial.

Non-Uremic Calciphylaxis (NUC) is a rare condition that often manifests as intractable and painful integumentary wounds, afflicting patients with a high burden of co-morbidity. The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a ubiquitous signalling system that is theorised to be dysregulated within wound beds and associated peri-wound tissues. Preclinical research has shown that the dominant chemical classes derived from the cannabis plant, cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, interact with the integumentary ECS to promote wound closure and analgesia. This is a prospective open label cohort study invol
