Intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) or intellectual developmental disability (IDD) is one of the commonest neurodevelopmental disabilities worldwide and is known to affect 2% of the population of France or just over a million people. It is marked by a reduced ability to reason and understand abstract or complex information, which heavily restricts school learning and limits the individual's ability to adapt to daily life, including their transition to adulthood. Intellectual handicap or mental handicap results from an interaction between the individual vulnerability of a person with ID and their ecos

Inv21p12q22del21q22 and intellectual disability.

Chromosomal rearrangements are common in humans. Pericentric inversions are among the most frequent aberrations (1-2%). Most inversions are balanced and do not cause problems in carriers unless one of the breakpoints disrupts important functional genes, has near submicroscopic copy number variants or hosts "cryptic" complex chromosomal rearrangements. Pericentric inversions can lead to imbalance in offspring. Less than 3% of Down syndrome patients have duplication as a result of parental pericentric inversion of chromosome 21. We report a family with an apparently balanced pericentric inversio

Intellectual disability and homelessness.

BACKGROUND: The association between poverty and intellectual disability (ID) has been well documented. However, little is known about persons with ID who face circumstances of extreme poverty, such as homelessness. This paper describes the situation of persons with ID who were or are homeless in Montreal and are currently receiving services from a team dedicated to homeless persons. AIMS: (1) To describe the characteristics, history and current situation of these persons; and (2) to report within-group differences as a function of gender and current residential status. METHODS: The data were

Obesity and intellectual disability.

While much of the industrialized world struggles for clues to the growing rise in obesity in their respective countries, researchers and service providers involved in understanding the health characteristics and health behaviors of persons with intellectual disability (ID) struggle with their own issues regarding the increased prevalence of obesity in this segment of the population. What is particularly alarming is that adults with ID residing in the United States in smaller, less supervised settings (e.g., group homes and family households) have a significantly higher rate of obesity compared

Mania and intellectual disability: the course of manic symptoms in persons with intellectual disability.

Our aim was to extend the literature by examining the presence of manic symptoms in persons with intellectual deficits with and without bipolar disorder for 3 years. Three groups (bipolar, psychopathology other than bipolar disorder, and no Axis I diagnosis) were formed with 14 participants in each group. Initially, the presence of mania symptoms were examined across diagnostic groups. The bipolar group had significantly greater endorsements on the Parent Version of the Young Mania Rating Scale and the DASH-II Mania subscale item "decreased need for sleep" than did the other groups. A 3 (group

Epigenetic Etiology of Intellectual Disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a prevailing neurodevelopmental condition associated with impaired cognitive and adaptive behaviors. Many chromatin-modifying enzymes and other epigenetic regulators have been genetically associated with ID disorders (IDDs). Here we review how alterations in the function of histone modifiers, chromatin remodelers, and methyl-DNA binding proteins contribute to neurodevelopmental defects and altered brain plasticity. We also discuss how progress in human genetics has led to the generation of mouse models that unveil the molecular etiology of ID, and outline the di

Older adults with intellectual disability.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Improvements in health and social care for people with intellectual disability have led to a dramatic increase in the life expectancy of this population, resulting in a large and growing number of older adults with intellectual disability. They are at risk of age-related mental disorders such as dementia and continue to present with high rates of mental illness. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research with older adults with intellectual disability has included physical health issues that may affect mental well being, and biological and clinical features of dementia in people with

Assessment of Specific Learning Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities.

We review literature related to the assessment and identification of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Intellectual Disabilities (ID). SLD and ID are the only two disorders requiring psychometric test performance for identification within the group of neurodevelopmental disorders in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - 5. SLD and ID are considered exclusionary of one another, but the processes for assessment and identification of each disorder vary. There is controversy about the identification and assessment methods for SLD, with little consensus. Unlike ID, SLD is weakly related to ful

Efficacy and tolerability of Brivaracetam in people with intellectual disability compared to those without intellectual disability.

INTRODUCTION: In England, nearly a quarter of people with intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy. Though 70 % of PwID have pharmaco-resistant seizures only 10 % are prescribed anti-seizure medication (ASMs) licenced for pharmaco-resistance. Brivaracetam (BRV) licenced in 2016 has had nine post-marketing studies involving PwID. These studies are limited either by lack of controls or not looking at outcomes based on differing levels of ID severity. This study looks at evidence comparing effectiveness and side-effects in PwID to those without ID prescribed Brivaracetam (BRV). METHODS: Pool

Genetic testing in intellectual disability psychiatry: Opinions and practices of UK child and intellectual disability psychiatrists.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of genetic causes of intellectual disabilities (ID) are identifiable by clinical genetic testing, offering the prospect of bespoke patient management. However, little is known about the practices of psychiatrists and their views on genetic testing. METHOD: We undertook an online survey of 215 psychiatrists, who were contacted via the Royal College of Psychiatrist's Child and Adolescent and Intellectual Disability Psychiatry mailing lists. RESULTS: In comparison with child and adolescent psychiatrists, intellectual disability psychiatrists ordered more genetic

Social support and intellectual disabilities: a comparison between social networks of adults with intellectual disability and those with physical disability.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been identified as a major protective factor in preventing mental health problems and also as a major contributor to quality of life. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have been identified as having limited social support structures. Interventions have been focused on promoting their social presence and integration. However, previous studies have shown that this does not always lead to the formation of social relationships. To date few studies have looked at how having an ID leads to impoverished social networks. This study aimed to do this by contrastin

UBE2A-related X-linked intellectual disability.

UBE2A-related X-linked intellectual disability is characterized by a distinctive facial phenotype (dense eyebrows and eyelashes, synophrys, hypertelorism, upslanted palpebral fissures, wide mouth, and thin lips), generalized hirsutism, hypoplastic genitalia, short stature, hypotonia, seizures, and severe intellectual disability. Five affected males in two families are described here and compared with the previously reported 17 males in eight families. The new cases are notable for the absence of nail dystrophy, previously considered a defining manifestation, and for the presence of hypogammagl

HERC1 mutations in idiopathic intellectual disability.

HERC1 is a member of HERC protein family of ubiquitin ligases and is a negative regulator of the mTOR pathway. It is also a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for ARF and Rab family GTPases. Biallelic mutations in HERC1 were recently shown to cause a human phenotype with overgrowth and intellectual disability as main features. Herein we describe clinical features in another patient with homozygous novel mutation in HERC1. Moderate to severe intellectual disability, hypotonia, macrocephaly, tall stature, and facial features appear as main clinical features of the condition. Kyphoscoliosis and s

Preventing Sexual Assault in Intellectual Disability.

Prevention of sexual assault in intellectual disability (ID) begins with defining the problem. There are identified risk factors and barriers faced by adults with ID who experience sexual assault. Research shows that individuals with ID are victimized by sexual assault at rates substantially higher than the general population. The perpetrators are usually trusted individuals in their environment, such as peers, caregivers, or family members. Effective prevention efforts require identifying risk factors and employing public health strategies. Finally, widespread adoption of evidence-based educa

A Rare Cause of Intellectual Disability.

A seven-year-old female was followed in a developmental clinic from the age of nine months due to delayed psychomotor development. The first physical examination showed a newborn with irritability and a large anterior fontanelle. A transfontanellar ultrasound was performed, revealing mild enlargement of the lateral and third ventricles. Head circumference remained below the third percentile until the age of five months, then rose to the third percentile. Developmental milestones were globally delayed, with expressive language being more severely affected and axial hypotonia with appendicular h

Editorial: Developmental delay and intellectual disability.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder with a heterogeneous origin with a global incidence that continues to grow. Its causes and pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. It includes a combination of persistent symptoms such as difficulty in concentration, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Maternal methamphetamine (MA) abuse is a serious problem worldwide, it can lead to behavioral changes in their offspring that have similarities with behavioral changes seen in children with ADHD. There are several types of ADHD animal models, e.g. genetic mode
